1. 4월 1일

2
1st. Monday. Pretty. Too cool.

3
Seoul home. 6 p.m. went to Dr. Hardie's where the Fellowship League met to hear Bishop Baker on the trend of thought in America. This League was started some four years ago by 趙炳玉 and few others to promote a more intimate friendship between the missionaries and Koreans.
4
As I then told Mr. 趙, the scheme has not succeeded very well―simply because, human nature remaining what it is, a group or class of men and women with consciousness of national or racial superiority can't very well mix with another group or class of men and women who are conscious of national or racial inferiority. All efforts at social gatherings of Japanese and Koreans or of foreigners and Koreans have failed for the simple and sufficient reason that blood is thicker than water and that instinct is stronger than reason. As long as an American girl would blush to be seen to walk or dance with a Korean young man so long will it be useless to attempt at any social mixings. Nothings come of it except bad feelings!

Seoul home.

3. 4월 3일

9
3rd. Wednesday. Pale. Positively cold.

10
Seoul home. A snowless winter has been succeeded by a rainless Spring. This long continued drought is causing much alarm among the farmers. Yet the price of rice is kept down by the cold blooded tricks of the Japanese official and private, below 7 sen per kin.

7. 4월 7일

21
7th. Sunday. Pretty. Pleasant.

22
Left Seoul 9:30 a.m. for 溫陽溫泉 to erect a stone tablet on father's grave. A stone flower pot on a handsome stone stand to be placed where table-stone or 床石 is placed in front of the tomb. A nice stone trimming for the entire length of the raised earthen platform on which stands the tomb. A pair of stone "candle sticks" or 燭坮石 a few yards from the tomb. These stone articles didn't arrive from the 天安 station until dark.

8. 4월 8일

24
8th. Monday. Rain. Mild―Positively cold p.m.

25
溫陽溫泉. Welcome rain from about 2 a.m. up to 4 p.m. Left 溫泉 4:25 for Seoul, leaving 明燮 and Allen to supervise the proper placement of the stone articles.

9. 4월 9일

27
9th. Tuesday. Pale. Pleasant.

28
Seoul home. 3 p.m. attended the memorial service held at the 公會堂 in honor of Mr. 池上政務總監 who died a few days ago. The service was simple and solemn. But the Japanese Buddhist priests made the scene somewhat amusing to me by making strange noises in reading certain Buddhistic litany to help the departed soul to go to the Buddhistic paradise.

10. 4월 10일

30
10th. Wednesday. Bright. Cool.

31
Left Seoul 7:30 for 溫陽, having received a telegram from 明燮 to the effect that all the stone work on father's tomb had been finished yesterday. Arriving at the 溫泉 about 11:15 a.m.
32
had a bath and lunch. Then to father's tomb. All seems to be well placed. The stone articles, the tablets and the expenses of transportation and workmen etc. have cost me more than a neat thousand yen. I haven't hesitated to spend this much for father's tomb, but I wouldn't care to spend a tenth of that sum for my own tomb.
33
Returned to Seoul per 7:25 p.m. train.

11. 4월 11일

35
11th. Thursday. Pale. Pleasant.

Seoul home. We Koreans are fond of embellishing our ancestral graves with stone articles. Some of Song Do people who live like hogs during their lifetime, spare neither money nor pains to beautify their graves. But everytime I see or hear a Korean who occupied some high official position during the last stage of the Korean dynasty, lavishes money for the embellishment of his grave. I am reminded of a remark which Mr. 李奎完 made to prince 朴泳孝. The Prince, some years ago expressed a regret to Mr. 李 that he, Mr. Pak, had failed to invite him, Mr. 李 to the celebration of his 61st birthday. Mr. 李 just like him, bluntly answered: "What have we, Your Excellency or I, done to deserve the celebration of our 61st birthdays?" That's so! What have we done to deserve the embellishment of our graves? It's shame rather than honor, for a Korean who held some ministerial position under the last Emperor of Korea and who contributed directly or indirectly to the ruin of the nation to have fine stone monuments on his grave.

15. 4월 15일

47
15th. Monday. Pretty. Cool.

48
Seoul home. From 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Committee on Union of the Methodist bodies in Korea met at the Women's Bible School under the Chairmanship of Bishop Baker. The final decision of the meeting was expressed in the following statement which I offered and which the Committee accepted: "We wish for the union of the two methodist bodies in Korea into a united self-supporting church, providing at the same time form a vital relation with the mother churches in America, leaving the means and ways of such a relation to the judgment of the Joint Commission to be appointed by the two General Conferences in America and by the Annual Conferences of Korea."

16. 4월 16일

50
16th. Tuesday. Pretty. Cool.

51
Seoul home.

17. 4월 17일

53
17th. Wednesday. Pretty. Cool.

54
Seoul home. Went ot 水原 with Mr. Cynn, Miss Helen Kim and Mrs. 兪珏卿, to meet Dr. Mott and party, per 2:30 p.m. train. Returned by the Express with Dr. Mott and party.

18. 4월 18일

56
18th. Thursday. Pretty. Cool.

