Mr. Hong Pyong Sun reports that Mr. An Chang Ho was released by the Japanese Consulate in Shanghai. Hardly to be believed; but if true Mr. An's position, as a leader, will be made quite embarassing among the Koreans who will construe his release as a proof that he is on releasable terms with the Japanese police in Shanghai. I don't believe the report is true.

Seoul home. A misty rain all the day long. A great welcome reception party was given in the North Palace grounds in honor of the military officials, who had recently returned in triumph from Manchuria. 3,600 people paid two yen admission fee for the party. The Government Genl. is reported to have contributed ￥3,000.00 to the entertainment. The Prefectural Office contributed as much I understand.

Went to the airplane ground 9:30 a.m. to see the "christening" or rather "shintonizing" ceremony of the No. II and No. III Chosen detective planes, built by the money subscribed by the "patriots" in Korea. If these planes have built at the cost ￥80,000.00 each, then the Japanese and the Koreans in Korea have already spent ￥240,000.00 for the patriotic aeroplanes. Suppose this handsome sum has been spent in building more primary schools or in some definite constructive work and such as building roads and bridges etc. what a benefit the money would have proved itself to be. Returned home about 2 p.m. By the 3:38 p.m. train went to Chemulpo with 璋, 琦, 寶, 珽 for a esa water bath. We all enjoyed it but our 珽善 positively refused to go into the bathroom. This little fellow has very strange moods of bashfulness.

Seoul home. Extras this morning report that yesterday afternoon a band of young Naval and Army officials 18 in all, attacked Mr. Inukai, the Premier in his office and shot him dead. They threw bombs at the Bank of Japan building at the Metropolitan Police Station where they short one or two men dead; at the residence of the Grand Chamberlain(侍從長) and of the Minister of Household Dept. at the Headquaters of the Mitsubishi Co.; at the Electric Company; at the Headquaters of the seiyukai. This is a Revolution of the Russian type.

The Tokyo affair of the 15th is extraordinary for severa reasons. (1) The conspirators are actually officers in the Navy and Army while 13 of them are cadets in the Military School. They are all under 30 years of age. (2) Young officers in Naval and military uniforms seize a 78 years old Prime Minister and shoot him in cold blood. Where is the vaunted discipline and chivalry and reverence for age of the Samurais of Japan? (3) Attacking with bombs and hand grenades, the buildings of the National Bank of Japan, of the Mitsubishi Corporation of Electric Generating Plant etc. This is nothing less than the so called direct action of Bolshevism. (4) Invasion with bombs and pistols into the residences of the high dignitaries of the Imperial Household Department and that by uniformed Naval and Army officers shows to what extent the theory and tradition of the divinity of the Reigning Family are being undermined or discredited by the Japanese youth of this generation.

p.m. Left Seoul 12:20 p.m. train for 平澤. Arrived at the station a little past 2:30 where Allen met me. To our Saimal home by auto reaching there about 3:30. Found uncle and aunt all well.

Saimal home. Up at 5:30. Left Saimal about 6:15 a.m. on foot for To-kol to pay my visit to the graves of our grandfather and grandmother. Felt very tired the way back, reaching home about 9 a.m. After breakfast had to go to bed feeling rather sick―A severe chill for an entire hour, then having taken a couple of cups of hot water perspired for two hours―felt better but exhausted.

Saimal home until 2 p.m. Left Saimal by auto 3:50 p.m. for 溫陽 springs. Felt rather unwell n the way. Reaching the springs about 5 p.m. went to the bath straight. Found the hot bath very refreshing. Drank 3 cups of tea for the first time in the .神井館 Dining room. Left the springs by the 6:20 p.m. train for Seoul-connection at 天安 Station about 7:42, reaching Seoul 10:15 Candler met us. It had rained some in Seoul.

In the 2nd Class car I was in, there were three army officials. One sentence in the curse of their random talks sounded very striking to me. One of them said. If a single party Cabinet be formed they will surely by smashed up(政黨內閣ガ出來タラキシトヤラレルヨ一) .

Seoul home. 7 p.m. went to 花月樓 to an entertainment given by Mr. 池田淸, Director of the Police Dept. Ceaseless sake, geisha-dancing, elaborate dishes of food more artistic than appetizing―all as usual, very pleasant to those who abandon themselves to the excitement of wine and women but a perfect ordeal to anybody who can't do so. Returned home about 11. Messrs. 金潤晶, 張憲植, 李恒九(Baron) seemed to enjoy the evening more than anybody else. They sang, danced and howled. Mr. Kim sang even a doxology, saying that such an entertainment was the veritable Kingdom of Heaven.
