Seoul home. Went to Chemulpo sea-water bath with 璋, 琦, 寶, 瑛, 珽 by 12:50 train. Returned home by the 4:10 p.m. train. I didn't enjoy the bathing the crowd being too thick in the bathing pool. 璋善 and 琦善 seemed to enjoy swimming.

Mr. 李光洙 called and said something like this: Mr. Miwa who has been examining Mr. 安昌浩 told Mr. 李 that if Mr. 安 were handed over to the judicial authorities, he might not be able to get out of the prison for a number of years; that he(Miwa) fears that Mr. Ahn's health might give out before long; that in Miwa's opinion, the police authorities could if they would, so manage the matter as to release Ahn without putting through the judicial will. Mr. 李 asked me to see Mr. Tanaka, 田中武雄, the 警務課長, under whose authority Mr. 安 has been undergoing examination. Of course I promised I would try to see Mr. Tanaka.

Seoul home. 8 a.m. called on Mr. Tanaka(田中武雄) of the Police Dept. I briefly told him: since we, Mr. 安's friends, don't know the details that the Police have found in the past records of 安 which they have been investigating during the month or so past, we wouldn't be so presumptuous as to suggest what course the authorities should take in regard to 安. But hearing that he is suffering from a bad health and that he is to be soon handed over to the judicial authorities, I, in behalf of 安'friends and family desire to ask if it is possible for the Police to release him under certain conditions, without subjecting him to judicial processes which will naturally take a great deal of time. Mr. Tanaka said in substance that he had much sympathy for Mr. 安; that he had not discovered any record that shows that 安 had ever used any violent means to attain his ends; but that as he(Ahn) had been transferred to the Korean Police by the Consular authorities in Shanghai, he couldn't be possibly released without first going through certain judicial processes. Tanaka promised, however, that he would keep my request in mind.

Seoul home. A stormy shower between 3 and 4 Mr. Ahn Chang Ho was sent to the prison this afternoon. At the request of Mr. Yi K.S. had a short interview with Mr. Ahn about 4:30 p.m. By the way Miss Helen Kim seems to have been scandalized by the rumor that I have been busy asking the powers that be to release Mr. Ahn. The scandalous quarrel between Dr. Rhee and his supporters and Mr. Ahn, heading the North-Western faction seem to have come to Seoul―to stay! Hugh Cynn, Yu U.K., Kim Helen etc. must feel offended by my open friendliness with the N.W. leaders―like Yi Kwang Su, and above all Ahn Chang Ho. But personal friendship is one thing and political partisanship is another.

Yesterday afternoon had a little boat ride(between 5 and 6 p.m.) on the Han River with 琦, 珽 and 寶. They enjoyed it very much.

About 34 of the parents of the students of the 師範女子附屬普通學校 raised a fund of ￥1,490.00 to buy a piano and to build a sliding stand for the school. The ceremony of presenting the new piano to the school took place between 2 and 4:30 p.m.

Attended, 8 p.m., the farewell meeting which the Dong-A-Il-Po had staged at the Public Hall to give a send off to the middle school boys who have volunteered to give a part of their Summer vacation to the teaching the illiterate rural people the simple art of reading and writing the Korean alphabet.

Seoul home. Worshipped at 宗矯 Church. A terrific torential rain between 12:15 and 1 p.m. transforming the streets into canals. Then rain more or less all the afternoon. By the 4 p.m. train mother left Seoul for Song Do to stay with Allen for the Summer as she had been doing during the last two years.

Left Seoul 10:15 a.m. train for 松田 or Pine-field beech, with wife and children. Awfully hot in the cars. Changed car at 安邊 Station 4:04. Arrived at the 松田 or Pine-field Station about 6 p.m. Met Candler and his children at the station. Found the beach very beautiful. Our Summer house built among the pines is better than I planned costing ￥35.00 per tsubo. I understand the contractor 李口吉 under rated the prices of the materials so that the carpenters haven't been paid their wages yet. All the money has been used in paying for the materials. The subcontractor 田相玉 is reported to be an honest man. I fear I shall have to pay quite a sum to save 田 from a loss.

松田, Pine-field. Not breeze. Hot to suffocation everywhere. Sea-bathing all the morning.

This beach is facing a small bay of beautiful sea with rocky, wooded hills extending into the sea on both sides of the bay. The sand beach is as yet very clean. Back of the beach is spread an expanse of grassy plain thick whit 海棠花 or wild rose bushes. Back of this plan is beautiful pine-covered plain extending on everyside as far as you can see. Another good thing is that you sink a shaft 20 feet anywhere in this wooded sand plain and you get a stream of cold clear water gushing out all day long. The little peninsula―a low hill protected by rocky shore where the sea beats everlastingly, has a small fishing village with cottages better looking than the mud huts in other villages. The sand bank extends so gradually into the sea that those of us who do not know swimming can have all the pleasure and benefit of sea bathing without fear of jumping into an unknown depth.

松田(Pine-field) . Brother 致昌 came to the beach and spent the day with us, He returned to Seoul by the 9 a.m. train. He tells us that it was fearfully hot in Seoul last few days. 90˚ to 100˚or more.
