Bishop Boaz brought out 14 objectives toward which all efforts should be directed. All necessary and good; but the most important and far reaching ones were "closer co-operation with the Northern M.E. Church in Korea" and the raising of 20,000 in five years a Korea's quota to the Superannuates Fund of10,000,000 which the M.E. Church So. is going to drive for from the 1st Feb. to March 16th 1924. Mr. 尹錫圭, told me the other day that in Kang Won Do, many of the Public Primary Schools 公立普通學校, have several sinecure positions which are given to army officers who have nothing to do with the schools. Thus the taxes which the Japanese squeeze from the sweat and blood of the Korean people for the ostensible object of spreading education among the Koreans are liberally used or misused to pay the"sake" and "gesha" bills of the friends of the ruling Japanese. Can this be true? The Japanese are so mean and irresponsible in Korea that nothing may be too mean for them. The personal honesty or honorableness of a few men like Baron Saito or Count Terauchi acts only as a smoke screen for the diabolical national policy which Japan has adopted for the exploitation and expropriation of the defenceless and hopeless Koreans.

Three things he singled out as having come during the year apparently to stay. 1. Higher Criticism. 2. The Spirit of Independence. 3. The Emphasis on Self Support. There is a tone of irreverence in his talks―but I am afraid that the prevailing attitude of the young men toward religion now-a-days.

An extra tells me that someone fired a pistol at the Crown Prince, the Regent on his way to the Diet in an auto. What a jump from the time, not very far away either―when nobody was allowed to look down from a window on the Emperor when he passed a street, to the time when a Japanese would so far forget or ignore the divinity of the Mikado as to fire―yes, actually fire―at him. The world is changing indeed!
