1. 8월 1일

2
lst. Wednesday. Rain―rain―rain―Cool.

3
Left Seoul 8:40 train for Song Do, with 璋, 珽, 埼, 寶. The train didn't leave until 9:05. The great flood in South Korea has deranged the R.R. time schedule considerably.
4
The Nak Dong River is to Korea what the Yellow River is to China―only on a small scale. The Japanese authorities, in order to satisfy the land-hunger of a few great capitalists(of Japan, of course) , tempered with the course of the river by making arbitrary chanels etc., but nature got even with them this time. Whatever benefits there were in the creation of millions of tsubos of rice fields, were reaped by a few rich Japanese, while Korean farmers and villages are hardest hit by the overflow of the outraged river.
5
Yesterday Hyon told me that for more than ten days H.C. and P.I.D. had been closeted in C's room from 9 or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. refusing to see any caller. Everybody wonders what they could be doing behind a locked door all by themselves day after day. Certainly I admire the magnificient courage(cheek) of this strange couple.
6
The Central Y. has become simply a tool of C's dictatorial ambition and pleasure―its staff of young men merely his "soldiers" to do his errands. Barnhart is C's slave in all appearance.

2. 8월 2일

8
2nd. Thursday. Fine rain now and then.

9
Left Song Do with 珽善 for Seoul 5:14 p.m. train. Welcome sunshine on the way. Arrived at home 8. All well at home. Thank God.

3. 8월 3일

11
3rd. Friday. Cloudy.

12
Seoul home. Showers at intervals.
13
A writer tells us that "the Jains walk only on bare ground that they may not harm plant or animal's life; do not eat potatoes, beets, carrots, peanuts; drink no water except what has been boiled; use no artificial light "and that" Jains may not engage in occupations that endanger life, such as farming; they are usually merchants, lawyers, bankers". Compare with this extreme or excessive regard for life, that extreme or excessive disregard for life as is seen among the Europeans―especially in people like the brutal and beastlike Russians, who are busy inventing and manufacturing chemicals and machines for destroying human lives not on battle fields alone but in cities of non-combatants. The extremes of the East and of the West find the common sense medium in the teachings of Christ and of Confucius. It is interesting and instructive to know that the people of the smaller nations of Northern Europe―where heavy and expensive armament is unnecessary, enjoy the fruits of Christian civilization more than the so called great nations.

4. 8월 4일

15
4th. Saturday. Rain again at intervals.

16
Seoul home. No rain afternoon.
17
Went to Station 9:10 p.m. to bid farewell to General Iwasha, the former Commander of Gendarmerie in Korea going to Manchukuo to be the Commander of Gendarmerie in that country as well as to be the Director of the Japanese Police Bureaux in the Embassy. He is a good man.

5. 8월 5일

19
5th. Sunday. No rain―Pale sun now and then.

20
Seoul home.
21
Spent part of the day in Chui-Woon Jung with 珽善 and 珽姬.
22
Look at that poor jade of skin-and-bone, trying to pull a cart over laden with stone up that hilly grade. Sheer exhaustion compels the pitiful animal to stand still, looking appealingly to the brute of a driver. It makes one's heart sick to see that fellow―said to have been created in the image of God!―shower cruel blows on the dumb suffering beast to make it move. You ask the man―(Yes man has invented all the fine phrases of religion and philosophy) ―not to be so cruel to a helpless animal. The man―the lord of creation―indignantly tells you you have no right to beat or even kill his own horse. Oh how I wish I had the power to take the stick from him and give him some of the blows he is giving to the poor horse! Then hear that woman scolding, scolding, scolding day and night those who sweat to serve her, never saying one kind word in 365 days for all the good offices people do her! Why couldn't God make man kind?

6. 8월 6일

24
6th. Monday. Fair. Very Hot.

25
Seoul home. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. spent the day with 珽善, 瑛姬, and 泰嬋 among the pine trees on our Chui-Woon Jung property. The children liked the changes.

7. 8월 7일

27
7th. Tuesday. Sun―Very hot.

28
Seoul home. Pak Jang Soon(朴璋享) called this morning. He asked me to lend him ¥3,000.00. to help start a dry good store. I had to tell him I could not afford to comply with his request as I have so many obligations to fulfil. He is very clever but I can't approve of the way he treated his American wife, whom he had divorced.
29
He showed me four diamond rings each of which is worth over a thousand dollars, U.S. gold. He offered to give these rings as security for the loan. Of course I am too stupid to distinguish a real diamond from a glass bead.

8. 8월 8일

31
8th. Wednesday. Awful hot―steamy.

