Seoul home. Confined to bed with a bad cold. Cousin 致旴 reported to have been arrested for having swindled ¥3,700.00 out of a fellow named 김옥신. Cousin 致旴 has been carrying on the business of cheating people of their money by various fraudulent tricks, covering sums from a hundred thousand yen to a few yen, for the last twenty odd years.
4
His oily tongue, tricky head, sticky manners backed by the social standing of his family, have enabled him to commit fraudulent deeds with perfect impunity. He cultivates the good will of procurators, especially of the police authorities―by what means devil alone knows-to such an extent that any of his innumerable robberies that would have landed an ordinary miscreant in a jail in no time, has passed harmlessly over him like a drop of rain off a duck's back. His second brother 致昭 have been compelled to stop paying his debt.
5
致旴 has four children by his first wife―a saint. They are all excellent in character. 明善 his second boy, who is in great sorrow on account his father, asks me for ¥300.00 saying that sum would set his father free at once. For 明善's sake I had to give him the money though I feel that his father need and deserve a good shame.

Seoul home. From 10 to 12 Meeting of the Board of Control of the Song Do Higher Common School. One of the items of the agenda was the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Foundation of the school by raising an endowment fund for the school. Mr. Snyder showed his profound ignorance of the time and place he lives in by suggesting (1) that we might ask the Governor Genl. for a substantial contribution; (2) we ought to begin with raising ¥25,000.00 this year, continuing raising the same amount for ten following years until we have ¥250,000.00 or ¥300,000.00 for endowment; (3) and that Mr. 金正浩 of Song Do Electric Company hasn't been affected or hurt by the hard times! I couldn't help saying, to the amusement of other members of the board, the Mr. 金正浩 must be a wonderful man not to have been hit by the hard times which every Korean is smarting under. I told him also that it would be mere waste of time to ask for a contribution from the Governor General or from the Government as for the 25 thousand yen a year for 10 years to come, the idea was so ridiculous that nobody even refuted it.

Seoul home. Spent the day at 傳巖亭 to shun any of cousin 致旴's agents who might ask me to assume his debts. Returning home at 7 p.m. surely cousin 致晠 had called. Also a letter from him written for him by Mr. 韓鎭昌, his maternal uncle. They want me to pay ¥12,000.00 to the creditors of cousin 致旴’s. The Japanese lawyer Mr. Yamaguchi is said to have gotten assurance from the procurator―General Mr. Matsudera, to the effect that cousin 致旴 would be released at once if the sum of twelve thousand yen is presented to the court for the settlement of the claims of the creditors. This is certainly a find world―where a rascal swindles other fellow's money. Then gets the procurator to extort the money from his relatives to pay the debts!

15. 9월 15일

46
15th. Tuesday. Cloudy.

47
Left Seoul 7:34 a.m. Gasoline car for Song Do.
48
My objections to footing the bill for cousin 致旴’s robberies: (1) Devil alone knows what became of the 300 yen which 明善 got from me on the pretext that his father would be released before 12―then 4 p.m. that day. viz: the 1st of this month. Who can tell me that ¥12,000.00 will do a better work. (2) Who will guarantee that cousin 致旴 will quit his meanness if he be released from prison today? (3) His creditors' name is a legion. If they hear that 致旴’s debts have been paid to the amount of ¥12,000.00, they will sue him with the hope of getting some-one to pay them. (4) Besides, my cousins―what right have they to ask me to bear the whole burden? Returned to Seoul by 10:10 p.m. train arriving home after 12.

It took two hours to foot it and when we got to the village where the tombs of my 五代祖母 and 高祖 are located I was pretty tried. had a delicious lunch prepared by the No. 2 wife of 明燮. Then rested until 3 p.m. Had to foot it back to the 安養 station, where we boarded the 5:50 p.m. train for Seoul.

59
19th. Saturday. Beautiful.

