Socialism―worse still―Bolshevism is spreading among the Korean youth like a wild fire. Cause (1) Socialism is rapidly progress among the student class in Japan---as a fad. the Korean students 99% of whom take to the studies, or rather dabbling, in sociology, philosophy and politics, find in socialism a congenial field for the exercise of their idle tongues. (2) Parasitism―living upon the earnings of others―has been curse of Korea. So, communism or feeding on each other has a charm for the average Korean almost irresistible because he hopes to be fed and clothed without hard work. (3) The Korean looks toward Bolshevism as his promised land. Why? Because Bolshevism will gratify his passions of envy of covetousness, of parasitism by whole sale confiscation of the lands and home of the so called rich people. (4) The greatest cause, however, for the pro-Bolshevism of the Korean is the alarming increase of the number of the destitute owing to the grabbing policy of the Japanese. The Japanese policy in Korea seems to be aimed at two things and two things only, so far as the Korean is concerned viz: To make him sell out as quick as possible and to reduce him to mere serfdom. (5) Many of Korean seemed to favor Bolshevism just because he thinks its triumph might over throw the Japanese domination or damnation. God alone can save us!

Propaganda is the fashion of the day. The Japanese rulers of Korea spend or have spent quite large sums of money in what they euphemiously call campaigns of education viz: in telling the Koreans what the Government General is doing or has been doing for their happiness and prosperity. Of course not one in a thousand believes what the professional propagandist says. If Japan really means what she says, let her get up a series of educational campaign telling the Koreans (1) not to part with their fields and mountains―the only source of income left to the Korean; (2) not to ruin themselves by speculating in the 米豆取引 and the stock gambling. (3) Vigorous and repeated propaganda work by moving pictures and moving speeches should be carried on to show the Koreans the dire consequences of giving up their lands and of emigrating to the inhospitable regions of Manchuria and Siberia. (4) The Koreans should be told where and how to lay their complaints whatever they are thoughtlessly and unnecessarily annoyed, vexed and insulted by the hundreds of thousand little autocrats now scattered all over Korea in the shape of clerks, policemen and merchants and farmers who look upon the Koreans as "Yuboes" to be despised to be exploited and to be peonies by the Almight Naichijin. Let Japan do this, then, and not till then, will or can believe in her promises.

Left Seoul 10:15 a.m. per what should have been 9:50 a.m. train for Song Do, owing to the delay of the Fusan express. Arriving at Song Do about 12:30 went straight to Mr. Wassons's for lunch. The Board of Control of the Song Higher Common School held its meeting after the noon meal. The problem of finding means and ways for the equipment of the new building of the Higher School and of the North and South Common School was up for discussion. Decided to make an appeal to the Korean public of Song Do for the money about 8 or 10 thousand yen.

After supper at home went to the school to have a talk with the faculty about the feasibility of making an appeal to the Song Do public for the equipment. Agreed to make the attempt.

5 p.m. went to 食道園 where Marquis Pak Young Hyo and few other friends gave a supper in honor of Mr. □□倫 who is in the city. besides Prince Pak, the guests were Count Song Pyong Joon, Messrs. 李軫鎬, 鄭鎭弘, 李□□, 兪星濬, 申應熙 and myself. The supper was neatly prepared and nicely served. After the supper "Kisaings" sang and danced. Was disgusted with the obscene and filthy talks in which Prince P. and others indulged. So many decent and instructive topics to talk about―then why this obscenity! Yet these men belong to the cream of the Korean society.

Someone proposed and all approved a plan of organizing a Friendship Club. 念舊會, the membership of which is to be composed of those who spent some years in Tokyo as political refuges of some kind. Count 宋, Messrs. 李軫鎬 and 鄭 were appointed to draft a constitution.

As the membership of the 念舊會 proposed last night is to be composed of the political refugees in Japan between the years of 1882 壬午 and 1905 甲辰, the Club will be a large one. Anyhow who is the father of the scheme and for what purpose? I suspect Mr. Song Pyong Joon to be back of the plan, as Messrs. Yi Jin Ho and Jung Jin Hong are his lieutenants. As these refugees are men of all sorts and shades of opinions, Song, one of the brainiest men in the Korean peerage, wants to cultivate their friendship.

