1. 11월 1일

2
1st. Wednesday.

3
Seoul home. The 14th Annual All Korea Soccer Contest opened, the game from 8 a.m. on the Seoul Stadium. 26 teams on the program.
4
A Dong-A extra reports that the 12th Division (十二師團) stationed at Fukuoka, got order to be ready for immediate mobilization. Add to this the fact that the military authorities at Seoul have designated war correspondents from a few daily papers to go to the front―wherever that be. Mr. Yi Kil Yong of the Dong-A-lI-Po is the only Korean in the bunch. Japan is ready to make a leap on Russia very soon. What a wonderful people―of courage, energy and ambition!

2. 11월 2일

6
2nd. Thursday. Bright―Biting cold.

7
Seoul home. The foot ball game teams have had a cold day today.
8
I gather that the gradual estrangement between Miss Appenzeller and Miss Kim Helen has taken a definite shape and form. Miss A. indignantly said to a Korean friend that K. H. would be glad if she(A) dropped out and that she (A) after having worked so hard for the Ewha College, wouldn't play a figurehead as Dr. Avison does. That explains why Miss Helen was recently relieved of her deanship and promoted to Vice-Presideny of the College under the specious pretext of giving her time freedom to canvass far and wide for raising money for the endowment fund.

3. 11월 3일

10
3rd. Friday. Lovely.

11
Seoul home. Our family went to the Municipal Hall to attend the musical entertainment given by the Seoul Higher Common School for Girls as a part of the celebration of its 25th Anniversary. Our 恩姫 played a piano solo.

4. 11월 4일

13
4th. Saturday. Rain all the morning.

14
Seoul home. The last day of the series of All Korea Football Contest. Nearly 300 boys and young men participating in the games. The Kyong-sin(儆信) School boys behaved badly attempting to mob the Umpire. A boy of the Soong Sil Middle School Team broke his leg and his left shoulder bone. On the 2nd day, a Joong Ang School Team boy hugged an opponent and then struck him in the face. At the end of the 4th day an ugly fight was started by somebody in the Seoul Football Team again. The Chosen Football Team, thus showing that the football players of Korea have much to harm in the way of true sportsmanship.

5. 11월 5일

16
5th. Sunday. Pale sun. Pleasant.

17

6. 11월 6일

19
6th Monday. Bright―Cold.

20
Seoul home. Confind to bed.
21
This afternoon heard that Mr. Nam Koong Uk was arrested for having written a Korean history in a way that the police regard as anti-Japanese.
22
Pilate asked "what is truth?" Has that been answered since the question was put 20 centuries ago? Of course Christians believe that Christ is the Truth. But millions upon millions of noon-Christians don't believe that way. Buddhists have their sets of truth which non-Buddhists don't believe at all. Not only so even among Christians the Catholics believe in what they regards as truth―such as transubstantiation etc. which Protestants flatly deny. The Shintoism teaches somethings for which many devout Japanese believers would rip open their bowls, yet which non-Shintoists regard as rank superstitions. Where is then a truth in religion and philosophy that everybody would and could accept as truth? Thus a very insignificant man like Pilate can ask questions which seven or any number of wisemen can't answer satisfactorily. Hence many a man defines truth to be what a man believes true.

7. 11월 7일

24
7th. Tuesday.

25
Seoul home. Stayed in bed.

8. 11월 8일

27
8th. Wednesday. Cloudy―Mild.

28
Seoul home. My cold not better.
29
A young monarch of a feudal state of the then war-ridden China asked Mencius, the great moral philospher, a question that hasn't been answered during the last 23 centuries. The King said "When or(how) is the world to settle down in peace?" 天下惡乎完.
30
The philosopher: "When the world becomes one, or(Unified) " 完于一
31
King "who can make it one?" 孰能一之.
32
Philosopher: "He who doesn't like to kill people". 不好殺人 者能一之.
33
It looks that the world will not have to lasting peace as long as the human nature prefers war to peace. As long as each state thinks its prosperity, prestige and power can be advanced by sacrificing those of its neighbors; as long as weak nations helplessly cry for peace while strong nations go on preparing for war; in short as long as the human beast remains the meanest in all the animal Kingdom, there is no hope of peace in the world. What then is religion doing? Well, give man a religion. He will make it the pretex for killing those who differ from him. Witness the mutual butchering between Mohammedans and Christians, the Hindus and Islams.
34
Give him a science. He will invent poison, gas and destructive bombs. Give him socialism. He will create a Bolshevist hell everywhere.

