Seoul home. A few members of the Central Y. Directors and of the National Committee invited Mr. Fletcher Brockman to an informal conference held at Mr. 閔泳瓚's villa in 城北洞. Delegates to the Conference form 咸興, 宣川, 平壤, 光州, also present. Meeting began about 11 a.m. Reports from the various Y's heard. The outcome of the Conference was that the whole territory of Korea is to be divided into so many―say 10 or 12―Y.M.C.A. Regions, with a center at each; that emphasis should be laid on village work; that foreign secretaries should act as expert advisers and not to be tied to a place etc. I invited the delegates from the country to supper at Central Y.

Left Seoul 8:05 a.m. train for Song Do, with Messrs. Fletcher Brockman, Cynn and Frank B. at Song Do Station we were met by Messrs. Gerdwin Anderson, Synder and Lim. Autoed to Mr. Snyder's home. Fletcher B. asked Mr. G. the fusibility of securing the use of the Central Hall for starting the Y.M.C.A. movement in Song Do. Mr. Gerdwin and other missionaries present seemed all approve the plan and they expressed themselves to be hopeful to secure the consent of the mission for turning the Central Hall over to Y.M.C.A. work, under certain conditions.

4. 5월 4일

11
4th. Monday. Bright. Hot.

12
Song Do home. Mr. Gerdwin called a meeting of the pastors of city and of a few leading young men of the Church at the Central Hall 中央會館. 4 p.m. I presented the proposition of Mr. Fletcher Brockman to start the Y.M.C.A. work in Song Do. Everybody seemed to like the proposition but the budget of ¥8,000.00 a year scared all like a nightmare. Finally a committee was appointed with power to call a meeting of some of the leading young men of the city to consider the possibility of maintaining a Y.M.C.A. in Song Do. Left Song Do for Seoul 7:50 p.m. train. Met Messrs. Brockman, Cynn, Frank B., Barnhart on the train returning from Pyong Yang.

5. 5월 5일

14
5th, Tuesday. Bright. Hot.

15
Seoul home. After breakfast, took 恩姬, 明姬, 璋善, 琦善, to 城北洞 for a picnic. What little water there is in the stream is rendered unspeakable dirty by washer women. Very hot. Yet the precious children seemed to enjoy the outing. Returned home about 1:30 p.m.

6. 5월 6일

17
6th. Wednesday. Bright. Hot.

18
Left Seoul 11:50 a.m. train for 平澤. Arriving there about 3 p.m. came to 新村 home in auto.
19
After a hearty meal took a refreshing nap.
20
李谷領(守鳳) whispered to me tonight, the following information against Paik Woon Sang.

21
1. He has bought rice fields last year to the value of ¥3,500.00 or more.
22
2. He has already purchased fields which yield him 500 bags of unhulled rice.
23
3. For every bag of unhulled rice sold he "eats" a 斤, all told amounting to something like 2,000 yen or more.
24
4. He has taken away the wife of a farmer to be his concubine.

25
Of course what 李 says about Paik loses half of its value when I remember that there is no love lost between the two. The other half is equally useless from the fact that 李 is a incorrigible scamp to whom nobody would confide a cash.
26
Then again even if Paik did prove unreliable I have no one better in sight to replace him. On the whole I believe that Paik is the most trustworthy and most careful man in my employee at present.

32
Left 新村 8:30 a.m. for 平澤 where I boarded the 9:17 a.m. train for 天安. Arriving I had to wait more than 2 solid hours before the train for the hot springs started. A refreshing bath―then luncheon. Visited father's tomb.
33
Left the hot springs 6:50 p.m. for 天安 where I took the 7:58 p.m. train for Seoul. Arrived home about 11. A lovely night fitly described by the stanza:
34
花有淡香月有陰 春宵一刻直千金
35
Cousin 致昭 is building a pretentious "Sarang"―with "Palace roof". I would have preferred a more modest style of building. The squalid surroundings of the village and the lack of good supply of water make such a building look a little out of place.
