11
4th. Friday. Rain and wind. Cool.

12
Song Jun Beach. Tremendous rain and wind storm all last night―and all morning today. A few minutes of intermission about 2 p.m. then began afresh a tremendous down pour all the afternoon far into the night.
13
The camp of 50 tents which the Government R. Road Bureau had set up here was so swept by wind and drenched by rain that all the tent dwellers have gone bag and baggage.

15
5th. Saturday. Beautiful.

16
Song Jun Beach. The first beautiful day we have seen since we came here.
17
Allen came to see us this afternoon.
18
From papers we learn that the "typhoon" and rain of the 3rd and 4th have done an immense damage to property and lives along the South-Eastern coast of South Kyong Sang Do and the Kang Won Province. Had the rain and wind continued a day longer in their vehemence, our little colony here would have been in danger, too.

7th. Monday. Cloudy―Cool.

24
Song Jun Beach. Rough sea. A little after 2 p.m. had our pictures taken in our swimming suits. Candler swam out to a place whose depth was out of his reach. His head was barely out of the water. He tried to swim back to the shore but the waves rushing in, then recoiling back were too much for him.
25
He cried for help but there was nobody to brave the waves. Soon Sungi(白順城) was the only man in our crowed to do anything for him but his right arm had been in sling for the past week on account of an abscess on the back of his hand. Kwang Hyon(光鉉) could swim some but he was too timid to try and risk the depth. In this extremity our 璋善, now 13 years old, with two rubber buoys swam bravely against the waves and winds and reached Candler just in time to save him from succumbing to the waves beating furiously back and forth around him. Our Jang-Suni did it so quickly and nobly before anybody had time to caution him. Thank Lord for his mercies today!

Song Jun Beach. Rain last night. Calm and fair today. Left Song Jun per 2:13 p.m. train for Seoul with 璋善, Reached Seoul 9:30. Glad to see brother 致旺 back from Japan. He is to take his wife and baby with him to Kyoto a few days hence. Two servants. He is now 15 thousand yen in debt to the Tong-Il and the Han Sung Banks. How is he going to finance his expensive house keeping in Japan?

11th. Friday. Had a stuffy night. Rain all a.m.

37
Song Jun Beach. Reached An Pyon on schedule time amidst a hard rain. Arrived at Song Jun Station about 7:30 a.m. Clear afternoon.
38
Norman Angell, in his book, "The Great Illusion," attempts most sanely and most earnestly, to persuade his European readers―especially the Germans to quit wars and preparation for wars because they don't pay. It is the best book I have read on the subject.
39
Yet, it seems to me that while it doesn't pay when one higherly developed nation―like England―conquers another equally higherly developed nation like Germany, it does pay when one highly developed nation like Japan conquers a land whose rich resources lie untouched in the hands of a backward people.
40
(2) People, individuals as well as nations and races often fight, pay or no pay, for principles and interests which they rightly or wrongly consider to be of greater value than dollars and cents. Loyalty, patriotism, honor or even passion for revenge or retribution have been motives for wars.
41
(3) N. A's economic reasons were not sufficient to cool the war like passions of Europe. Only two years after the publication of the book, the Great War of 1914 broke out. Not only so, every nation is busy today preparing for another and greater war!!!

47
Song Jun Beach. Messrs. 兪億兼, 金俊玉, and 李春昊, paid me a visit this morning. They told me that the Song Do Higher Common School must be made a juridical person with a cash capital or investment of ¥200,000.00. The Song Doites have promised according to Kim Joon OK, to give ¥30,000.00 of which the 人參組合 or (Ginseng Association) will give ¥ 20,000.00 and the balance to be contributed by individuals. I told them I would give as much as the Song Doites will to have promised to, give viz: ¥30,000.00. The three young men wanted me to promise ¥50,000.00. But my finance will not permit it while my contribution will easily amounts to more than ¥50,000.00 if what I have already given to the school in the past is to be added to what I have promised. They hope to get something like 30 or 40 thousand dollars from America.
48
Candler tells me it is doubtful that the Ginseng Association will be allowed by the Monopoly Office to give that much to the school. The Association had to back out from a similar pledge to the Jung Wha Girls' School―which is favorably regarded by the Japanese. If so what prospect has a Christian School to get the donation from the Association.

Song Jun Beach.

53
15th. Tuesday. Rain on and off all day long.

