Seoul home. Today is the Divine Tasting Festival day in the Japanese calendar. The processions with carts drawn by bulls or borne on the shoulders of men, with lanterns, banners, with masked men and dancers―all so grotesque;

frivolous childish and undignified. Not a touch of sacredness or of anything that inspires a sense of religious reverence of awe. The most ridiculous part of the whole affair is the sight of the Japanese notables who walk in the procession in frock coats and silk hats.

From 7:30 to 10:30 went to hear Middle School Oratorical Contest at the 天道敎堂. Fifteen boys spoke. Fourteen of them; no matter what subject they had, all alike abused the 有産階級 or the propertied class in Bolshevistic phrases. Got thoroughly tired of the whole bunch.
