Seoul home. Spent the p.m. at the 傳巖亭, with 李鍾元氏. He suggested this name of the new house on the ground that village is 付岩洞 ; and that the famous 傳說 of ancient China was called to rule the empire as the Prime Minister while he was building something in the district called 傳巖(築于傳巖) . The characters 付岩 sound exactly like 傳巖. A perfectly Korean, yet a clever way of naming things of the sort.

Seoul home. To the station to see Dr. Gale and his family leaving Korea for good. His departure is a distinct loss to Korea. He had done more any other single missionary to introduce the Korean literature to the world. No one to succeed him in sight. It's somewhat sad that his too pronounced pro-Japanism has to a great measure estranged the young men of Korea from him. So sorry to see him leave us, perhaps forever.

Seoul home. Per 8:05 train mother, 叔母任 and 天安妹氏 went to Song Do to stay sometime during the summer. Spent the p.m. at 傳巖亭. As I struggled up the hill, an intelligent villager going the same way, said "This road is so bad. There is one good thing about this bad road; it keeps the Japs out of our village. When the roads get improved the Japs will rush into our 彰義門外 villages and take away our livelihood." A very sensible grasp of the whole situation. The improvements of the means of transportation of communication etc. etc. which Japanese propagandists and their friends so much brag about as great blessings to the Korean people are really a curse to them. However the blame is 50 and 50 between the cold blooded Japanese and the never-doing-well Koreans.
