Seoul home. "How is your mother? I have not seen her for years. Please tell her to come and see me." So said a missionary lady. Now, did she ever think that she is younger than my mother by at least 30 years; that my mother hardly leaves home except on very rare occasions while she (the missionary) goes all over the city almost everyday; that my mother would have to climb a hill to call on the missionary lady while the latter needs walking or riding only a few minutes from the Bell Square to reach our home? Of course none of these considerations ever entered into thought of the missionary. This is simply "thoughtlessness." The fact is that there is a sort of silent conspiracy among the missionaries in Korea not to observe the simplest rules of social courtesies toward the Koreans. My mother once entertained a Bishop's wife to dinner at the Chosen Hotel; But no sort of acknowledgement was ever received. My wife once paid a visit to another Bishop's wife but not a sign of returning the civilities on the part of the American lady. In other words, while the American missionaries are most punctilious in the observance of social etiquettes among themselves; while they expect all kinds of politeness from the Koreans, they neglect the A. B. C. of social courtesies vis-a-vis the "natives." No wonder Christianity fails Christianize the heathen world.

Seoul home. The First Day of 甲子年! The year of 1923 of the N.S. and of 丙亥 of the Lunar Calendar with their earthquakes, floods, dangers of every kind have definitely gone. This grace that have led us safe thus far. And grace will lead us home! What ever rationalism or atheism may say, we can't live without God. We need God not so much for the great here-after as for the stormy present.

Does the human nature tend to be good as water tends to flow downward? That's what Confucianists maintain saying that we shall all be sages if we can resist the temptations of our casual desires. Yes, mice would live in security if one of them could tie a bell around the neck of the cat. Is the human nature hopelessly evil and we can be good by the grace of God? The latter theory is truer to fact anyway. Whole libraries have been written to support either theories. Yet, is the Confucian Chinaman any better than the European or is the European any more Christian than the Chinaman? In my disillusionments, I find it more conducive to the peace of mind to expect everybody to be mean and ungrateful than to believe in the natural goodness of mankind. For if I happen to meet with a good man, as I do now and then, I thank God as an agreeable surprise, while I don't feel disappointed when I see meanness and ingratitude everywhere and everyday.

I didn't hear much what he said, but his last remarks amused me very much. He said: "There are many gods in this world;
36
but for us the only god is―天方乘今土陛下 viz: the reigning Emperor. He is welcome to believe in the divinity of the Emperor, if he wants to, but he had no business to say that to a crowd composed of Christians and Koreans who can no more believe in the divinity of the Mikado than in the living Buddha fable of a mongolian lama.

Seoul home. Wife, instead of getting gentler, seems grow selfisher, heartlesser, thoughtlesser and lazier. Her tongue so biting and her temper so sulphurous that servants and all shun her as they would a viper. For the sake of our precious little children I have to keep my temper and tongue in check, but often I find it simply unbearable. The abominable meanness of human nature makes it incredible that man was created after the image of God.
