1st. Thursday. Lovely―Icy.

Seoul home.

Hear Mr. Yu Sung Joon died the day before yesterday. Well, one more old friend gone!
5
Today the Executive Chief(執政) of Manchukuo, Hon. Bu-i is promoted to the rank of the Emperor of Manchukuo. He was the last emperor of the Manchu Dynasty of China. After his abdication lived some years in Peking. Then was driven out by General Feng and sought and found a refuge in Dairen. By strange streaks of fortune he has become the first Emperor of Manchuria. Of course nobody knows how long he will occupy that position. But everybody thinks he will play an emperor as long as the Japanese authorities in Manchuria think wise to keep up the show. It is significant that none of the three Korean papers pay any attention to the great event: only a passing mention of the coronation of the new emperor.
6
But why can't the Japanese establish an empire in Manchuria, as the Mongols and Manchus did in China proper? The Mikado of Japan has as much right to the Emperor of Manchuria as King George has to be the Emperor of India. Wonderful people, the Japanese!

The Japanese Y.M.C.A. is campaigning for a subscription for ¥15,000.00 from its members to build a new Y. building. Up to the 27th, Feb. 28 members subscribed ¥5,754.00. Now are there equal number among the members of the Korean Y.(the Central Y.M.C.A.) who would have subscribed 1/5 of that sum if the Korean Y. had to be rebuilt? The Japanese Y. will get very substantial contributions from the Japanese firms and individual business men. During the last 31 years has any Korean business man given as much as ¥100.00 to the Central Y.?
14
The Central Y. is in a poor plight. Dr. Cynn is the General Secretary. But his stylish office is so far out of sight and he himself behaving so cold that hardly anybody goes to the Central Y. to see him. Hyon is the only popular man in the building and does most of the work but Cynn doesn't give him even an office of his own. Cynn seems to be inclined to use Hyon as a valet rather than a Vice General Secretary(副總務) .

4th. Sunday. Bright. Icy.

17
Seoul home. Last evening and night fall of snow quite heavy for Seoul at this season of the year. At least 3 inch thick.

5. 3월 5일

5th. Monday. Cloudy―Icy cold.

Left Seoul 7 a.m. by the Hikari Express for Song Do where I arrived 8:30. Attended the Graduating Exercises of the Song Do H.C. School from 11 to 12:30. Lunch provided by the school for a few of the important men who had come to the function. Returning to our home about 2 p.m. rested until 4:30. Then returned to Seoul per 5:14 p.m. train reaching Seoul about 7:45.
21
Kim Hong Sik's second wife and he came to see me. She is a classmate of our 文姬 which fact opened my heart at once to her(Mrs. Kim) . She seems to be a nice girl. For four full years she travelled to and from Seoul every day with nearly 30 other Song Do girls. They had to get up at 3:30 in the morning in winters. She says now very few Song Do girls go to Seoul for the higher School education, the Holston H.C. School for girls being able to supply that education.

23
6th. Tuesday. Bright―Icy.

24
Seoul home. Wife and I took our 珽善 to Dr. Mishima, the dentist. Then we took lunch at the Mitskoshi Dept. Store. When I go to a Department Store with wife I have to calculate the distance between her and me to a nicety. I must be near enough to be in sight lest she might complain I am indefferent to her; but I must be far enough from her so she may not be too free with my pocket book.

7th. Wednesday. Bright―Icy.

27
Seoul home.
28
11 a.m. went to the Government General Office(總督府) to see Mr. Ikeda(池田淸) the Director of the Police Dept. to ask him to grant the permit to the Song Do Higher Common School for solicite subscriptions for its endowment. He said he would look into the matter as soon as the petition comes to his office.

30
8th. Thursday.

31
Seoul home. 6:30 p.m. went to the reception given by Dr. O. Kang Sun in honor of Dr. Smith of the Presbyterian(South) Board of Missions. He is 75 years old but is exceedingly well preserved. He said that even now he doesn't know what it is to be tired. He seemed to enjoy the Korean good.
32
The Central Y. gave a farewell supper to Mr. Buner at 5 p.m. at the Bright Moon Restaurant. Was sorry to see him go. He is bright but nervous young man.

9. 3월 9일

34
9th. Friday. Bright―Icy.

35
Seoul home.
36
Went to Dr. Clark's home 4:30 p.m. where a reception was given in honor of Dr. Smith. On the car returning to Jong No(鐘路) I had a ride with Miss Helen Kim. She told me that money to the amount of ¥130,000.00 has come from America to build dormitories. Certainly the Americans are a great people to do such generous things when they are still struggling with a financial depression that America has never before experienced. I only wish they had given some such amount for the endowment fund. The Koreans will have good excuse for not going any money to Ewha College Fund.

