With an education that very few Korean girls have, Helen clerks for the Japanese instead of doing something for the betterment of the women of Korea the vast bulk of whom are sunk deep in ignorance and superstition. Helen devotes her leisure hours in frivolous amusements with frivolous men and women who have no doubt a hearty contempt for her.

Dr. Brunner had visited over 30 villages in all parts of Korea to investigate the rural conditions. He said the economic depression of the Korean farmers is due to 4 main causes so far as he is able to see and judge the situation: (1) The world-wide agrarian complaints of high interest and low prices. (2) The flood of machine-made commodities destroying the domestic hand-industry of the peasants. (3) The prodigality of the Korean people in general―living above their income. (4) The laziness which one sees everywhere in Korea.
