8 p.m. Dr. Avison gave a fine talk on the present condition―war activities as represented by Red Cross and the Red Triangle agencies of mercy. He said that the President has forbidden any saloon or an ill famed woman to reside within 10 miles of the training camp. Contrast this with the Japanese theory and practice of establishing 遷廊 or prostitution quarters wherever a camp or a town is to be built.

The Bishop said "Well, I came here to like it! I have certain work to be done. I hope I shall not dislike it." What sympathy-less expression of a sympathy-less Bishop! I honor him, however, for his honest statement. No false profession of love and to.

99
Y.M.C.A.Mary Abbe a little better.―Wife is getting the influenza―mostly due to her abominable obstinacy in heeding advice for taking precautions. She is so insolent and so indolent! Her ideals of happiness is to do nothing but to eat and eat and put on fine dress night and day and to lounge having everybody to minister unto her and not to do anything for anybody whosoever: She doesn't read a single line of anything the whole year around. Absolute selfishness―not a spark of noble sentiment or generous thought!