10. 3월 10일

38
10th. Saturday. Beautiful.

39
Seoul home. At 2 p.m. I gave a commencement address to the graduating class of the C.C.C. The chapel was packed. I gave three advices: (1) Don't worship science over much. Many foolish and wicked things have been done in the name of religion; but the deification of science has brought to humanity such curses as unemployment, posison gas, destructive machines of death. (2) Don't let theories override facts or actualities. Theoretically the faithful prayers of devout man may remove mountains but actually nobody has ever done so. Hence don't sacrifice spirit for letter. (3) Have a higher standard of a hero than we Koreans usually have. A here must be a man of integrity. Confucius says a nation can get alone without soldiers and food; but no man can stand without integrity.

11. 3월 11일

41
11th. Sunday. Gloomy most of the day.

42
Left Seoul with 琦善 and 珽善 for On Yang 8 a.m. Mr. 李龍漢 accompanied us. Arriving at the Hot Springs about 11 a.m. we had a good bath. 12:30 we went to On-Yang-Up to pay our respect to our father's grave. Returning to the Springs about 1:15 p.m. rested until 3:30 in the On Yang Kwan inn. Left the Springs by 3:40 p.m. train for Chun-An Station where we boarded the 4:17 train for Seoul. Rain began on the road. Our little 珽善 behaves beautifully when out with us, though in the house he plays a petted baby around his fond mother.

12. 3월 12일

44
12th. Monday. Rain.

45
Seoul home. Rain all last night and all this morning. Rain cleared in the afternoon.
46
The Friends' Association(後援會) met at Miss Appenzeller's parlor 2 p.m. Decided (1) to send notices or rather to call on those who had kindly promised contributions asking them to pay what they had pledged to give; (2) and to organize a parent association or 學父兄會 for the purpose of getting annual subscriptions from parents in the shapes of stated membership fees. Thus money, money, always money and everywhere money―not that money is everywhere plenty but that money is needed everywhere as it is scarce everywhere.

13. 3월 13일

48
13th. Tuesday. Gloomy―Icy.

49
Seoul home. Snow between 7 and 11 p.m.
50
The other day I met Kang Jin Soo(姜振秀) in the office of Mr. Ikeda. Before Mr. Ikeda came in Kang told me that there is a strong current of opinion in Japan favoring certain type of home rule in Korea. Kang suggested starting a movement on the Korean side demanding home-rule. In my humble opinion there are two very serious obstacles to such a movement on the part of the Koreans. (1) Most of the Koreans who think at all about these things are opposed to home-rule or Ja-chi holding that we ought to demand an out-sought independence and nothing less than entire independence. (2) The Japanese who admits no Korean in the Cabinet of the Governor General; only 5% in the rank of Joo-Im; 41% in the Pan-Im rank; making only 9% Koreans in the Central Office or(總督官房) ; employing only about 35% Koreans in the offices throughout the entire country paying them only 21% of the fat sum given out as salaries and wages will the Japanese who show such discriminations in their political patronage, give a home rule to the Koreans?

14th. Wednesday. Bright―Icy cold.

53
Seoul home. Icy wind all day long.
54
The Annual Conference of the Central Conference of the Korean Methodist Church began its sessions from 9 a.m. this morning.

15. 3월 15일

56
15th. Thursday. Bright―Icy cold.

57
Seoul home.
58
Thses icy cold days with north-west gales laden with frosty and piercing chilliness―this unusual weather is not only directly unpleasant, but indirectly dangerous as people in the city are suffering from grips of various kinds and degrees.
59
Our 璋善 who had to get up at 3 a.m. every morning for five successive days to prepare lessons for examinations, is having a cold.
60
The Seoul Methodist people gave a reception to the delegates of the Annual Conference at the Central Y. between 4~6 p.m.

16. 3월 16일

62
16th. Friday. Sun―Cloud―Icy.

