Seoul home. Helen returned from Tokyo. Over education has refined out of her all the wholesome elements of womanly nature―of reverence, of faith and of unselfishness. She is skeptic, pessimistic, selfish and frivolous. She thinks Hawaii is best place for her. But until she quits her notion or ambition of doing something "unique"―something which nobody else is doing―and decides to make herself useful, she will find no friend and no peace, anywhere under the sun. She wants to be "let alone," "independent." Yet she does nothing to enable her to have an independent living. She wants others to pay for her independence!
46
15th. Tuesday. Gloomy. Chilly―Icy cold.
49
16th. Wednesday. Cloud and sun. Chilly.

Helen thinks and says that teaching; Y.M.C.A. or Y.W.C.A. work; domestic science or duties; Kindergarten―to her all these things are too common, since anybody can do those things. She wants to work as a Korean but not "for Korea"―she wants to do something "unique", "grand" for the whole world. What Festus said to Paul may be said to Helen: “Much learning doth make thee mad". Only would to God Helen were mad in the sense Paul was mad!
53
17th. Thursday. Bright. Cold.
54
Seoul home. 1 p.m. went to the C.C.C. Commencement exercises. I made a short talk. On our way home, we, Messrs. 具滋玉, 申興雨, 兪億兼, 李春浩, 李觀鎔, Mrs. Yu 珏卿, Miss Helen Kim and I, went into the 元奉寺 temple for lunch. Returned home fairly tired.
56
18th. Friday. Cloud and sun. Mild.
58
Finds 李商在 sinking gradually. So far as he is concerned personally it would be all right for him to go; but for the Koreans, I do wish he could live even a few years longer. I feel so oppressively lonesome as Pastor 崔炳憲 and Mr. 李商在 are struggling with last illness.
60

Wife and I with our children entertained Dr. and Mrs. Harper, Mr. New Ⅱ Han and his Chinese wife to a Korean dinner at 食道園. Dr. H. graduated from the Theological Dept. of the Vanderbuilt University in 1888. I met him in Wesley Hall.

He said wearily, "What's use if it grows fine(조화지면 무엇하나) .” When I held his soft hand in mine and caressed it lovingly he said, "今監가게. 보기시른데 웨 그리오나." I said , "보구십허오지 누가 보기시려와요." He answered, "보구십허온다면 情이 아니지 보기 시려오지.”

Seoul home. I sent 明燮 to inquire about the condition of Mr. 李商在. The old man said to 明燮 as he left the room, "Tell Mr. Yun not to trouble himself to come and see me". Then after a few moments of silence: "佐翁 혼자 彰文社 일노 애를 써서 未安해".

95
Seoul home. Mr. Yi Sang Jai(李商在先生) passed away about 11:30 last night. Korea has lost in his death a great man―who kept through 78 long years of untold evils―the simplicity, the purity of motive and the loftiness character of a true man.
97
31st. Thursday. Bright. Pleasant.
98
Seoul home. Called on Mr. and Mrs. Gerdin at the Woman's Theological School to bid them goodbye. So sorry to them leave Korea possibly for good. Mr. G. is one of the finest specimens of a Southern gentleman. He has been a strong and wise counselor for the whole Southern M.E. Mission in Korea. There is hardly any one in the field to take his place.