32
Seoul home.
33
Mr. Song Jin Woo invited Messrs. Cynn, Yuh Woon Hyung, to a Korean supper at Myong Wol Kwan to meet Dr. Namae(生江) and Mr. who are engaged in an anti-morphine organization especially for the Koreans. They said that there are at least 3,000 Koreans to be rescued from that deadly poison. They are conducting a sanitorium for the opium poisoned sufferers. Of course that work needs fund and they have come here to get subscriptions from Koreans and Japanese who are in sympathy with the good work.

9. 8월 9일

35
9th. Thursday. Rain more or less all day.

36
Seoul home. The Chang Moon Sa Press(a Den of Thieves from its start) has come to the end of its wretched life. There are three proposals for its disposition. (1) Kim Hyon Do(金顯道) , the business Manager of the firm wants to buy it out at ¥16,000.00. But as he has no money to pay the price in cash he is ruled out. (2) Koo Ja Hyuk(具滋赫) wants to take over the business and run it as his private concern without being interfered with by directors etc., who know nothing about such a matter. He asks me to lend him ¥5,000.00. (3) Hyon Dong Wan of Central Y. and Hong Pyung Sun want to buy the press at ¥16,000.00. Their idea is to sell the land at ¥4,500 per tsubo making say, ¥3,825.00(85 tsubo ¥45.00) ; to use the best of the printing press and types in the Y.M.C.A. printing department and to sell the rest of the materials at leisure thus paying back the sum to be borrowed from the Y. Zai Dan for the purchase.
37
I am puzzled which proposal to favor.
38
Cynn is strong for Hyon's suggestion because he hates Koo Ja Hyuk, who is certainly a Jew in the bad sense.

10. 8월 10일

40
10th. Friday. Rain.

41
Seoul home. Left Seoul 11:23 a.m. train for Song Do arriving there about 12 p.m. All well. Tremendous rain from about 5 p.m. to midnight.

11. 8월 11일

43
11th. Saturday. Rain from 11 a.m.

44
Had a refreshing bath in the gushing stream above the 暢幽坮 first time in five years. Returned to Seoul by 5:14 p.m. train with 恩, 明, 寶, 瑛. leaving 璋, 埼, for further rest in our lovely mountain home. Arrived Seoul home a little after 8 p.m.

12. 8월 12일

46
12th. Sunday. Clear a.m. Shower 9.

47
Seoul home. This morning I had an interview with the No Ik Hyong(盧益亨) who is regarded as one of the shrewdest merchants in the city. He is also deeply interested in the final disposition of Chang Moon Sa. He said he would vote for Hyon's proposal because that will settle the trouble-some "stock company" for good. If Koo, the usurer and sharper, gets hold of the Company to do as he please, he might give a deal of trouble to share holders.
48
Spent the afternoon at Bu Am Jung with 普, 瑛, 珽 and 亮媛(Laura's daughter) . They enjoyed the beautiful place and the air.

13. 8월 13일

50
13th. Monday. Cool. Rain all p.m.

51
Seoul home.
52
Hyon called this noon I gave him following warnings: "You are assuming a great responsibility when you propose to purchase the Chang Moon Sa property at ¥16,000.00 for the Y. Industrial Dept. Borrowing this sum from the Y. Zai Dan, you must have some reasonable assurance that you can pay it back in, say five years. In order to do so you must have the absolute management of the new work for at least five years. But as you know the usual tricks of Cynn, he will let you have the work as long as it is difficult but he will put one of his favorites in your place or over you when the job has some money in it, Don't trust Hong P.S. in matters of the sort. With all his likeable traits he is no business man, He doesn't know how to calculate the possible consequences of a bargain. Cynn is, as usual, making Hong to manipulate the purchasing scheme, C. being most anxious to get rid of his respon-sibility as the holder of 280 shares, Suppose you succeed in buy-ing out the risky Chang Moon Sa. If things go wrong he will not hesitate to shove the blame on your shoulders and possible one mine too."

14. 8월 14일

54
14th. Tuesday. Cool―Rain.

55
Seoul home. Rain all through last night and is continuing steadily this morning. Rain all day long. Positively cold in the evening.

15. 8월 15일

57
15th. Wednesday. Cloudy.

58
Seoul home. No rain except one shower at 9 a.m. and a heavy rainfall 6~7 p.m.
59
Mr. Choi Nam Sun, the author of the "Declaration of Independence". so called, of the Mansei Movement of 1919, for which he served a term of three years in Seoul Prison, was once almost idolized by young men. Some years ago he, in preference to a call from the C.C.C., accepted a position in the Historical Reserch Section of the Privy Council(中樞院) . He was dropped like a poison by those Koreans old and young, who pride themselves as partiots. Choi recently broadcasted a brochure entilled(神ナガラノ昔ヲ憶フ) attempting to prove the common divine origin of the Korean and the Japanese. The Japanese is building a ten thousand Yen house for him!