63
Seoul home. This morning I asked our 琦善 who is going to graduate from the Normal Primary School this month who in his class is most liked by the boys. In his modest way he said:
64
"They like me best. When I say anything they listen and they are all willing to lend me anything that I sometimes have to borrow". God beless this precious boy.
65
11 a.m. attended the Conference. Mr. 柳瑩基 of the Education Bureau of the General Board(總理院敎育局) in the course of report said that a missionary objecting to his translating certain English book into Korean had remarked: "In ten years, the Korean language

Seoul home. (柳's report continued) will be used only in kitchens. What's use of spending money in putting a book in Korean?" Understand that the missionary in question was Dr. Hardie. I can hardly believe it or if Dr. Hardie had said that, the circumstances under which such a remark was made should be taken into consideration. No same man of ordinary intelligence, especially a missionary of 40 years or more standing would have said such a thing to a Korean.
69
Some 25 years ago I heard a Japanese military officer say with undisguised joy that in ten years there wouldn't be any Korean in Korea but a few scattered remnants in some obscure corners of Siberia. He estimated the Korean population at 8 millions then and he expected or prophesied that 1 million a year would be killed off or expelled(under the benevolent regime of Japan) . Sometimes prophets turn out to be mere asses and it may be hoped that the military officer and the missionary in question will only add two more to the donkeydom.

18. 3월 18일

71
18th. Sunday. Gloomy. Windy.

72
Seoul home. Worshipped at the Jung Dong Methodist Church. Four young men were ordained preachers. One of them, Sim Myong Sup, is one whom nobody would have expected to turn a preacher. God bless him abundantly.

19. 3월 19일

74
19th. Monday. Bright. Milder.

75
Seoul home.
76
The other day a brother from Manchuria said on the Conference floor, a great door and effectual is opened in that big country to Christianity among the Koreans. They want to have churches and preachers wherever Koreans live in any considerable number. I believe there is no other organization or force in Korea, that can help the Korean emigrants in Mauchuria as well as the Christian Church. The brother made one very unwise remark however. He said "We must hurry up to keep the Presbyterians from occupying the great field". The feelings of rivalry between Methodists and Presbyterians in Korea are real and serious. Methodists say that the Presbyterians keep no agreements in regard to territorial divisions. The Presbyterians reproach the Methodists as being too rationalistic―almost heretical in the loose interpretation of the Bible etc.

20. 3월 20일

78
20th. Tuesday. Cloudy. Mild.

79
Seoul home. Snow began about 11 in the night.
80
About 40 persons gave a welcome supper in honor of 宋基周 who, during his 7 years' study in America, perfected a Korean typewriter. The machine turned out by the Underwood. Typewriter factory is a beauty. But the great pity is that there will be no demand for a Korean typewriter in Korea.

21. 3월 21일

82
21st. Wednesday. Pale sun. Very cold.

83
Seoul home. Snow last night nearly an inch on the ground. A wintry day.
84
From 10 to 12 morning the first meeting of the Board of Managers of the 槿花學園 Juridical Person(財團法人理事會) was held at Miss Kim Melissa's home. Messrs. 李仁, 金容圭, 獨孤熙, besides myself. Mr. Yi did the lion's share of work in making out the necessary documents concerning the transfer of the property of the Kun Wha School to the Sai Dan Ho Jin of the new Kun Wha Sil-up Hak Won(槿花實業學園) . Miss Kim is a remarkable woman―deaf and ignorant as she is she has done a work that nobody in Seoul could have done.

22. 3월 22일

86
22nd. Thursday. Cloudy a.m. Sun. p.m.

87
Seoul home. From 9:10 a.m to 12:50 our 琦善 stood the entrance examination of the First Higher Common School. Two periods for the Japanese language and two periods for arithmetic―one period being only 15 minutes. 726 boys from all over Korea are struggling to get into this school but only 210 or thereabout will be admitted. 琦善 thinks he has done today's work satisfactorily but we have to wait and see.
88
Mr. 尹鶴淳's little boy began to suffer from diarhea two days ago. He had to take him to the Severance Hospital about 9 yesterday morning. He went to the hospital about 9 last night and found that the doctor hasn't examined the child even and hasn't given a single dose of medicine! The enraged father transfered the boy to the Government Hospital.

23. 3월 23일

90
23rd. Friday. Pale. Mild.

91
Seoul home. From 9:10 to 10:10 this morning 琦善 stood another hour of examination in arithmetic.
92
About 11 Mr. 崔麟 called. The object of his call was to find out whether I would be willing to accept a position in the Central Council(中樞院) which the Government Genl. is seriously thinking to reorganize by appointing such Koreans who may be regarded as reflecting the real sentiment of the Korean people etc. I told him that one gets into the Central Council either for pay or for work; that men like him and myself who do not care for the pay of honor of it and who know they can do no sort of work, will not consider it worthwhile to go into the Council just to be reviled by the Korean populace. Seeing that the Korean has to choose between the Japanese regime and the Russian Bolshevism I for one prefers the former to the latter. Hence men like me wouldn't do anything in the way of opposing the Japanese regime. Then let us just alone.

