News that 金永祚 was on the 22nd(?) drowned in crossing the Hanaru ferry. He was the eldest son of my half sister. My half mother before her death provided a substantial means of livelihood for 永祚 in the shape of rice fields etc. He soon ran through with all of it and when I returned home in 1915 from Prison I heard he was living in somebody's 行廊 or servant room in □川 having been reduced to the last limit of destitution. I brought him and his family to 龍穴里 and gave him home and annual pension of 25 bags of rice a year. He, fortunately, did well. Now he is gone―I shall have to look after his wife and children.

許晟 told us in the Y. restaurant today that in 1912 when he had landed at San Francisco poor and friendless, the Koreans there didn't help him because they suspected him a spy; that 安昌浩 made such a discrimination between eight Pyong An Do men and 許晟 and 呂運弘 are 畿湖 men that he(許) had never said 安昌浩氏 or Mr. Ahn whenever he had to refer to him during his whole stay in America.

Mr. Snyder tells me that Mr. Deal has incurred a debt amounting to a hundred thousand yen; and that on the top of it all he(Mr. D.) has ordered 20 more looms etc. costing about ¥25,000.00 and that on credit too. Mr. M. has done all this borrowing without consulting or getting the authorization of the mission. If anything goes wrong the mission will be responsible for a debt of 125,000.00 yen of which it has had no knowledge. I am so sorry that Mr. Deal should have done such an un-business like thing. Returned to Seoul per 7:15 p.m. train. Found 琦善 no better.

An American writer says in a book; "The greatest triumph of the 19th century is not its marvellous progress in invention; its strides in education; its conquests of the dark religions of the world; the spread of a higher mental tone throughout the earth; the wondrous increase in material comfort and wealth, ―the greatest triumph of the century is not any nor all of these; it is the sweet atmosphere of peace that is covering the nations; it is the growing closer and closer of the peoples of the earth." Another instance of human shortsightedness! Under the "covering of the sweet atmosphere of peace," the great Christian nations of Europe taxed their brains and people to their utmost capacity to invent and manufacture the deadliest weapons of war, watching for the first opportunity for flying at each other's throat. This opportunity did come in 1914. We all know too well what the sweet atmosphere of peace did and is doing!

Lunch at Y. Restaurant. Mr. 許晠 had some very interesting experience while he was in America. He said most of the time he was there, he had no chance to go to church as he had to work Sundays in hotels or restaurants to earn money. According to him cheating, tipping or bribing, and squeezing were the rule and not exception in big hotels and restaurants among the waiters and clerks. While he worked as waiter during a Y.M.C.A. convention he saw boys in the dining rooms had their eyes on the biscuits or meat dishes while grace was said; then before "Amen" was said hands flew at the dishes grabbing the biscuits etc. Now 1. that is a sad commentary on the religious or moral status of the Y.M.C.A. boys. 許 went to America to study Y.M.C.A. work, and he had no chance to go to church not only but he had to practice cheating, squeezing and selling bad liquors and poor cigarettes for good prices―because he could not help it and because every body did so―that is too bad!

Seoul home. 琦善 still sick. Temperature between 379.
58
Wife is literally a bag of aches of every kind. Her affectation of some kind of ache everyday just to put on the air of aristocratic languidness while she enjoyed perfect health is having its natural effect. I have never known her rise in the morning without complaining some kind of ache somewhere in her naturally well conditioned body for the last ten years. From whom and where did she get the damnable notion that the summum bonum of a woman is absolutely to do nothing, but eating, sleeping, and scolding?

17. 3월 17일

60

Yesterday's Seoul Press reported that Bishop Welch had said in San Francisco: "The Koreans are settling down to work... While there are some malcontents, the great bulk of the people have abandoned the thought of Korean independence. Having settled that issue, they have returned to normal ways and are now prospering as they never did before, etc." If Bishop Welch really said this he was wrong in fooling with a subject he had far better let alone. Such a statement comes with bad grace from an American whose nation is leaving no stone unturned to exclude a few handful of the Japanese from a land 50 times bigger than Korea with a population incomparably richer and stronger than the Japanese. Suppose an alien race, say the Mexicans were to dispossess the Americans of every means of living from government. Positions to that of a common cooly―would the Bishop say "the Americans are prospering as they never did before?"