11. 11월 11일

43
11th. Saturday. Beautiful.

44
Seoul home. From 9:30 to 11 a.m. the military authorities had an imposing memorial service in honor of the dead soldiers who belonged to the Army of Korea(朝鮮軍) numbering about 260.
45
The Peace Club celebrated the 15th Anniversary of the day when the Great War ended. But everybody instinctively realized the hollowness of celebration in the face of the fact that every great nation in the world is busy preparing for another and greater war. Mr. 李明埴, the speaker of the evening seemed to be compelled to say that it is all a dream to talk about and warless world that peace will never come by way of conferences or even of preaching. He got out of the difficulty by saying that peace will only come when Christ comes second time.

12. 11월 12일

47
12th. Sunday. Pretty. Pleasant.

48
Seoul home. Stayed in bed after taking an electric bath at Dr. Rue's hospital.
49
Understand Dr. Cynn has started an organization called Juk-kuk-Dan(積極團) or Positive Association whose objects are (1) Spiritual cultivation, (2) Hygenic improvement, (3) Betterment of manners and custom, (4) Purification of ideas. Cynn is the President of the organization.
50
Five Principles which stand for the articles of creed of the new organization are: (1) Belief in the God as revealed in nature, history, Jesus and experience. (2) Belief in the fact that it is the first principle of man to be one with God to fight against evil to make it surrender to good. (30 Belief that in all matters of priviledge, of duty and of action, men and women are perfectly equal and that where nobody's (interests or rights) are infringed on, we are altogether free (to do) as we please. (4) Belief that the Society should be constructed on the desire of serving mankind rather than on individual acquisitiveness. (5) Belief that the Society ought to guarantee to us the enjoyment of economic, cultural and spiritual ascendancy and security.
51
Cynn has ceen ambitious to have a faction of his own to boss over all these years. How far he will succeed in this new scheme remains to be seen.

16. 11월 16일

63
16th. Thursday.

64
Seoul home. In Seoul alone, the Korean Society is divided into factions, groups, parties who hate, suspect, bite and kick each other, whom no common principle or ideal may unite into one. Add to this the divisions and quarrels between Presbyterians and Methodists between the Western and Southern elements in the same denominations and even in the same congregations―as witness the Sung Dong Church and the Central Methodist Church. The causes of these unseemly and utterly un-Christian attitudes and sentiments are after all very trivial. What a pity that man like Cynn, with his strength of will and ability, seems more intently create a personal following for personal advantages than to abolish or at least to reduce, the causes of quarrel to the minimum. What a pity that persons fighting against their personal opponents for personal reasons justify or glorify their quarrels as fights against evil. No wonder nations fighting like cats and dogs for sordid ends claim, everyone of them, that they are fighting for justice, humanity and peace of the world!

17. 11월 17일

66
17th. Friday. Cloud―Pretty p.m.

67
Seoul home. Interpreted Bishop Kern's talk to the Pai Wha Girls 11:30 a.m. Then lunch at the Ladies' Home.

18. 11월 18일

69

70
Seoul home.

19. 11월 19일

72
19th. Sunday. Bright.

73
Seoul home. This morning Mr. Miwa (三輪) called and asked me if it were true that somebody or a group of somebodies are starting a Home Rule Movement or agitation. Told him I had no information on the matter. I told him further that I didn't know what type of Home Rule(自治) these men want and that in these times when Japan is engaged in a life-death struggle to get ready for a great world war that may break out any moment it would be wise for the Koreans to keep quiet.

20. 11월 20일

75
20th. Monday. Too mild for the season.

76
Seoul home. A vigorous shower between 11 and 12 morning. Sun and cloud p.m.

21. 11월 21일

78
21st. Tuesday.

79
Seoul home. The Central Council of the Korean Metodist Church met at the C.L.S. Board Room from 9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. A torrential shower with strong western gale between 12 and 1.
80
Miss Appenzeller or rather Miss Helen invited me to a lunch at the Ewha Ladies' Home. Was surprized to hear at the table Miss Helen say that she had been working on a plan for adding a women's medical department to the Ewha College; that she hadn't told Miss Appenzeller about her plans yet; and that she had invited Dr. Cynn and me to the lunch in order to disclose her plans to us three. No wonder Miss Appenzeller does not like to be a figurehead when Helen Kim who is nominally under her □.