24. 3월 24일

94
24th. Saturday. Pale sun. Mild.

95
Seoul home. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 208 boys who passed the written examinations had to stand oral and physical examinations. Our 琦善 being one of the successful boys had to stand the oral and physical examinations. The result will be published day after tomorrow.
96
About 9 p.m. Mr. 朴榮喆 called and repeated that Mr. 崔麟 said to me yesterday. I told him plainly that I would like to remain a free man.

25. 3월 25일

98
25th. Sunday. Bright―Mild.

99
Seoul home. 9 a.m. attended the "Long farewell service"(永訣式) in honor of Hon. Kwon Joong Huon(權重顯) at the front of the Dong-A Il Po Office. I remember him best as the secretary of the Independence Club, before it became an opposition movement.
100
Miss 任永信 and her brother, Dr. 任泰熙 asked permission from wife and me to take Grace to the Palace Zoo. I took 璋善, 珽善, and 寶姬, 瑛姬 to the same place. Purposely I stayed away from the party in order to give the Im's party full chance to chat with our lovely Grace. Pretty and graceful as Grace is, she needs to have a husband as generous and forebearing almost as an old father. She is such a spoiled child.

26. 3월 26일

102
26th. Monday. Sun. Mild.

103
Seoul home. Went to the 第一高普 to see our Ki-Sun's name among the boys who had successfully passed the gauntlet of written and oral examinations and who are hence to be admitted to the school. Ki-Sun tells me that one of the teachers of the Higher Common School told him the other day that he(Ki-Sun) and a boy from a country school had sent in the best papers in the written examinations.
104
Our Ki-Sun graduates today with honor from the 師範附屬普通學校. God bless him and his school mates!
105
6 to 9 p.m. a welcome supper party at 天香園 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. 崔承萬 for over 10 years the General Secretary of the Korean Y. in Tokyo. Over 50 persons came to the supper.

27. 3월 27일

107
27th. Tuesday. Pale―Chilly.

108
Left Seoul 11:23 a.m. for Song Do with 璋善, 琦善, 珽善, 寶姬, 瑛姬, for a few days of holiday trip. Arrived Song Do home about 2 p.m. All well there, thank God.

28. 3월 28일

110
28th. Wednesday. Bright. Pleasant.

111
Song Do home. About 9 a.m. our 珽善 complaining of an acute pain in the stomach, I had to take him to Dr. Huh, who, after examination, assured me that there was nothing serious. A pill seemed to have eased the pain. On you way home I suggested that we call on Young Hie(□熙) cousin 致旿's second daughter. 珽善 refused to do so giving his reason that our visit might make her worry to prepare food for our entertainment. After luncheon at Allen's home, we, 珽善, 瑛姬, 鼎求 and I, had a pleasant walk along the new auto road round the old palace around, Man Wol Tai.

29. 3월 29일

113
29th. Thursday. Beautiful. Real cold.

114
Song Do home. Our children seem to enjoy the clean air and mountain clibming―especially 璋善 and 琦善.
115
Had a long and pleasant outing with little ones along the new auto roads.
116
I am paying ¥10.00 per month to 朴妃奉 just to look after our trees on the hills. I have been here these three days yet I haven't seen this precious lazy fellow either in the house nor on the hills. It's sickening how these school educated young fellows shirk work yet want pay.

30. 3월 30일

118
30th. Friday. Beautiful. Very cold.

119
So cold that the pond is frozen in the morning. Left Song Do with children 5:14 p.m. train which was nearly 15 minutes late. Arrived Seoul 8. Several army officials in the same car with us. One of them drank cold sake bottle after bottle; then he carried a big bottleful of sake up and down the car asking or rather forcing other(civilian) passengers to drink cup after cup. He behaved altogether disagreeably but the conductor dared not interfere.

31. 3월 31일

121
31st. Saturday. Beautiful. Cold.

122
Seoul home.
123
Mr. Kim Tai Woo(金大羽) a Korean Secretary of the Central Council(中樞院) called and in the name of the Director of the Interior Bureau(內務局長) and asked me to enter the Council etc., etc., etc. I had to repeat what I had said to Messrs. Choi Rin and Pak Yung Chul, as to my reasons for not accepting the kind offer.
124
Kim told me that my entering the Council in some capacity would give a definite direction to the youth of the land who are wandering in their attitude toward the Japanese regime―co-operation or sulky resignation.
