Seoul home. The Annual Conference of the S.M.E. Church of Korea began today. A churchful of delegate looking all devout Christians. I couldn't help asking how many of them―missionaries excepted―one would feel safe to entrust with positions which require honesty and efficiency. That is, how many of these Christians one would prefer to non-Christians to be put in charge of a farm or a house or an office or a factory? The Koreans are well up in emotional or sentimental virtues―but sadly lack the sense of responsibility and of rectitude in matters of business. Christians are not much better than non-Christians in this respect.

Seoul home. Dr. Reid of the Ivy Hospital said in the Conference that missionaries made a mistake to make healing the physical ailments the main and first object of the hospital and the preaching of the Gospel the secondary object. From now on this idea or principle must be reversed. A mission hospital is better closed if its main object is to cure diseases. Therefore he want a first class preacher for his hospital rather than first class doctors. What a nonsense. If that's his idea of a hospital certainly it would be better to close it. A sick person goes to a hospital not to hear sermons but to cure his sickness. Good and efficient treatment by skillful doctors and kindly nurses all serving in the spirit of Christ will win the patient sooner to the Gospel than all the prayer meetings and perfunctory sermons. one only too often sees inefficient doctors and rude and rough nurses carry on in a mission hospital.