60
Seoul home. At 5 a.m. "Extra"s from the city papers flew about, reporting that at 10 last night, the Chinese troops stationed at the North of the city of Moukden(奉天) blew up a part of the Manchrian R.R. and attacked the small Japanese garrison there. The Japanese forces stationed in and near the city at once took the offensive and before 3 a.m. every strategic point in and near the city was completely in the hands of the Japanese―Moukden itself is occupied by the Japanese. What does all this mean?
61
(1) The Japanese in and out of Manchuria have been uneasy about their standing in Manchuria owing to the anti-Japanese agitations of the Chinese nationalists. Japan has been compelled to do something to make their hard earned concessions in Manchuria secure. Manchuria lost Japan has no room for her surplus population not only, Korea itself is threatened. Next to Korea, Manchuria is the life and death problem to Japan. Hence, the military faction in Japan openly says that if Japan fails to improve the present opportunity for the settlement of the Manch. question she will soon be ousted from the only place now left for her expansion.
62
(2) Since Japan has begun, I hope some definite arrangement will be made to give secure to the million Koreans in Manchuria.

65
Seoul home.

21. 9월 21일

67
21st. Monday. Beautiful.

68
Seoul home. The Dong-A-Ilpo, in its editorial about the China-Japan complications, spoke too wisely of the "supervision" and "guidance" which the U.S. of America exercises over the international problems among the Far-Eastern countries. I hear the police is furious about this hint at the comparative weakness of Japan and is talking about taking a drastic measure against the offending paper.
69
Japan being on the war path it is a ticklish time for Koreans to say or write any thing that may touch the sensitiveness of the naturally revengeful Japanese. Mr. Song J.W. should take less wise and more care of what his paper says just at this moment.

22. 9월 22일

71
22nd. Tuesday. Beautiful.

72
Seoul home. 6~9 p.m. supper at 明月館 to welcome Dr. Cynn and Mr. Koo.
73
Wife tells me that about 11 the night of the 18th she had a dream in which someone shouted "War has broken out"("난리낫다“) That awoke her and so scared her that she could hardly sleep again. About 5 the morning of the 19th she heard the jingling of the bells of the newspaper "runners". She sent out a servant to know what the Extra meant and was surprised to hear the servant say "Reports that war has broken out"―난리났대오. Isn't that wonderful?

23. 9월 23일

75
23rd. Wednesday. Beautiful.

76
Seoul home. By 3:35 p.m. train went to Chemulpo with 寶姬 for a hot sea water bath. Returned to Seoul refreshed by 7:05 p.m. train.
77
The Japanese troops in Manchuria have captured all the principal centre―奉天, 寬城子, 吉林, 長春, 鄭家屯, 撫順. The city of Mukden, the political and military capital of Manchuria is in the hands of the Japanese militarists. They have already organized a Municipal Administration Board, its officers all Japanese military leaders.
78
The Coup-détat has been carried out with such a lightening dash that the whole world is too dizzy to form any rational opinion. Yet a few things are plain. (1) The whole things has been carefully mapped out by the Japanese militarists for months―year may be past. The murder of Captain Nakamura, the Chinese outages against the of farmers at 萬寶山; the anti-Chinese rackets in Korea etc. are only convenient steps leading to the sudden leap of the 18th Sept. (2) The economic loss to Japan-the direct expenditure of millions in military operations and the enormous indirect loss by the nation wide boycott against Japanese goods throughout China―can Japan stand the strain―then how long? (3) So far as Korean settlers in Manchuria are concerned, a complete Japanese control of the political and military affairs of Manchuria will be a blessing, since no safety is possible under the Chinese rule.

25. 9월 25일

83
25th. Friday. Cloudy―Rather steamy.

84
Seoul home.
85
(Continued from the preceding page) (4) As to the rightness or wrongness of the Japanese proceedings which of the so called civilized races of the world can throw the first stone at Japan. She has as much right to occupy or annex Manchuria as England had to annex India, or France to occupy Annam etc. etc. etc. America which under Roosevelt who personified brutalism so generously and light heartedly consented to the annexation of Korea by Japan, what face has she―America―to object to the Japanese occupation of Manchuria? Every argument which Japan advanced to justify her annexation of Korea and which Roosevelt and his crowd accepted as the Gospel truth is applicable to Manchuria word for word. Was the Korean Government corrupt and incompetent? So is the Chinese Government in M. Did Japan have special interests in Korea? So she has in M. Would Korea have been a menace to Japan if Russia took the Peninsula? So will be Manchuria. (5) Then the whole matter is reduced to one, and only one, simple proposition. viz: Has Japan power strong enough and purse long enough, to stand the awful strain which the military occupation of Manchuria must necessarily put on her?
