Seoul home. A dinner was given at the official residence of the Governor General in the name of Baron Saito―who is now in Tokyo in honor of Barons 林權助 and 大倉晋八郞. The Korean guests were 李趾鎔, 李達溶, 韓昌洙, 閔泳瓚, 韓相龍, 李允用, 權重顯, 閔商鎬, 李珍鎬 and myself. Baron Hayashi spoke of the wonderful improvement he sees to have been done during the last 15 years. The old man 大倉 praised Baron Saito whose goodness and justice have given so much prosperity and happiness to the people of Korea etc. Certainly these men have only too good reasons to be proud and happy. But in proportion to their happiness how ashamed and miserable we Koreans must have felt―for the improvements are of the Japanese, by the Japanese and for the Japanese―and not for the Korean.

Seoul home. I don't remember when I have seen such a warm October. Ever since he night market(夜市) was started 7 or 8 years ago the 31st Sept. has been the its last night on account of the cold weather. But this Fall the weather has been so beautifully warm that the night market still goes on.

Mother-in-law passed away about 9 tonight. As she was struggling between life and death her elder daughter and another woman called and repeated the name of 地藏菩薩 and 觀世音菩薩南無阿彌陀佛 without ceasing―in the hope these Buddhas would spare the departing soul from hardships of hell and transport it as soon as possible to paralyze 巫堂 and artful. Buddhist priest will squeeze the last copper from the poor woman.

Seoul home. Rain or shower between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The 歐美留學生 Club was entertained by me at 明月館. Forty one present. Some of them proposed that we build a club-house at the cost of from ¥20,000.00 to ¥30,000.00. When so many plants and institutions which have been in operation for the past ten or more years are starving―literally starving for lack of support―it is pure non-sense to try to spend 20 or 30 thousand yen for mere club purpose. This kind of proposal, it must be noted ones―mostly from fellows who have nothing to pay.

Seoul home. Mother-in-law's funeral today. Buried in the 伊泰院 public cemetery. The road leading from the village to the ground is simply wretched. Shame on the Japanese authorities who leave this road as it is when they squeeze every sen out of the Koreans' pockets to make good roads and streets wherever Japanese are to be benefitted thereby.
