Seoul home. Entertained the voluntary teachers of the working boys' night school in the Central Y. to a Korean supper at the 松竹園 restaurant. Whang, a clerk in the Dai-ichi Bank has been teaching in the night school for the last years rain or shine hardly missing his self appointed hours. A remarkable record for a young man who works whole day in a A I Bank office.

John H. Holmes says: "I believe in man, because I believe in human nature.―In essence it is good". I honor him, and I envy him for his optimism. But experiencing the daily exhibitions of cruelty, vanity and unspeakable selfishness in a bunch of women in our family circles; having been and am being, cheated and deceived by all sort of men―many of whom bite the very hand that feels them; and witnessing the awful selfishness, meanness and inhumanity in international and interracial dealings, I can't believe that the human nature is, in essence good. All I can say or believe is that it is not altogether evil, that is; it has some grains of good in a mass of evil. All honors to the few noble and holy men in all ages and in all countries who have tried to develope and cultivate and propagate the tiny seeds of good in the essentially evil nature of the human beast. Every one of us, ought to contribute our mite toward that noble effort of the few great souls. All that is true, but I can't believe that the human nature is more good than evils.

Seoul home. Went to the station to say "Goodbye" to Mr. Nakamura, Vice Chief of the Foreign Affairs Section of the Government Genl. Then from the station autoed to the 飛行場 or "aeroplane ground", with 璋, and 琦, to see the dedication ceremony of the aeroplane No. 1 "Chosen", built with the money subscribed by the Koreans and the Japanese in Korea. The religious part of the ceremony conducted by Shinto priests, was interesting though meaningless to the Korean spectators. What a pity religion, science, politics all are made to serve one end―that of killing of our neighbors. War is the element in which the Japanese nation live and move and have this being as factionism is the element in which the Koreans live and move and have their being.

100
Seoul home.

26. 4월 27일

102
27th. Wednesday. Cloudy most of the day. Chilly.

103
Seoul home. Went to the station(Ryong San) to welcome the generals and officials who returned from the battle fields of Manchuria. Naturally the Japanese community from the highest to the lowest, are making a great deal of the occasion. Every house in town is required to put up the sun flag. Students from the high school up―and from Japanese primary schools―all line up both sides of the streets through which the home-coming warriors pass by. It was remarkably very few Koreans were seen at the station. I think it would do the Koreans good to show more interest in the Japanese efforts in Manchuria.

27. 4월 28일

105
28th. Thursday. Beautiful. Warm.

106
Left Seoul 7:34 a.m. gasolin car for Song Do. Arriving at Song Do home about 9:30 found azalia, canaries and sakura all in their glory. Returned to Seoul per 1:48 p.m. train.
107
It looks very likely and very natural that Japan is going to have a tough time of it in making Manchuria safe for the Japanese interests. For guerilla warfare the Chinese have all the room they want in the vast extent of the country; all the man power they want in the teeming population of China proper; all the arms and ammunition they want in the "goodwill" and co-operation of the Bolshevik Russia.
108
America and England should let Japan have a free hand in Manchuria simply because that rich territory will promote the "open door" policy of the West better under the orderly development of Japan than under the chaotic misrule of China or the Communistic terrors of Russia. The Japanese occupation of Manchuria may be an evil, but who will deny that it is a lesser evil than the Chinese anarchy or the Russian brutalism?

28. 4월 29일

110
29th. Friday. Pretty.

111
Seoul home. The anniversary of the Imperial birthday was celebrated by the usual garden party given by the Gov. Genl. in the North Palace ground from 2 to 4 p.m.

29. 4월 30일

113
30th. Saturday. Cloudy.

114
Seoul home. The 彰文社 held its tenth annual shareholders' meeting from 4 p.m. The company is in a bad shape thanks to the accelerated depression in the economic li'e of the Korean people, to the cut throat competition among the few Korean owned printing houses; and no doubt also to the inefficiency in the management of the business.
115
An Chang Ho is reported to have been arrested in Shanghai. A Korea Communist threw a hand grenade, amidst the high Japanese dignataries, both civil and military who sat or stood on a platform in the act of celebrating the Imperial birthday in Shanghai. If An C.H. has anything to do with that dastardly deed he will suffer heavily for it. I hope he has too much sense to do anything of the sort.
