9:30 a.m. went to Severance Hospital to attend the meeting of Bd. of Managers of the Medical College. Took luncheon at Dr. Hirst's. Met Mr. Bruen―I remember him with lasting gratitude for his visits when I was in Taiku prison.

8 p.m. the Patriotic League had some war pictures shown. Mary when she saw and was told the fearful sufferings which soldiers and horses have been going through―as pictured on the canvas―she said: "사옴은 웨 해오. 좀 더 어드면 무엇하나오?" “Why do they fight? What good is it if they get a little more land?"

3 p.m. a reception at Closen Hotel given by the Congregationalists of Seoul to Dr. Berry and his traveling companions. Dr. Berry had spent 20 years in Japan in the early years of Meiji and rendered much valuable service in building hospitals in starting nurse training and in prison reform. He has worked ever since―all through the past 45 years or more in the interest of Japan and the Japanese in America. He has been decorated.

Dr. Berry and Rev. P spoke in Y.M.C.A. to a large and curious crowd on the principles and policy of the Congregational Church.

4 p.m. Y.M.C.A. Gospel meeting. Mr. 金昶濟 gave a good talk. He is very popular among students. His interpretation of the Gospel on very rational grounds. He deplored the lack of domestic happiness.―Korea owing chiefly to early marriages.

"We have no love at home, no warm sympathetic social attractions, no love to be expected from 國家 or state, we are indeed wretched". No wonder the police has their eye on him.

月例會 at 8 a.m. Dr. 閔弘植 who is said to have been employed by the Russian Government as an army doctor, and who is said to have seen the war as far as Riga, was asked to give a talk on Russia. When he got up he spoke about how fond the Russians are of tea and vodka and a few other things which were neither instructive nor interesting. He couldn't trust himself lest he must say something that might offend the ever sensitive ears of the wakeful detectives.

男女敎役者 懇親會―The first of its kind. The mixed social meeting. On the whole the meeting was a success. Cynn H.W. showed an ugly spirit in needless criticism of those who called the meeting and then asked the ladies to organize or start a permanent organ for such gatherings among themselves. He is ambitious, diplomatic and hard to please.

梁柱三 came to Y.M.C.A. to take refreshment. He came this morning to get S.I. literature. He told me: (1) He tried to get Mr. Wasson to cultivate the friendly relations with the Japanese in Song Do―but all in vain; (2) that Mrs. W. so unsocial to the Koreans that she hasn't even for once invited him to a meal; (3) that the detectives seem to pay him more and more attention; (4) that a Japanese gendarme asked him two weeks ago if I had gone to 梁's house to hide myself; (5) that he, 梁, feels so uneasy that he wants to come back to Seoul. Decided not to go to Song Do today.
