After breakfast went to the magistrate's office to be interviewed by the Committee of Investigation which the Governor-General had sent to look into the conflicting interests between my brother 致昌 and me as the owners of the hill on which our father's tomb is located and 李希宰 etc. the mining concessionaires. Went to 溫陽邑內 with the Committee to see the exact situation of the tomb and the opening which 李希宰 etc. had made within 6 間 from a building. Returned to the 溫泉 thoroughly tired.

溫泉. This morning Mr. 黑田, the 總督府屬, called and asked me my expectations and demands concerning the 溫陽 hill. I said my demands and hopes are:

1. The preservation of my brother's rights as the owner of the hill.

2. The preservation of the sacredness of my father's tomb and of its precincts―which means the entire hill.

3. The preservation of the entire hill from violation as our intention is to locate our family cemetery on the hill―the exact location to be decided by specialists.

Seoul home. The Old Calendar year of 甲子 is fast drawing to its close. This has been a year of fear and trembling to me. The critical illness of our precious Lambuth; the treachery of Kang Moon Soo costing me over ￥ 3,700.00; the rascalty of 梁在璣 and foolish extravagance of Hong Pyong Sun which practically wrecked the Chang Moon Sa; the heavy medical bills; the disgusting strikes of the S.H.C.S. boys; the flood then the drought; the disputes with the miners who threaten to destroy the hill on which our father is buried―all this has kept me in anxiety and worry from one end of this 甲子年 to its last days. Thank God, however all haven't been as bad as I feared.

Seoul home. Being my 61st birthday had family reunion. Uncle came for the occasion from A-San. God who has been good to me during the past 60 years has been specially good in giving us mild weather during the last few days so that nobody suffered from cold in preparing for the little family feast. I have made it a rule positively to be observed by my family to keep the day without as little ostentatiousness as possible.

My plan for the next School Year for S.H.C.S. was to have 劉秉敏 for the Head Teacher as hitherto and 元洪九 for 庶務主任. As 李萬珪 was to go to 培花學堂, 鄭 was to take charge of the Chemistry and Physics. We must have a competent Mathematic teacher, so we engaged 金鍾商 to join our faculty from April 1st. 梁在順 had to be disengaged. As we would have only 10 hours for Ethics(修身) we decided to disengage 金鎭□. 文一平 desired to go to Japan for further study so we have to engage a new history teacher. 崔重淳, the book-keeper resigning to go into business we thought of engaging 尹鎭聲. Our clerk 金應用 being too young and careless we had planned to have a new man. Pastor 朴斗華 being appointed to teach in the Seminary, we got Mr. 金延祐 to fill his place. The ex-magistrate, 山崎's place as a Japanese language teacher, a new qualified man had to be engaged. We would have to get someone to provide for 10 hours of English and 8 hours of mathematics. We are to have no more than 9 sections. During my absence Mr. Snyder mopped out a completely new plan with 李萬珪 for head teacher. That was very queer. But as I have decided to resign at the end of March, I would help Snyder to from a faculty which he can rely upon. But I fear 元洪九 will make trouble.

This is the First day of the First Month of the Old Calendar. 甲子年 with its fearful floods, droughts, storms, strikes etc. is gone. Thank God through it all God has brought us, family and all, safe thus far. Grant we as Koreans and individuals, may have a more prosperous and peaceful year. Amen!

Left Seoul 11:50 a.m. train for 新項里 with cousin 致昭 and 璋善. 平澤 at 3 p.m. Auto to 新項里. Evening worship in the upstair rooms of our two story building. A Christian mission has been in operation here for the last 12 months under the charge of a Bible woman whose salary of ￥20.00 cousin 致昭 and I are responsible. Who knows what a great work may evolve from this humble beginning? One of the by-products of the mission will be that our poor relatives will in a few months have acquired a sufficient number of Biblical phrases to sanctify and strengthen their demands for rice and cash.

新項里本第. After breakfast went to 道谷 with uncle, three cousins and 璋善 to pay our respect to the graves of grandfather and grandmother. Rain feared but instead snow from about 2 p.m. most of the p.m.

Wrote a letter to 劉秉敏 in which I told him that, as I had determined to carry out my intention of resigning my position which I had formed three years ago, and as Mr. Snyder had formulated a definite program for 1925~26, he, Mr. 劉 should consult with Mr. Snyder and make out a plan most advantageous to the school.

The scarcity of water is one of the three great disadvantages under which 新村 labors. My cousin and I have sunk three wells but none of them has proved a success while what little water they give is brackish that it is altogether unfit for drinking purpose. The other two disadvantages are the blind conservatism of our relatives who try to keep up the old yangbanism and the servile dependents(30 families) whose parasitism has degenerated into actual beggarism.

A year or two ago a wave of anti-alcoholism and of anti-tobaccoism swept over the country. After a few months of sapsmodic attempts at temperance the country folks drink and smoke harder than ever. No wonder a Japanese is reported to have said, when the Koreans talked big about quitting pipes etc. "If you Koreans quit smoking, we Japanese will quit eating."
