Through the encouragement―morally and financially, especially the latter―the pro-Japanese elements among the Koreans are making unusual efforts for the realization of their ideals―viz: The Japanization of the Korean people. 國民會 and 洞民會 are two organizations now actively engaged in the job. They are making speeches distributing papers advocating 日鮮融和 etc. All no use. As long as the Japanese policy in Korea justifies our belief that it is Korea and not Koreans that Japan wants―so long it will be impossible to make the Koreans feel reconciled to the Japanese domination. These subsidized activities of the pro-Japanese elements will only make the anti-Japanese feeling grow stronger. Strange that the Japanese officials so smart should be blind to the fact that you can't make another fellow love you by dispossessing him of everything he has and by driving him to inevitable starvation. One Saito, however good he may be, can't cover a multitude of sins of the damnable selfishness of the Japanese policy in Korea.

Seoul home. 琦善 got his hair trimmed. He is enjoying feeing out in the beautiful sunshine. Thank God. If his mother and the old Amah who is supposed to look after his welfare will only take care not to overfeed him, he will improve steadily. But they are so obstinate in their ways that I can't feel easy everytime I leave home.

Seoul home. Mr. 金東成 tells me that the 時代日報 which was started a few months ago is so hard up for money that 崔南善, the president of the 社 is desperate to make ends meet. When 崔 asked me to lend him ￥30,000.00 to start the new paper, I was pretty sure that he would soon have no money to keep it going. Kim had heard that 崔 intended to call on me at Song Do to borrow some money: "Don't lend it to him" said him, "for it would be like pouring water into a bottomless vessel."

Sometime last winter a way station called □東 was created between Song Do and Jang Tan. Then I thought there must be some Japanese interest to be served in that district. The other day I casually learned that there is a Japanese farming settlement near the new station. Thus all the so-called improvements, whether it be extension of the train way or the reduction of the car-fare or the erection of a way station, or laying out new clean streets, or the improvement of water ways―in all improvements the essential question―the only question, the Japan authorities ask or consider is "Will it serve the Japanese interest?" If the Korean population is, benefitted by such improvements it is certainly not the fault of the Japanese policy. The Japanese propagandist point to the R. Rs, reforestation, irrigation work, harbor improvements, road improvements etc. as the great blessings which the Japanese regime is bestowing on the Korean. But if all these improvements were removed today it will hurt the Japanese 100 times more than the Koreans.

Seoul home. Mr. DeCamp once told me that the reason why the Koreans have high walls around their houses is that their paganism gives them no security of life and property. If his logic is a true one the Japanese are the most Christian people in the world because their houses have no arrangement for lock and key between the rooms―even in hotels. It is the Christian Europe and America that have given us the most highly developed lock and safes.

The Japanese Ambassador at Washington, in a note of protest against the exclusion of the Japanese sent to Secretary of State Hughs, said among other things: "Nor is it their (the Japanese Government) desire to send their nationals to the countries where they are not wanted." The Japanese diplomat apparently forgot to add the words "provided the countries are strong enough to pass exclusion bills." His warning that the passage of the exclusion bill would bring "grave consequences," was taken as an ultimatum by the American House of Representatives who replied by passing the bill 322 to 71.

Left Seoul with 琦善 7:15 a.m. for 牙山新村 to visit uncle. Arrived Sai-Mal about 10:30 a.m. At 3:30 left Sai-Mal to pay my respect to the graves of grandfather and of grandmother. The lack of good drinking water and of pebbly streams in this part of the country is a great draw back. Caterpillars 松虫 are devouring the pine trees, old and young to an extent that is really alarming. These hateful worms literally cover the trees and the ground under the trees. So many of them that no attempt is made to catch them.

Dentist in the morning. Left Seoul 12:05 p.m. train for Song Do. Find our new head teacher 兪秉敏 too short tempered. Besides he seems to have no sense of responsibility in matter of money. A week ago he took charge of the traveling expenses of the 5th year boys to the amount of ￥208.00 with which he went to Seoul and appropriated the money to his private use causing a deal of inconvenience to 金聖烈 who had to borrow the amount from Allen to pay for the traveling expenses of the 5th year class.

