牙山排芳面回龍里 sister's home. Up at 3 a.m. The funeral procession started at 4:30 for the Kim family cemetary 100 li from sister's home. After the procession had left the desolate home cousins 致旴 and 致昭 and I stayed in the "sarang" until 6:30. Little past showers made us feel uneasy about the funeral procession. But fortunately the showers didn't continue long at a time. we, 昭 and I went to 溫泉 by auto about 9 a.m. from 毛山. Had good bath. Left―that is, I and brother 致旺, left 溫陽 for Seoul 3:39 p.m. reaching home a little after 7.

Seoul home. 3 p.m. went to the Chosen Hotel where a large company of Koreans and Japanese were gathered by the invitation of the Administrative Chief, Mr. Imaida(今井田) , to organize an Association for Prevention of Leprosy in Korea (朝鮮癩豫防協會) . The Director of Police Dept. acted as host in the absence of Mr. Imaida. A subscription of ￥300,000.00 was to be raised in Korea in two years for the isolation of the lepers now at large □□. This is one of the best things the Japanese authorities has done or propose to do in Korea. Am sure they will gather money without much difficulty, as no Korean would dare refuse giving more or less liberally when the Director of Police passes the hat around for collection. In September 1931, as the result of the really earnest effort of Mr. 崔興琮, an "Association for studying means and ways for eradicating leprosy in Korea" was formed with a few Koreans. No money could be secured. Hearing of this lepers began to visit Central Y.M.C.A. The thing became rather serious.(To be continued)

Seoul home. 1:02 p.m. went to the Farmer's Conference(農民修養所) for its formal opening. Returned home about 4 p.m. Rain between 8 and 10.

(more about the Leper Eradication Association) Then we proposed the more modest and reasonable plan of raising ￥1,800.00 to rid the city of Seoul of the 30 (so estimated Mr. 崔) lepers who frequent the shops etc. to the leper colony at Ryo Soo 麗水. The Governor Genl. gave ￥100.00 and ￥250.00 for three entire months. Mr. 崔 and 鮮于全 went about for collecting the fund. The utmost they could get amounted to ￥1,278.80. With that the Seoul lepers were sent to the Ryo Soo Colony. We found that the work, if to be done properly should be undertaken by the Government, through the Police Authorities. I am glad the Gov't-Genl. has taken the work in hand. Only I wish the officials had the magnanimity to mention the small efforts of the Koreans.

The guests represented all the geat religions in the city―Confucianists, Buddhists, Shindoists, Catholics, Protestants and others engaged in social-wellfare works. Returned home about 10. Mr. Soda, the gentle and amiable Japanese who is a sincere Christian is the first Japanese who expressed his approval of the high politics of the Militarists in Manchuria.

Seoul home. They want me to assume the Sa-Jangship(社長) of the Chritian Messenger. I wrote to Dr. Cynn definitely refusing to accept the honor. One of the main reasons is that my eyes―right eye especially, are so weak that this is the second time that I haven't been able to read even the newspapers for nearly two months. I gave up reading during the latter part of the Spring and nearly the entire Summer. Now to be a Sajang of a magazine with so weak eyes that I can't read over most of the letters and copies which will be coming in for the paper. The responsibility of a such a position can't be shouldered by a man who can't give his major time and work to the paper. Besides the Christian Messenger is a battle ground of the two factions―the North-West and the South. Since I am enable to control the factions I will be a mere puppet in the hands of one or the other faction, this making myself a ridiculous figurehead.

Seoul home. Supper at Miss Appenzeller's 6 p.m. Messrs. 宋鎭禹, 金性洙, 兪鎭樂, 兪億兼, 崔善益, 申興雨, 金鍾雨, 金一善. Mrs. 兪珏鄕 and Mrs. 金 Melisa present. After supper the question of starting a 後援會 for the Ewha College was discussed. All agreed that it would be a wise step to organize one. A committee of three―Messrs. 申, 兪, 宋, was appointed to make all necessary preparations for the general meeting to convene sometime in January.

Seoul home. 7 a.m. with wife went to Miss Pak In Duk's Sunday Children Hall to hear her report of the work she has been doing for and among the village women. The new room just finished can seat 100 children. It was filled by men and women who are more or less in sympathy with the work of Miss P.I.D. She is certainly a talented woman. Most of the Ewha ladies―Miss Appenzeler to begin with―were there. Miss Helen Kim was conspicuous by her absence. Gossips say H.K. is jealous of the too close attentions which Dr. H.C. pays to P.L.D.P.I.D. has been ostracized by many for her having divorced her husband. But had she not done it, she would have been so buried either in the drudgeries or pleasures of her domestic life, that she could never have been able to go out and about to promote the welfare of rural women. God may have a great work for her to do.

Seoul home. The Finance Committee of the Central Council met from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Board Room of the C.L.S. to pass the work budget of the Korean branch of the F.M.S.(of women) of the North M.E. Church.

The men's Board of Missions of that Church is so hard up for money that they have cut more man 50% of the appropriations they had been sending to Korea. The Pai Chai School isn't going to get any more than750―or something. The majority of the Methodist missionaries have been deep opposed to creating reserve fund for any of their institutions on the ground that it is against the teachings of Christ to lay up treasures on earth. Now that the appropriations from America are withdrawn the institutions are in a hopeless lurch.

Seoul home. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Committee on Missions of the K.M.C. met at the Board Room of the C.L.S. Messrs. Ryang, Auh, 金鍾宇, 韓祤洙, and myself. No missionary present. Resolved to start a movement to raise endowment funds for the maintenance of Churches.

The Northern M.E. Church has decided to recall 20 missionaries on account of the great finacial tightness which the Genl. Board of Missions is experiencing. Dr. Noble is to be recalled from Korea! He and his good wife have been missionaries in Korea over 40 years. They are indispensable to the K.M.C. Would be a great mistake to take them away the N.M.E. Church, in time of prosperity wasted its money in establishing too many missions all over the world and by not laying aside funds for rainy seasons, is suffering from a drastic shortage of income. The Americans of the two branches of Methodism, in matters of spending money have done very much like thoughtless Koreans who happen to have some money.

Seoul home. Mr. 安昌浩 was sentenced to 4 years of penal labor today. The Japanese saturated with war-like principles never forget a kindness received nor forgives an injury sustained. They divide friends and foes with cold blooded distinction. While Mr. Ahn was in the hands of the police he was treated with such a degree of leniency that his friends were tempted to indulge in the delusion that he would be let go free after a more or less formal examination. How long will it take us to know the Japanese?

The B. of Control of the Song Do H.C.S. met at 11 a.m. and after lunch at 2 p.m. Transactions: Upon the recommendations of the Principal, (1) Messrs. 金瑛姬 and 許亮憲 were to be asked to resign at once their salary to be paid to the end of next March; (2) The Principal, Mr. Snyder resignation to be accepted to take effect from the 1st April. In his place Mr. 金俊玉 was elected; (3) The School Budget for 1933~34 was passed as presented by the Principal.

The Ttrennial Meeting of the National Council of Korean Y.M.C.A. met from 10 a.m. at the Central Y. Entertained the delegates, 63 in all, at the 白合園 to a lunch, myself. Afternoon meeting from 2 to 5:30. The Central Y. entertained the members to a Korean supper at 明月館 at 5:30~7 p.m. Night session 7:30 to 9:30.
