Seoul home. Went to the Pagoda Restaurant 6 p.m. at the invitation of Mr. 和田, the manager of the 商業銀行. The guests besides myself were Messrs. 嚴柱益, 申興雨, 崔□□, 李漢福, 鄭大鉉, 黃(a Buddhist) , 金鎭玉, 張斗鉉, 鄭黃朝. Two Japanese 藝者 and 4 Korean 妓生. Japanese sake supplied. The host, Mr. 和田 declared himself a great friend of or for the Koreans. He said that he had told the present Gov. Genl., Genl. Ymanashi, that he is the worst―littlest―Gov. Genl.Korea has had so far etc. Was bored beyond endurance as the men got drunk. Wine and women―what a temptation! The best thing for a young man is never to expose himself to such temptations. The Korean wives don't know how to please their husbands―how to make homes agreeable to them. When a young man is thrown into the company of ki-saings, pretty, bright, agreeable he is more than an ordinary man who can resist the temptation of being attracted by such women.
7
A Japanese entertainment where wine and dancing girls dominate degenerate into intolerable scenes of disorder I object to such entertainment, not because I am too good but because I am too weak.

Seoul home. With 璋, 埼, 寶 spent the afternoon at 傳巖亭. Home after 7 p.m.
17
Mr. 具滋玉 left for America 10:20 p.m. I shall miss him in the Central Y. He incurred the ill will of the young men on the Y. staff by not raising their salaries, by opposing to thoughtless expenditures, and by his short temper and oftener than not by his sharp tongue. Surprised to hear 玄東完 and 洪秉善 are two of the leaders of the anti-Koo party. Mr. Cynn is to act as General Secretary pro-temp. He is unquestionably the strongest and ablest man the Y. work in Korea has; but I fear his too "high-kara"ism may plunge the Central Y. into a deeper mire of financial difficulties.

Seoul home. They, the Central Y. have a little exhibition of the Korean products―朝鮮物産獎勵會. Very poorly attended―very poorly exhibited. Scarcely anything from the country. The truth of the matter is that the Japanese―private and official don't care to encourage any Korean industry. They frown on any attempt at encouraging the home industry of the Korean as anti-Japanese. What Japanese want is to get raw materials from Korea for Japanese manufacturers.

Cousins 致旿, 致晟 and 致昭 and myself host―the bill to be footed by 致昭 and me. Four 妓生 present. Two of very pretty. Mr. 元應堂 also present. These Korean governors out Jap. The Japanese, at least in appearance and in talk―in the promotion of the Japanese interests in Korea. What else can they do? I liked Mr. 朴.

It is amusing to me to hear a Korean workman using identical arguments against the Chinese coolie as the American laborer uses against the Asiatic laborer in general and the Chinese in particular. The Koreans say (1) that the Chinese take cheaper wages; (2) that they work longer hours; (3) that they live like hogs so that they (4) can send all their savings to their homes.

Left Seoul 7:30 a.m. for 新村 for the double purpose of attending the wedding ceremony of the oldest daughter 禮卿 of 2nd cousin and of paying my respect to uncle whose birthday will be cerebrated tomorrow. Reached 新村 about 11 a.m. The wedding about 2 p.m.
70
As I paced about after supper, the harvest yard(마당) of our ancestral home, the moon shined full and fair in a cloudless sky. It must have shone as full and fair 70 years ago on the same spot but most of the people who were then above 15 are no more. When this night comes around here 70 years hence none of us who are above 20 now will be here to enjoy this same moon which will shine then as full and fair as it does tonight. Only those children who are below 10 now will then be old men and women―I wonder what they will talk about then?

Seoul home. Went to 昌慶園 with mother, uncle, wife and children. Cousins 致昭, 致旿, 致昞, 趙寔 all went to the picnic. Visited 玉流泉, 演慶堂, 宙合樓, 仁政殿. These places awoke in my memory a train of sad and saddening recollections of the days gone by when I saw the last King and Queen in these places in the summers of 1883 and 1884. 王侯第宅皆新主 普代衣冠□昔時.
