尹基元 one of the best workers in the Industrial Dept. sent in his resignation. Yi In Yung tells me one of the reasons for this decision on the part of Yun is that Mr. Gregg has been promising him now a raise in sal. then a share in the profit, yet putting it off from week to week―Another reason is that he (Yun) is not given free hand in his department―too much interference and rude treatment. By the way the arrogance and thoughtlessness of missionaries are alienating the Koreans in schools and churches where foreigners rule―There will be a great revolt some day in near future on the part of the Koreans unless the missionaries change their attitude. What a pity!
14
4th. Thursday. Beautiful. Hot.
16
Yesterday at the request of mother I bought two mosquito nets for my daughter-in-law, Allen's wife and another for □□.
17
Thanks to the foolishness of 興瑞 the nets happened to be 生絹 or silk. Wife got stomach ache and headache through jealousy.
18
This morning she broke out in her usual abominable saying that I didn't get her one. When I told her she had a net better than the ones I bought, she said that no matter how many nets she had, I ought to give her a silk one too when I gave them in sly to my daughter-in-law. By the way she hates Allen's wife with unspeakable hatred. This woman whom I have the misfortune of calling wife is so mean and selfish that I don't know what to do. She may be beaten into submission, which I can't bear doing so that will cause my precious little children to suffer and can't divorce her―which I wish I could. She would not quit me as she knows well enough. Nobody will bear with her wickedness as I do.

Contentment is the essence of happiness, because without contentment one can't be satisfied with anything. But no selfish soul can be satisfied; hence no selfish soul can be happy. My wife is making herself miserable by her insatiable selfishness. She wants everybody and everything to serve and please her. She doesn't care a rap to please anybody. What little sense she has is perverted by her selfishness.

Of the 9 all dropped out leaving my cousin 李升鉉 and me only. These two I find to be no account only persons who want to make shows at the expense of others that I am to have trusted them. However Mr. 阿部 seemed to enjoy it.

Went to see aunt. 李通津 had gone to Seoul to get a new house. I was touched with sadness when I saw everything was upside down―as the result of change of owners of the house. 李通津 made money and had great influence in Song Do some years ago. But his passion for more money plunged him speculation in mining etc. which his overbearing manner offended the natives of Song Do. The anbang where I saw first 義州집 in 1897 when 李通律 was beginning to get influence in Song Do deserted. So sad!
