Americans jubilant―the Armistice signed between Germany and the Allies. Practically unconditional surrender on the part of Germany. Kaiser reported to have fled to Holland. Prince Henry shot at by his own sailors―but escaped―I hope. In 1899 Prince Henry visited 元山 on his flagship, Mr. Oisen then the Commissioner of Customs gave him a dinner to which all the foreigners and I were invited. After I had left the room the Prince on talking about his visit to Seoul and the Korean Emperor, said "Inside 10 years, the Korean Emperor will be a pensioner of Japan". Had some one suggested that in 20 years the Kaiser would flee for his life after having ruined his country, the Prince would have jumped out of his boots. Again when the Kaiser was in power when he frowned little Holland shook. Now it is the Kaiser who is seeking the protection of the little Holland. Such is the vicissitudes of human life. Hence Pride is the greatest enemy of an individual and of a nation.

Walking―reading. Uncle has had some strange psychical experiences.
88
1. Two years ago he suffered dreadfully from the attack of rheumatism. He could not move his body one way or another without great pain. He couldn't lift his head from the pillow. All sorts of medicine no avail. One night in a kind of trance he saw distinctly a man in foreign dress standing before him. The phantom said to him, "Get the 상수리 and 수수 and boil them in 술. Then drink it. You will get well" Uncle, as soon as the day dawned told servants to bring him a bawl of the mixture as was told him by the phantom. No sooner he drank the stuff than he felt as if a great weight moved down his back and he felt as light as before. His rheumatism left him!
89
2. One night he got up in sleep, left the room and walked out alone and went up the back hill toward the 옷―All of a sudden some one stopped him on the road and said "Where are you going?" Uncle opened his eyes and with efforts stooped down by the side of the well and washed his face. That brought him to his senses. When he returned home, he found all the gates and doors left open and nobody was awaken in the house.
90
3. Uncle, from childhood, was noted for agility and courage. He never betrayed fear in the presence of dangers. But of late years he has become so fearful that he dares not stay alone or go out anywhere.

92
28th. Thursday. Beautiful.

93
新村 home.
94
Tried to read a book of Nietzsche "Twilight of Idols." Disgusted with his trans-valuation of all values, his deification of selfishness and natural passions, his peevish and bitter hatred against everything Christian. No wonder Germany has become what she has proved herself to be, a nation of brutality and of bursting pride when such doctrines of selfishness and pitilessness as are advocated by Nietzsche became so popular.
95
The hunger and thirst after popularity―after being or saying something that nobody has ever been or said before drive the German philosopher to make themselves beasts by trying to upset everything that has the sanctity of ages. It says "The best are lacking where selfishness begins to be lacking."
96
Again "All is up with man when he becomes altruistic." The present condition of Germany―the Kaiser fled―the people starving―the country torn to pieces―foreign legions occupying her ancient fortresses―her navy gone―the whole nation begging bread from the enemies―all this is the fruit of the arrogant, selfish, ruthless policy of the brutalized people―the best answer to Nietzsche.