54
Left Song Jun Station 7:47 a.m. train for On Jung Ri(溫井里) of the Outer-Diamond Mt.(外金剛) . Arriving at the Oi Kum Kang Station about 9:30, we met Mr. Yun Sung Nyol(尹聖烈) . Our party composed of wife, 璋, 琦, 珽, 恩姬, 寶姬, and 光鉉 drove to the inn in a taxi. Found the inn located very prettily right by the side of a beautiful rushing and roaring stream. Had a light breakfast of tea and toast. Our photo taken.
55
Mr. Yun Sung Nyol, who used to be a preacher in the North M.E. Church, had to stop his work on account of consumption. He came to the Outer Diamond Mt. when there was no railroad and no auto facilities 15 years or so ago. Thanks to the good air and water and his carefulness he got rid of his dangerous disease. For livelihood he started an inn on a very small scale. By his energy, shrewdness, by drawing foreign patrons more than Korean guests, he has made a fortune. He now owns large tracts of land which he bought for mere song, now evaluated at 5 to 50 or 60 yen per tsubo.
56
To 神溪寺 in an aouto. Rain all the way. Found the temple clean. The pagoda in front of the 大雄殿, said to be years old. Walked to 普光庵. Rain all the way. Wife did fine, though complaining all the while. Returned to the inn 3: 30 p.m. Hot spring bath. Returned to the Beach by 8: 08 train.

16. 8월 16일

58
16th. Wednesday. Fine. Rain all day. Cool.

59
Song Jun Beach.

17. 8월 17일

61
17th. Thursday. Rain on and off all the day. Cool.

62
Song Jun Beach. Too coo, and the sea too high for bathing.

18. 8월 18일

64
18th. Friday. Pretty―Cool.

65
Song Jun Beach. After lunch, we all went to the village of Chi-Koong(致弓) to see the diving girls (海女) dive for □□.
66
But the rough weather of the last few days having rendered the sea muddy, the divers had holidays. About 20 of them all from the island of Quilpart-some of them quite good looking. The village, though as dirty as Korean villages ought to be, it is somewhat a better off then most fishing villages.

19. 8월 19일

68
19th. Saturday. Rain―Cool.

69
Song Jun Beach. Fine rain―spray like―all the day long. After the nightfall a tremendous down-pour far into the night.
70
N. A's "Great Illusion", reveals the author to be a noble and Good man pleading for peace―because war doesn't pay today as it used to and that war doesn't settle anything. But I fear his readers in war-like Europe and equally war-like Japan, will pray to their respective gods or no-gods something like a Presbyterian woman who had some disputes with a Methodist woman prayed. She said in effect: "O Lord please change this woman's opinion as I can't change mine". Love of war is too deep an instinct in man and war has been so much glorified in poetry, painting, literature, and history in and by every nation―except in Korea―that wars and preparations for wars will not cease until no weak nation with appetizing morsel of land is left or until all the strong and ferocious nations kill each other off the earth by their terrible bombs, poison gases and what not. N. A. says human nature has changed. No indeed ! The human nature is today what it was tens of centuries ago. Only the methods and means which man uses to promote his self-interest have changed.

20. 8월 20일

72
20th. Sunday. Rain.

73
Song Jun Beach. Rain all last night―a tremendous down-pour between 2 and 4 a.m. Misty rain all day long.

21. 8월 21일

75
21st. Monday. Rain.

76
Song Jun Beach. Rain―small and big―all last night―misty rain this morning until 1 p.m. Cleared up in the afternoon. Our 文姬, 光鉉 and their little ones left by the 2:13 p.m. train for Seoul.
77
Mr. 呂運亨, on his way to Outer Diamond Mts. stopped off to see me. He said that Ok Kwan Bin(玉觀彬) who was assassinated in Shanghai a week or so ago, had been a marked man among his enemies for some years since Ok who made some money by making patent medicines and by swindling other people, refused to contribute to public causes. He wouldn't help even a worth student. He protected himself by winning the good graces of the Japanese.

22. 8월 22일

79
22nd. Tuesday. Beautiful. Pleasant.

80
Song Jun Beach. The 12 train brought Mr. Geroge Loer. We were glad to see him once more. He was a beautiful child when I saw in his father's home in Shanghai 1896. The picture of that family of that occasion-Mr. and Mrs. Loer, Allen, their elder son then about 7 years old-is as vivid as of yesterday. That George is now or must be a year or two over forty. He gave me some interesting information about Italy. No Italian is allowed to leave his country. When a prominent Fascist was asked what Fascism is, the answer was: "Fascism is what Mussolini is thinking at this moment".
81
Our friend left us for Seoul per 9:45 p.m. train.