Worshipped at 宗橋 Church. Mr. 兪星濬 talked on Christian Civilization. "We believe the Christian truths in our hearts. We pray and praise with out lips. All very good. Now we must work with our hands to realize the in deals of christian civilized."

I am told that the Christian Publication Co. or 廣文社 which Messrs. 朴勝鳳, 兪星濬 etc. have been trying to organize is still a dream to be materialized. One of the main difficulties is that the Pyong Yang people show no sympathy for the plan because its promoters are Seoul or Southern men. I know this would happen as soon as the movement was set on foot. We are not ready for such an enterprise yet.

The police is soliciting contributions from the Koreans toward a fund for the relief of the families of deceased police officials. A unclassified or non-lawful tax has been levied from the people to buy stoves and coal for the police boxes throughout the city. These are as illegal as they are dangerous. Tai Won Koon built the Kyong Bok Palace with the so called Voluntary Contribution(願納) . The Japanese authorities are copying most of the despotic methods and measures of the corrupt Yi Dynasty when such methods and measures help them at the expense of the Koreans, of course.

According to papers an Anglo-Irish Agreement has lately been arrived at by which Ireland is to be a free state, an independent member of the Imperial British Family of Free Nations. Thus where Irish Wrong ends, the British Happiness begins or vice-versa. What puzzled me most is that such a nation of practical commonsense statemanship like England should have prolonged her unjust policy in Ireland so long and that she should have given to the Irish people in 1921 when she might, or ought to, have given them at least 50 years ago. Well all that can be said is that it's never too late to do good.

6 p.m. went to 明月館 to a Korean entertainment given in honor of Messrs. 方世立 and 項康珍 two Chinese Gentlemen from Kirin. Mr. 鄭安立 a Korean settler, came with them to present to the Korean public the prospects of a Rice-field Association or Stock Co.(大豊水田公司) , Of the capital ￥5,000,000.00 the chinese land owners are to offer the land to the value of 2 1/2 million yen while the Koreans are asked to invest the balance or 2 1/2 million yen in cash. The advantages to the Koreans are the salvations of three millions or more of the Korean emigrants by giving their fields to cultivate and the high per centage of not gain on the money invested. Mr. 鄭 made an impassioned appeal. The supper lasted from 6 to 11:30 or rather we had to wait from 6 to 9:30 before the meal was served. The songs and dances of kisaings. The miserable cold room where the supper was served―the whole affair was a wretched failure.

Mr. F.B. Smith spoke to a crowded audience at the Central Y. on peace. All he said about the evils of war―the destruction of the youths of nations, the diseases and patiences which a great war brings in its wakes the retardation of the civilizing influences of mankind. Who can deny all that? But what will you do with the fact that Japan got series of successful war, that Ireland is on the point of getting a fair treatment only after years of distressing warfare? Of course the late great war was as senseless an affair as human. Human pride and human vanity could have devised. Yet as long as one nation of one race deals unfairly and unjustly with another yielding to nothing but force, so long will war remain a necessary evil. Then to abolish war it is not enough to denounce it only, something must be invented or discovered. That will either force or persuade stronger nations or races to be fair and just to weaker ones without appealing to a war.

3 p.m. called on Mrs. Hardie with 文姬, 恩姬 and 明姬 at her new home back of the old 天然亭. The old 天然亭 where Hanabusa, the first Japanese minister to the Court of Korea resided 39 years ago and from where he and his suite were driven out by a mob armed with swords and spears has only a small pavilion still standing a lonely relic of by-gone days. On the hill above the site of 天然亭 stands the Methodist Theological Seminary and the Missionary Homes. When Hanabusa lived in the Old Korean house, no Japanese―to say nothing about a foreigner―was allowed to enter the city gates without permission from the Korean Government. Now the missionary home has electric light and water works while no Korean is allowed to enter the Kyong Bok Palace without the permission of the Japanese. What a glorious change for the Japanese but what a shameful change for the Korean!