16. 8월 16일

61
16th. Thursday. Hot. Steamy.

62
Seoul home. At the request of Miss Helen Kim I entertained Capt. Swinehart at a Korean supper at the Myong wol Kwan Restaurant 6:30~9. Present Miss Appenzeller, Miss Helen Kim and Mr. Yu Ok Kyum. Captain Swinehart who has been giving himself to the const-ruction of the Ewha College building for the last several months is a typical American, in the best sense. He is optimistic, ener-getic, resourceful, courageous and Christian. He was told by the President of the U. of So. Cal. that the buildings the Captain is now putting up at 600,000.00 couldn't be put up in Cal. for less than4,000,000.00 or 7 times as much money as here. Captain S. said Ma Jong Yu, the Korea contractor has given work to be surpassed no where in the world. I enjoyed the evening.

17. 8월 17일

64
17th. Friday. No rain. Sunny afternoon. Hot and steamy.

65
Seoul home.
66
Went to the Government-General's official residence at Ryong San 5 p.m. to a reception given by the new Commander-in-Chief, the Army of Korea, Genl. Uyeda. There was an immense crowd of guests. The Genl. seemed a little more sociable mannered than his predecessor.
67
In a tram-car, in Seoul, there are 40 ad. frames. I notice only one Korean firm ad. and that is a patent medicine company at that. Among the names mentioned in business, official. social even sports, activities in Seoul and other cities of Korea―among all the names mentioned day in and day out, in the columns of the Seoul Press, one hardly meets with a Korean mentioned. All this shows the Korean's position in the business, official, social and even sporting circles of Korea is simply―nil.

18. 8월 18일

69
18th. Saturday. Fair. Hot.

70
Seoul home. Family went to the Bu Am Jung for a few days of cool rest. The long season of rain this year while it has worked havoc in many places, has been good to the trees and streams outside of the North Gate(彰義門) . The absence of the hateful pine-calears this year is a boon.

19. 8월 19일

72
19th. Sunday. Beautiful.

73
Had a better rest last night than I feared. Returning to Seoul home about 10:30 a.m. had a refreshing hot bath. Left Seoul 11:23 a.m. train for Song Do reaching Allen's home about 2 p.m. Mother well and children gone outside of the East Gate to a stream for picnic. They returned home about 6:30 p.m. So happy to see 璋善 and 璋善 sun tanned and seemingly robust. God grant they have had a refreshing and recuperative holidays so that they may begin the new term of the school thoroughly fit in body and mind. This morning as I was descending the hill inside(city side) of the Chang Ui Moon, I was surprized to meet Genl. Ukaki, the Gov. Genl. going up the hill with his coat off with a company of young women. I like him all the better because he doesn't put on so much air, on these occasions.

20. 8월 20일

75
20th. Monday. Cloudy.

76
With 璋善, 埼善 and 益民, left Song Do for Seoul per 1:51 p.m. train arriving at Seoul home 3 p.m. Went to Bu Am Jung with the boys about 6 p.m.

21. 8월 21일

78
21st. Tuesday. Sun and cloud. Hot―Steamy.

79
Seoul home.
80
Vigorous showers after midnight last night.
81
Left Bu Am Jung with 埼善 about 1 p.m. Went to Dr. Mishina to have the boy's front teeth treated. Returned to Bu Am Jung about 5 p.m.
82
Only about 70 years ago the major portion of Italy was in the Austrian bondage, while the two Sicilies were under an alien ruler. Today Austria, dismembered and enfeebled, is looking up to Italy for protection for bare independence!

22. 8월 22일

84
22nd Wednesday. Cloudy. Heaty―Steamy.

85
Seoul home. Came to the city home with 璋善, 埼善, and 益民. 璋善 had high temperature all last night. Had to take him to Dr. Pak Kye Yang. 埼善 has to go to Dr. Mishina again.
86
Returned to Bu Am Jung 4 p.m. A vigorous shower lasting about ten minutes as I reached the North Gate.

23. 8월 23일

88
23rd. Thursday. Rain. Rain. Rain!

89
Seoul home.
90
Came to the city home from Bu Am Jung 10:30 a.m. Found the boys well.
91
Under the caption "Does Germany Mean War?". a writer in the Fortnightly Review has a sentence which runs as follows: "The young men who in other days would have had their military training to start them off in their career, were demoralized by unemployment and turned to Communism and civil war-fare". Now, put "official" in place of "warfare" and you have the picture of the educated young men of Korea.