23. 8월 23일

83
23rd. Wednesday. Cloudy. Sunshine late a.m.

84
Song Jun Beach. For the first time in many days had a good sea-bathing. Left Song Jun 2:15 p.m. train for Seoul where I arrived about 9:30.

24. 8월 24일

86
24th. Thursday. Beautiful.

87
Seoul home. Attended to little business in the morning. Left Seoul 4:18 p.m. for 議政府 Station. From with a few Y. people walked to 回龍庵 where the 6th Students' Summer Conference will have its annual meeting for a few days. Charmed by the beautiful stream running down the valley forming here and there lovely pools with clean white stones for seats. The little temple is comparatively clean. The meeting began about 8:30 p.m. I spoke on Ideal and Practice.
88
About 40 attendants―both girls and boys representing Christian schools. Went to bed about 11.

25. 8월 25일

90
25th. Friday. Cloud―Steamy.

91
About 1 in the morning I was awakened by 明燮 from Seoul, saying that Allen had telephoned from Song Do that mother is a critical condition and that I should come at once. The night too dark and the road too rocky to leave at once. Had to wait until 6 then we ran down the hill and walked to the station of 議政府 in 40 minutes. I left 明燮 at the station with injunction to go to 松田 by the morning train I had intended to go on, to bring our family to Seoul tomorrow. Then in a hired auto(¥700) I hurried to Seoul. Then by 8:40 train came to Song Do. Arriving at Allen's home 10:30 I was happy to see mother better so far so that she got up and welcomed me. Thank God.

26. 8월 26일

93
26th. Saturday. Rain.

94
Seoul home. Big rain from 2 p.m. all the afternoon far into the night.
95
Left Seoul Station 3:20 p.m. for 福溪 to meet wife and children on their way to Seoul from Song Jun Beach. So happy on both sides to meet on the train. Wife sick all the way from headache. Reached Seoul home 10 p.m. safe and sound. Thank the God of mercies for the comparatively good vacation we had.
96
Rain on this 1st Kap ja(秋上甲) day of the Autumn season means we shall have a few rainy Autumn.

27. 8월 27일

98
27th. Sunday. Rain until 10 a.m.

99
Seoul home. Attended the Long-farewell (永訣式) Ceremony in honor of Mr. Pak Sung Bong(朴勝鳳) at 8 a.m. He was one of the very few yangban Christians in Seoul. He belonged to one of the proudest yangban families in Korea. He was a strong man. But his record, as a promoter of the notorious Chang Moon Sa, was quite discreditable. Neither his yangban pride nor his Christian principle seemed able to make him honest in money matters―a fact which cost me 20 or 30 thousand yen.

28. 8월 28일

101
28th. Mondy. Steamy.

102
Seoul home. 璋善 and 琦善 left Seoul 8:40 a. m. train for Song Do to visit mother. The boys returned home 7:30 p.m. These two precious boys are very much attached to Paik Soon Sungi(白順成) who acted as a companion and a sort of physical director for the last vacation month at Song Jun Beach.

29. 8월 29일

104
29th. Tuesday. Steamy.

105
Left Seoul 8:40 a.m for Song Do with 恩姬, 明姬, 寶姬, 瑛姬, and 珽善 to see mother. Lunch at Allen's home. Mother quite well. Returned to Seoul with children, except 恩姬 by the 5:14 p.m. train.
106
Miss Nichols is rebuilding the Holstion Higher Common School, having pulled down the old building, at the cost of ¥30,000.00. Now, the old building, with all its defects, was finer and more substantial than any school building of the kind under the direct management of the Government General. To spend that much money for improving a school house which was good enough not only but even better than other schools or its kind and grade run by the Government itself is a folly that we can't understand. She is exacting money contributions from the parents of the girls which most of them can ill afford to give. These American women are great builders. They don't mind to pile up fine buildings but have no provision for adequate equipment and less for reserve funds for running the institution.

30. 8월 30일

108
30th. Wednesday. Steamy.

109
Seoul home. Steamy tempered now and then by vigorous showers.

31. 8월 31일

112
Seoul home A big shower between 7 and 8 a.m. Wife and our baby 珽善 left Seoul 8:40 a.m. train for Song Do.