57
Seoul home. 9:15 a.m. the National Christian Council(朝鮮基督敎聯合公儀會) began its session in the Central Y. auditorium. Delegates hundred in all. Dr. J. Mott opened the Conference with a powerful address.
58
Presentation of the Topics to be discussed by the chairman of the 4 groups, in the afternoon. Group meeting from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the whole program, Dr. Mott leaves nothing to chance.
59
Supper at Mr. Barnharts' given in honor of Dr. Mott. Was interested to hear Dr. Mott say that war-books and detective stories have been his unfailing remedies for sea-sickness.

19. 4월 19일

61
19th. Friday. Pretty. Cool.

62
Seoul home. The second day of the National Council Meeting. Group meetings in the morning. Reports from groups in the afternoon.
63
Dr. Lyon came to Seoul ten days ago to prepare program, place of meeting etc. for the Conference. Failing to secure the use of the Chosen Hotel for 3 days, he got the Keijo hotel(京城ホテル) for the purpose. Mr. Cynn and others protested against the arrangement and we finally succeeded in persuading Dr. Mott to hold the Conference in the Central Y. This change proved one of the major causes of the success of the Conference. What a miserable and hateful failure the whole thing would have been, had we held the meetings in the Japanese hotel in the Japanese settlement!

20. 4월 20일

65
20th. Saturday. Pale―Rain between 2 and 7 p.m. Cold.

66
Seoul home. The National Council Meeting came to close this morning about 11:30. As usual Dr. Mott closed the meeting with a strong address.
67
With, Dr. Mott took lunch at the official residence of Gov. General, General Yamahashi, the Gov. Genl. whom I had the first chance of seeing at a close range, seemed to be nervous but lively and sociable man. Returned to Y.M.C.A. with Dr. Mott about 2 p.m. The whole afternoon he had conference with the Y. workers about rural work. Supper together.

21. 4월 21일

69
21st. Sunday. Pretty. Rather too cool.

70
Seoul home. With 埼, 明, 寶, 暎 called on Dr. and Mrs. Mott at Chosen Hotel. Miss Elinor Mott, a very sweet and handsome girl, took moving pictures of our children.
71
8 p.m. went to Station to see Dr. Mott and party off for Moukden. Dr. Mott's visit has left very fine impression on all. His visits are of great value to the Christian cause in Korea.
72
A little 8 year old girl who spent a Summer at Dr. M's home said that Dr. Mott had many books in his rooms; and that she had read everything worth reading. That reminds me of our 寶姬 who, one day returning from the kindergarten, told me that she had learned everything in the English language. I asked her to say some, she said "A, B, C, D, E, F, G!"

22. 4월 22일

74
22nd. Monday. Beautiful. Pleasant.

75
Seoul home. A tram car over loaded with the 3rd and 4th year girls of the 進明高等普通學校 in turning the curb between 積善洞 and Western corner of the 景福宮 at full speed, got off the rails and was capsized. 70 girls got more or less seriously injured. A Japanese teacher and a few girls almost fatally hurt―report says. The fault entirely with the Elecrtic Co. Had seven Japanese girls been injured by a like accident. The whole Japanese population―official and private―would be frantic with rage bringing the guilty Co. to a sense of duty. But seventy Korean girls injured―who cares? Neither the official, nor the police, nor the public(Japanese) will do anything to redress the wrong.

23. 4월 23일

77
23rd. Tuesday. Pale. Cool.

78
Seoul home. Spent the a.m. at 傳巖亭. Rain from 3 p.m.

24. 4월 24일

80
24th. Wednesday. Pale. Pleasant.

81
Seoul home. Understand that Messrs. 韓相龍, 朴永哲, 李進鋊, 元眞常 etc., etc. fifty or so in number have withdrawn their membership from 同民社 as a protest against the proposed action of the Japanese Government to place Korea under the direct jurisdiction of the Colonial Dept. to be soon created. These worthies named are going to appoint a Committee to go to Tokyo to present a formal protest to the Japanese Government. They are thinking about asking Prince Pak or me to act as the Chairman of the Committee. Failing which they intend to ask me to bear at least 1/3 of the traveling expenses of the Committee which will amount to ¥3,000.00. Fools! What difference does it make whether Korea is under a Colonial office or a Government General?

25. 4월 25일

83
25th. Thursday. Cloudy―Rain between 11:30 a.m. Pleasant.

84

86
26th. Friday. Cloudy. Positively cool.

87

29. 4월 29일

95
29th. Monday. Pretty. Cool.

96
傳巖亭. Came to the city 11 a.m. to attend the garden party given in honor of the Emperor's birthday at 2 p.m. Was surprised to see the "refreshment" provided for the guests were 2 or 3 pieces of 다시마(a kind of sea weed) ; 3 or 4 shreds of 오징어 ; and a few dry chestnuts plus a tiny sake cup for sake―and no more.
97
Returned to 傳巖亭 about 4 p.m. Took photos of the delightful rocks and flowers of the hills―with our children enjoying the nature's unadorned beauties.

30. 4월 30일

99
30th. Tuesday. Pale. Cool.

100
傳巖亭. Took more pictures. Family returned to city home 4 p.m. after two days of refreshing country life. Wife and children seemed to enjoy the change very much.
