Song Do home. This has been one of the most disastrous summers the Korean farmers have had in their history. Devastating flood and no less devastating drought. Famine is an accomplished fact this year. All classes of the Korean people are full of fears and of anxiety. Yet Mr. S. buoyantly tells me: "This is the best summer we have had at the Wonsan Beach. No rain, cool breezes and big crowd." Well it is ill wind that blows nobody good. However, this naive and perfectly innocent remark of Mr. S. is only one of the innumerable illustrations that go to show the utter separate ness―not necessarily oppositeness―between the interests of the Koreans and of the foreigner. The Summer that has filled Korea with sorrow and hunger has been a season of joy to the foreigner! Certainly it takes a little more than ordinary measure of Divine grace for a foreign missionary to understand and sympathize with, the sufferings of the Korean people.

2
Song Do home. This weather cool at the both ends of the day while intensely hot during the day, would have been ideal for ripening crops, had there been showers at reasonable intervals. But this kind of weather without a drop of rain for three long weeks is drying up everything.

19. 8월 19일

2
Song Do home. This drought and heat with east wind continuing day and night for several days have dried up everything to the cracking point,

Had a call from Mr. Hobbs of the British and Foreign Bible Society, this noon. He informed me that Dr. Gale had no right to give away the revised manuscript of the O.T. as he and his Korean writers had been paid by the Bible Society for the revision; and that Dr. Gale had been given a manuscript in 諺文 as it stood when the copy was given him and not in any other form. Mr. Hobbs further volunteered the information that no publisher would get any profit by publishing the O.T.

20. 8월 20일

1
20th. Wednesday. Sun. Very hot.

2
Song Do home. Mr. 池雲英, the artist came from Seoul on a begging trip. His fame as a painter (old style) and as a calligrapher is sufficient to earn for him a competent living if he would apply himself to work. But he seems rather more inclined to live on alms rather than on work. Beside he is half crazy. He says he is the incarnation of 西門大師 who lived 300 years ago. He believes that two female devils 앵마구리 and 망마구리 dwell in his bowels and the only means to drive them out is the young wife. All this would be intolerable nonsense in anybody but him who is no doubt the most skillful artist in old style painting now living. He is 73 years old I have known for over forty years. I like to help him as an artist and an old friend.

This dreadful drought is driving everybody to despair. They say we are going to have as great a famine this year as we had in 丙子年 47 years ago.

Arrived at Kal-Ma Station 6:30 a.m. Went to the Beach, straight. Breakfast at Mr. Snyder's cottage. Found I put my report in my suit case which I had sent to 釋王寺 by 明燮! There being no possible means of getting the report for the morning session I had to write it out from memory. The report well received by the Conference. Left the Beach at 2. Visited Mr. and Mrs. Fenwick―very glad to see these old friends. At 2:40 p.m. boarded a wrong train―for 咸興 instead for Seoul! Met 金鳳姬 who used to be 書記 at the 監理署 and who after 21 years recognized me. Stopped off at 德原 Station and at the urgent invitation of Kim spent nearly 6 and half hours at his home. A good supper. Met 姜, 崔, 金, all connected with the Confucian Temple. They were very cordial. Arrived at 釋王寺松風閣 about 1 a.m.

Left Seoul 12:10 p.m. train for Song Do. On arriving at the Song Do Station I met my precious 文姬 and 恩姬 with 後房 and Kim Melissa ready to start for Seoul. I just miss my darling 恩姬 who is so delicate, so sensitive and so beautiful. I wish I didn't have to be away from her so much. God bless my 文姬 and 恩姬 in their school-work.
