The rain during last 24 hours has worked havoc on the villages located on the 南川江 in 密陽 district, reducing hundreds of poor people homeless and foodless. For the last few years the world at large and Korea in particular have suffered so much calamities that people have grown callous.

24
8th. Tuesday. Beautiful. Warm.

25
Seoul home. The Annual Conference was closed at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Weems was appointed the Principal of the Song Do Higher Common School.
26
金基□ tells me that a Chinese carpenter or mason works 10 hours a day coming before electric lights go out and stick to work until after dark for ¥1.20 a day. A Korean carpenter or mason comes 2 hours later and quits 1/2 hour earlier not only but he would not work unless watched. He gets ¥1.80. Any wonder the Korean workmen are being gradually crowded but of employment?

28
9th. Wednesday. Beautiful. Warm.

29
Welcome letter from 光善.
30
Left Seoul 8:05(8:55) train for Song Do. The Board of Directors met at Mr. Deal's home. Mr. Deal's department showed indebtedness of ¥ 200,000.00. His mistakes. (1) To have enlarged the plant without consulting the mission. (2) To have contracted debts with the hope of meeting them by selling the goods. (3) To have carried on such a work on debts by borrowing money from A to pay the debt due to B etc.
31
The Board appointed a Committee of 3 to see to it that no new debt should be incurred without its approval.

Thus I am formally relieved of my burden as the Principal of the Song Do High Common School, after 3 years of stormy experience. I pray the God Almighty bless the school more and more as time goes.

With Cousin 致昭 and 明燮 left Seoul 8:05 a.m. train for 長湍. Thence on an auto to 石柱院 about 11 a.m. From there walked to 梧陰里. For the first time in my life we paid our respect to the remains of our great ancestors, 梧陰, 陶齋. Our 十五代祖 彰 was the first of our 尹 clan who was buried here, more than 500 years ago.
51
Put up at the home of 尹奎榮 who entertained us royally.
52
In this valley, the clan of 尹 has lived and is living the life of Rip Van Winkle. The villagers―of 尹 clan―are proud but poor.

68
Mark Twain is said to have said: "Pretty, poor materials went into the making of man. God must have him at the end of the week when He was tired." Compare this with the remark invented by some Korean preacher to the effect that God must have spent four days of the week to the making of the Diamond Mountains and two to the rest of the world.

Hear that Mr. 李秉輝 passed away yesterday. He risked his life by escaping with father from Taiwon Koon in 1882 to Japan. During the last few days 尹當善 and 李秉輝 two landmarks of the old generation have gone. I feel lonesome.

25. 9월 26일

89
Seoul home.

26. 9월 27일

91

92
Seoul home. Whether as servants or as employees, the inefficiency and worse still the dishonesty, and worst of all, the ingratitude of the Korean is simply appalling. Living examples: 柳莫東, 金顯英, 兪鎭昌, 金澤鉉, 姜文秀, 郭바위, 孫秀年, 安□道 etc. Years of generous treatment seem to arouse no sense of gratitude in these men but they complain that their miserable services are not properly paid.
93
The extreme meanness of human nature is illustrated by the fact that men who are perfectly useless as friends often prove to be most annoying as enemies. It's a simple blasphemy to say that man was created after the image of God―at least the God of Christ.

27. 9월 28일

95
28th. Monday. Beautiful. Warm.

96
Seoul home.

Seoul home. The Powers that be have built a Shinto Shrine for Korea at the outlay of ¥2,050,000.00. Two objections may be raised against such a work. (1) A Shinto Shrine has no meaning for the Koreans. (2) That money could or should have been now for some useful enterprise― such as irrigation, road building or some preventive measures against flood etc. To the first objection, the obvious answer is: the Shrine is for the Japanese and not the Koreans. For in 20 years the city of Seoul will be as thoroughly Japanese as the city of Tokyo. There will be no Koreans living in any of the important sections of the Capital. In 40 or 50 years the whole Peninsula of Korea will be likewise Japanese occupied while the mass of the Koreans will have been driven out. That's the Japanese plan of possession-dooly and carefully carried out, all the official pretentious working for the Korean people notwithstanding. As for the objection No. 2, Japan can well afford to spend that much money when one remembers the fact that Shintoism with its fables, more or less cunningly devised has been and is the centre and rallying point of the Japanese loyalty and patriotism. The day Shintoism goes Japan will go too. You see!
