1. 8월 1일

2
1st. Saturday. Rain most of the day.

3
Chemulp Tent Village. Our whole family crowded in one tent 12×12 ft.
4
I enjoy the sea-bathing. My 肩臂痛 or "shoulder and arm ache" from which I have suffered more or less acutely for the last 6 month seems to have been considerably eased, I hope by the benefit of the sea-bathing.

2. 8월 2일

6
2nd. Sunday. Rain―all day long.

7
Chemulpo 天幕村 or Tent Village. Had a very uncomfortable night on account of the heat, and crowdedness inside of the closed tent.

3. 8월 3일

9
3rd. Monday. Rain.

10
Left Chemulpo by 10:25 a.m. train for Seoul. Rain, rain, rain. Arrived home 11:30. Left Seoul for Song Do per 4:40 p.m. train.
11
Rain, mosquitoes and loathsome creeping things are bad enough but not so bad as the constant nagging, scolding, complaining, and whining of the woman who has every reason to be grateful for the good time she is having and who should make every effort to be pleasant―considering the fact the happiness of the little children, in fact, of the whole family depends so much on her sweet temper and tongue. I have to endure and bear with her for the sake of the little children but can't help asking time and again "How could a good God make human nature so damnably bad?"

4. 8월 4일

13
4th. Tuesday. Cloudy. Cool.

14
Had a good rest last night. Left Song Do per 9:55 a.m. Gasoline car arriving at Seoul 11:30. Went to C.C.C. to meet Miss Metzger, a collector of fork-lores of the East at the temporary home of Mr. Choi. Messrs. 李能和, 李□□, 鄭寅寶, 李春昊, 白藥後, 崔□□ and Miss 金信實 were present besides myself. Miss M. spent months in Hawaii where she met Dr. S.M. Rhee―Supper at Mr. 崔's each paying down a yen. I paid for the invited guests ¥5.00.

5. 8월 5일

16
5th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

17
Chemulpo Tent Village.
18
I remember reading in a Chinese Classic the statement: 智者藥水仁者藥山=“A wise(sagacious?) man loves water but a righteous man loves mountains." Now I think I understand what that means. Look at that beautiful, smooth, mirror-like expanse of deep blue sea. Millions of ever sparkling ripples reflecting the lights of heaven. So calm, so peaceful like the broad smiling face of a good hearted old man. Who will suspect any treachery or violence in that bosom? Then the water is so accommodating; so yielding, so pleasant to get along with―it conforms itself to the shape of the surrounding contour of the land. You may throw anything, dirt, rocks, good things and bad things into that indulgent sheet of water―it makes no complaint. One may treat it with impunity―it abides its time. Then the marvelous way it(water) fills every nook and corner and crevice in the hardest rocks bounding the sea―suggestion of the watchful espionage―spy net―that a far seeing nation keeps up everywhere for some future occasions. But all this smiling face, accommodating attitude, good natured endurance are thrown off when storm of action is to be staged. O the treacherousness, the suddenness, the irresistibleness when a sea rages with its might. The sea is symbolical of modern diplomacy. The Japanese nation is like a sea.
19
The constancy and trustworthiness of mountains make them loved by good men.

6. 8월 6일

21
6th. Thursday. Cloudy. Cool.

22
Chemulpo 天幕村.

7. 8월 7일

24
7th. Friday. Cloud―Cool.

25
Chemulpo 天幕村. Had a bad rest last night. Received a letter from Helen. Among things she mentioned what surprised me most are (1) "There was a picnic on Sunday among the Koreans. The members two churches meet in the same park on different sides and don't mix at all. They are almost the same as in Honolulu" (2) "You'll be interested to know I am still deeply in love with Henri... He is so lovely and fine, a perfect aristocrat. I miss and love him as myself―not as some external person.
26
So she is definitely engaged with Henri―whoever he is. She wants me to send her ¥1,000.00 which I promised to send to her as soon as she gets settled. She says "Henri will be unable to pay my expenses till he gets work in New York." So he is poor and jobless.

8. 8월 8일

28
8th. Saturday. Real hot 90˚F. reported.

29

10th. Monday. Cloud. Breezy. Rain 12:30 to 4 p.m.

35
Left Chemulpo 8 a.m. with 琦善 and 益□, the latter on his way to Song Do. After attending to some home affairs, returned with 琦善 to Chemulpo by 3:30 p.m. train.

11. 8월 11일

37
11th. Tuesday. Rain from 6 a.m.―all day long.

38
Chemulpo Tent Village. Had a comparatively undisturbed rest last night. Frequent showers all through the night.
39
But for the fact that Chemulpo is only an hour's ride from Seoul and that there is nothing of an attractive sea beach nearer than Wonsan, nobody would invest an hour or a "yen" in the sea-bathing at Chemulpo. No sand beaches but rocky, dirty, black, miry, mud and mud and mud all along the shore. The hot bathing pool and swimming pools which the enterprising Japanese have created are the attraction that draw thousands of Japanese and hundreds of Koreans from Seoul to Chemulpo in months of July and August. The camp or tent village has nearly two hundred camps. There being no attempt at enforcing sanitary rules, the whole camp area is a big garbage bin and an enlarged water-closet. The two public W.C.s are so badly kept that nothing but absolute necessity makes one to patronize them. The offensive smell and sight of the accumulated and scattered filth all along the sea shore turn the stomach.
40
But if things Japanese go on at present rate in Korea, this place will be made a very popular Summer resort by the art and enterprise of the Japanese, inside of a decade from now. How many Koreans will there be who may be benefited by the improvements?

65
Last night from 12 on the strong gale yesterday evening assumed the character of a wind-storm reinforced by violent rain. The tents whose cords and pikes couldn't hold against the elements. Had to, about 2 this morning, take the tents down, we all crowding into brother 旺's tent. By the activity of 光鉉 through the storm that continued raging, we secured a room in Cafe Mikado, and moved there with our belonings in autos. Thank God we had our brother, 光鉉, 劉東世 and young men from the C.C.C. tent to help us. The old lady of the Cafe Mikado has proved a very good friend to us. Wired 明燮 early this morning. He came down to help us packing. Wife with all her ill temperedness shows herself a capable and strong manager and overseer. The weather improving we all left Chemulpo without any hurt by 2:50 train for Seoul. All is well that ends well. Thank God―for all good and perfect gifts are from him. So far as human power or wisdom go, there is no use of calculating, of planning, of hoping, of expecting of even praying except the prayer of the publican, the Lord's Prayer and prayer-spirit given in Philippians IV. 6 and 7.

Seoul home. The inventor 孫昌植 from Tokyo called. As expected he wants me to advance him ¥3,000.00 for the manufacture of his "adjustable tables" for which he has received an order or orders to the value of ¥8,000.00. He promises to pay the money back inside 4 or 6 months. I gave him ¥300.00 two years ago. He says he could easily sell his patent to a Japanese firm for ¥2,000.00. Why doesn't he do it? Further he says he had an offer, from an American firm, of the two a Korean fabulous sum of Fifteen Million Yen or Dol, for his unfinished invention along the wireless line 15 million yen or dol.―will make him one of the richest men in Korea. Why doesn't he accept offer. I lent ¥500.00 to Rev. 柳一宣 for certain invention. Not heard of it any more.