22. 11월 22일

82
22nd. Wednesday. Pretty―Mild.

83
Seoul home. A bronze statue of Prince Ito is to be erected in Tokyo at the cost of 200,000.00 yen. The grateful Koreans are to be asked to subscribe to this fund as generously as possible to commemorate the memory of the statesman who erased Korea from the political map of the world. Let a Salvation Army man shout Haleluyah!
84
Koreans of all classes had the great honor of paying something like 300 thousand yen to build the Ito memorial temple, only completed last Spring. Now they are invited to have another chance of enjoying the honor of contributing toward erecting a statue in Tokyo.

23. 11월 23일

86
23rd. Thursday. Lovely. Spring-like.

87
Seoul home. This morning 澾善 the second son of cousin 致晠 caem to see in the garb of a monk. He left Seoul sometime last year saying that he wouldn't return until twelve years of prayer and contemplation under a distinguished Buddhist teacher in O-Tai San shall have been completed. I gave him ¥40.00 Now he is here in less than a year saying that he has become a monk having received the coveted mantle (伽裟) of rags from his teacher as his successor. He is going to 智理山 with a couple of devout young men to study and contemplate for 18 years at the end of which he is a warrior or a Buddha. He wants me to give him the fund to build a small house in the mountains where he and his companions can study without interruption.

24. 11월 24일

89
24th. Friday. Pale―Mild. Spring-like.

90
Seoul home.(達善 continued.) I told the boy that as there are thousands of rooms in the hundreds of Buddhist temples and shrines all over the country where recluses and anchorites can contemplate as much as they wish; and as I don't approve of such theories and practices, I wouldn't finance his project. Truth is that I don't believe much of his talks about his trances, dreams, and man-heaven(人天) theories.
91
4:30 p.m. went to Miss Appenzeller's home to attend a meeting of the Ewha board of directors. Messrs. 兪, 申, Mrs. 吳聖實 and Mrs. 崔活蘭 were present. Miss Appenzeller and two other American women present. Miss Helen Kim presented her plans for starting a medical department in the Ewha College. Her budget for 5 years begining from 1934 depended on ¥4,500.00 annual grant from the Women's B. of Missions and the sale of the East-Gate Hospital at ¥60,000.00. A very risky basis on which to build an expensive department. Cynn seemed to back Helen up in the scheme on the slogan: "If we start God will provide" Miss Appenzeller seemed rather annoyed constantly protesting that she couldn't be enthusiastic in furthering a plan that would jeopardize the other departments of the College which is already too overloaded and undernourished.

25. 11월 25일

93
25th. Saturday. Hazy a.m.

94
Seoul home.

26. 11월 26일

96
26th. Sunday. Beautiful.

97
Seoul home. (Miss Appenzeller and Helen Kim continued.) I am in hearty sympathy with Miss Appenzeller in this matter. "If we start God will provide" is a fine phrase to orate on but a shaky basis to build an expensive plant. It is this fine phrase abused and misused that has strewn the whole Korea mission field with dead and dying schools, hospitals and churches.
98
With such differences of opinion between Miss Appenzeller and Miss Helen Kim I wonder how they will get along together.

27. 11월 27일

100
27th. Monday.

101
Seoul home.

28. 11월 28일

103
28th. Tuesday. Pretty―A little colder.

104
Seoul home.

29. 11월 29일

106
29th. Wednesday. Cloudy.

107
Left Seoul 8:40 a.m. train for Song Do.
108
Arriving at home 10:30 was surprized to find the steelplate inner door of the safe neatly removed by some one. The puzzle grew all the greater when I found a few gold rings all safe and sound in the little drawer, while another drawer with a steel front remained undisturbed. Whose trick was this? So a safe is not safe in an empty room even in Korea.

30. 11월 30일

110
30th. Thursday. Pale―Mild.

111
Seoul home. From 7:30 to 9 p. m. a farewell meeting in honor of Bishop Kern and his wife was held at the 宗橋 Church. Though his visits to Korea have been far and few between during the last four years, he succeeded in winning the good will and confidence of all, Koreans and missionaries. He is a sincere Christian and a wise administrator.
