59
Left Song Do 9:53 a.m. for 南川驛. Thence 3 hours' ride on auto to 支下里. Dull p.m. Arrived at my destination about 4 p.m. Surprised to find such a large village among the mountains. Put up at the hospitable home of Mr. 愼尙昊, the local doctor and a prominent member of the church. He was one of 130 or more of the so called conspirators of 1911-12.
60
Talked at the church―well crowded. I was too tired to give a good talk.
62
20th. Thursday. Rain. Cloudy.
63
Up at 6 a.m. Left 支下里(굄돌場) about 9 a.m. for 南川驛. Rain and mud―not very pleasant ride. A cute toothache. At the 南川 Station I gave a bright 50 sen piece to a poorly clad boy of about 14 and tole him to get a bottle of 全治水 for the aching tooth. Now the boy could easily have gone off with the money and be 50 sen richer, leaving me 50 sen wiser plus toothache. But the boy did come back quick with the medicine and the balance of the money. Repeated persuasion made him accept 10 sen for his errand. I fear further advance of "civilization" will drive this kind of native honesty out of fashion.
64
The train was very slow arriving at Seoul 6 p.m. Delighted to find all well at home.

Having received a telegram from Song Do last night to the effect that the 政務總監 is to visit our school today, I had to leave Seoul 8:05 a.m. train for Song Do.
76
We have today(or last night) the first big snow of the year. Actually over 8 inches in Song Do.
77
Mr. 下岡, the Administrative Chief visited our school about 3 p.m. He was accompanied by the Governor of 京畿 and 18 other under officials. No wonder every new Cabinet in Tokyo makes frantic efforts or promises to reduce the number of superfluous officials. I understand there are more than 3000 房托 alone who draw salaries for doing nothing.
78
Returned to Seoul 7:55 p.m. train.

85
Song Do Office. This morning Mr. 朴容九 from the 財務局 came to school to address the boys on the "Duty of Paying Taxes." No Korean will ever be persuaded by any lecture or sermon to pay gladly the ever skyward rising taxes which our Japanese benefactors are imposing on him. Besides the taxes are collected by drastic measures to the last drop of the blood any way. What's use of lecturing on it? The bureaucrats seem to have no idea of the sentiment of the Korean masses on the question of taxation. To talk to us about the duty of 國民 or of 文化向上, when the policy of expropriation and exploitation of the Korean race is being carried out without even a pretense of disguise.
