The month of October, during the latter half of which the Japanese papers in Seoul predicted some great political storm, is gone, as the sun, as bright as ever, shines on the great treacherous oppressor and on the millions of oppressed. The Emperor is deep in some intrigues. The Japanese military authorities seem to be backing the Il-Chin-Hoi up to some scheme or other. But the Il-Chin-Hoi seems only permitted to bark without being given the power to bite.
4
In all likelihood the Japanese are using the Il-Chin-Hoi to scare the Emperor into all sorts of concessions. If so, may God smite the mean, trickyish and unreliable Japanese with something terrible and divine!

I have been trying but in vain, to teach(吾誌) my brother a Korean history instead of the usual Chinese history or 通鑑. The teacher does not like the change, while my father positively prefers to have him (the boys) taught the Chinese history. He says: "Let them be grounded in Chinese history, then read Korean history as a pastime 야기책. In public documents reference to events in Chinese history is understood by all; but who knows anything about what any of Korea's Kings has done?" For similar reasons he prefers in Chinese, 1,000 characters classic to a collection of useful and easy characters I have made for my boys. A Korean minister spurning whatever is Korean with contempt? No wonder Korea is such a willing slave to anyone that comes along in the shape of a stronger nation.

Last night the Crown Princess died―or rather was compelled to die by the absurd custom of Korea which keeps doctors from a female patient. For a doctor to prognosticate correctly the condition and needs of a sick person by lightly touching the pulse at the wrist is more than medical science can boast. In case of a princess, nothing can be seen―even the hand is wrapped in silk―but a tiny space at the wrist. I have no doubts that a Foreign doctor would have saved her.
9
The Princess has known no pleasure or happiness, conjugal or domestic. Who knows but that she died to be saved from national calamities which her father-in-law has done and is doing his best to bring upon his house and country?
10
Mr. Kim, one of the doctors who had been called in to see (?) the Princess, told me that there were 60-odd doctors to attend the case. None of them ever saw the patient. When a doctor made out a prescription, it was submitted to the criticism of the whole crowd. By the time they got through with the prescription, nothing was left of it but what was useless or harmless. Thus even a competent doctor had no chance to show his ability.
11
When a royal personage gets sick in the palace, nothing saves him or her but providence or chance or fate.
