Lovely weather for this time of the year. Took 明姬, 璋善 and 琦善 with me and we had a delightful walk to and from the 翠雲亭 hills. On the way home, 琦善 and I went into 2nd cousins home and had a chat with cousin. He told me that his son 潽善 asks for £800/sterling for his school expenses, and all this for mere literary education!

Seoul home. Received a letter from Helen telling me that she had resigned her position from the Advertiser. My answer: Your letter of the 1st inst. just to hand. Its contents―your behavior―seems to me so extraordinary that I am simply dumbfounded. Here is a girl just out of school who found a work which she could do well not only but so well that people offer to double her pay inside of 6 months. Yet she gives it up simply because the work is not unique enough! To be unique one needs not try to walk on his head. To do a thing better than others is, to my mind, uniqueness. Besides you ought to be useful before being unique. Your Emersonian type of shrieking individualism is sheer conceitedness and unadulterated selfishness. Again you complain of having no decent clothes etc. Yet you throw away a ¥200 job for nothing. I don't know what to say further. (Didn't mail this )

Seoul home. 明姬, 寶姬, 瑛姬 all have cold. The latter owes her continuous cold and cough to the excessive heat in which she is kept by her ignorant mother. The little thing is literally a hot house plant.