Here is an elder in a Presbyterian Church. He attends all the revival meetings―the early morning prayer meeting to boot―that go on in the city. He is religious in a way―very much so. But in business transactions he will not hesitate to over reach the other fellow. He wouldn't give a sen―to charitable or public benefit works―at least not often. Now what is his religion good for? Good for himself―no doubt. But then we don't have to preach the Gospel and build churches to propagate a religion―that is good for "selves"only.

郭允學(바위) left our home for good today. He came to us as a "rickshaw" cooly about 8 years ago, penniless and ignorant. He now goes home with near ￥300 beside the fact that he spent ￥200 or more two years ago in marrying. He has learned to write and read a simple letter in 諺文. His grievous faults are his incurable laziness, extravagance, and impudence. With these he will find his future quite thorny.

I know a richman who paid ￥600.00 for a root wild ginseng. He was so delighted with it that he took a picture of himself in frock-coat holding the root in his hand. This man who spends thousands of yen a year in so called tonics and delicacies for his precious mouth, turned a servant and his wife into the streets in the depth of winter―simply because they were becoming too populous. The poor man and his wife had faithfully served the heartless rich man for over ten years to my positive knowledge.

Song Do Office in the morning. The 4th year boys were told that their demand for the dismissal of 丸木 and 高松 couldn't be granted because, (1) they can't be easily replaced; (2) no assurance that new men would be anymore acceptable; (3) if teachers were to be dismissed everytime a class so demands, no teacher would feel at ease to do his work; (4) these two young men just out of their respective schools, have had no time to demonstrate fully their efficiency or inefficiency. We can't do what is impossible. If any student or students desire to find a better school they are free to do. Only let us part in good friendly spirit.

Yesterday we had 重役會 in the 彰文社 Office and decided:

(1) The cash deposit of the Company, say about ￥30,000.00 be deposited in banks at interest; (2) that the 新生命 magazine be continued in such a way as to be within the bounds of interest of the cash deposit; (3) that Messrs. 金錫泰 and 宋官鉉, be appointed a committee to collect the promissory notes(手形) . After much discussion Mr. 李商在 was elected President of the Company.

Song Do Office. The 3rd year boys sent in an ultimatum demanding (1) that 丸木 and 高松 be dismissed; (2) that the Chemical and Physic laboratories be enlarged and better equipped; (3) that the Biological class be provided with better equipment; (4) that the President be more regular in his attendance. At 3:30 p.m. I explained to the 3rd years why their major demands viz: the dismissal of 丸木 and 高松 could not be granted. Then the boys declared they wouldn't study until their demands be conceded to.

The 4th years sent a delegation of 20 to interview me. They were very rude and when I rose to get out one of them barred the passage! Later they came in a body and piled on the table notices of withdrawal.

On reaching my office heard that another delegation from the 4th years came to see Snyder asking what right the School had to suspend them who, having sent in their notices of withdrawal, are no longer students of the School. They were told that their notices were invalid because they were not countersigned by their guardians. The Second Year boys sent in an ultimatum asking that the demands of the 3rd and 4th Years be soon granted and that the answer to be made inside of tomorrow. We, the faculty had to decide to declare the Summer vacation tomorrow to save other classes from striking.

The Fifth Year boys have sent in an ultimatum demanding (l) that the petitions of the 3rd and 4th year boys be granted (dismissal of 丸木 and 高松) ; (2) that the Japanese language teacher 井上 be dismissed; (3) that the English teacher 木斗□ be replaced by another who could teach English in Japanese, and that answer to the above demands be given on next Monday!

Seoul home. The whole city ablaze with Japanese national colors. School children of all grades with flags processing the streets―all to celebrate the wedding of the Crown Prince of Japan, voluntary celebration on the part of the Japanese but compulsory so far as the Koreans are concerned.