24. 8월 24일

93
24th. Friday. Cloud and Sun.

94
Returned to the city home in the morning. Mailed ¥50.00 more to 吳元根 now in the Wha-Buk(華北) . Theological Seminary in Shan-tong Province.
95
Hyon told me this afternoon that Cynn is urging Hong Pyong Sun to decide at once Yes or No in his attitude, as a member of the Juk-Kuk Band, toward by Cynn and his Bandits. Hong is between the devil of Cynn's despotic pressure to join in the plot and the deep of a troubled conscience which doesn't approve of the plot.
96
Returned to Bu Am Jung for supper.

25. 8월 25일

98
25th. Saturday. Cloudy and Steamy.

99
Bu Am Jung.
100
Cynn's plot is to oust Ryang from the office of Genl. Superintendent. His first scheme was to have himself elected for that office. Finding he couldn't do that, the constitution limitting the eligibility to that office to clerical members only, he is plotting, to place Mr. Kim Jong Woo, in the office he himself to be the power behind the throne. so far as I am concerned, I see nobody in the whole Korean Methodist Church who can fill that high office as well as Ryang. But of course I don't object to Kim's election if the Church so desires. However I am definitely opposed to any plot or scheme that will make Cynn or any other schemer the boss of the whole church just for his own personal will make the Korean Methodist Church what he has made of the Central Y.M.C.A. namely a tool to promote his interest and personal prestige.

26. 8월 26일

102
26th. Sunday. Sun p.m.

103
Seoul home. Went to Chemulpo with 璋, 埼, 寶 and 益民 by 7:55 train. The children enjoyed the sea bathing and swimming hugely. Returned to Seoul home by 3:55 p.m. train. I and 寶姬 went out Bu Am Jung for the night.

27. 8월 27일

105
27th. Monday. Beautiful.

106
Bu Am Jung―until 6 p.m. Returned to the city home with family in the afternoon.
107
Mr. Huh Hun(許憲) called this morning to ask me to lend him ¥500.00 at least to help him start working a very promising gold mine in Yung Hung. Some how or other I have liked this man for many years past since he lost his job as a lawyer, he has been living from hand to mouth. His step daughter has proved a worthless burden to him. He is now turning to mining operations or mining speculations. I hope he will succeed.
108
Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Jun Pil Soon(車士百) came to Bu Am Jung to see me just to ask me lend her ¥8,000.00 to run the Kyung Sung Poyuk Won(京城保育院) . This school for kindergarten teachers, after Pak Hui Do, the former Principal was ousted, was taken over by Esther Whang and her two sisters on the condition that they would finance it. They assured the Managers that a Kim Juk Sik or somebody had promised to give 30,000 Yen. But it now seems evident that the three sisters simply lied―according to Mrs. Jun. I had to tell her that I can't afford to help her to that extent.

28. 8월 28일

110
28th. Tuesday. Rain. Rain until 5 p.m.

111
Seoul home. 4 p.m. attended the wedding of Pyon Yung No to Miss Ryang of Song Do.

29. 8월 29일

113
29th. Wednesday. Cloudy.

114
Seoul home. Misty rain in the morning and noon.
115
Hyon tells me that Dr. Kim Yung Hui(金永羲) has incurred the displeasure of Helen Kim for obeying the orders of Miss Appenzeller. Helen Kim brought Kim from Song Do to the Ewha College a year ago without consulting Miss Appenzeller and paid his salary out of the building fund―rather a high handed procedure which cut the feelings of Miss Appenzeller to the quick. Now what's wrong about Kim's obeying the orders of the President of the College? If Hyon is correct, Helen Kim is trying to play the role of Cynn in Ewha College.
116
Hyon confided to me that his position in the Central Y. is becoming so unpleasant that he had talked with his relatives about his seeking another employment. He has been demoted from being the Vice-Genl. Secretary, and driven from the position to another in the Y. Wherever dirty work has to be done―in the education section, then in the Industrial Department, he was detailed to put things right. When that's done he is shifted to another section. Now he has so reorganized things in the Industrial Dept. that the wages of the workers have been paid promptly for the last 12 months. Because Hyon refuses to join the Juk Kuk Band, Cynn puts Barnhart and Jung Sung Chai on the nefarious job of worrying and insulting Hyon.

30. 8월 30일

118
30th. Thursday. Bright. p.m.

119
Seoul home.

31. 8월 31일

121
31st. Friday. Beautiful.

122
Seoul home.
123
This afternoon, Mr. Yu Uk Kyum called and said that, while he approved of the proposal of Cynn to buy the Chang Moon Sa Press for the Central Y., he(Yu) is dead against doing so by borrowing money from the Y. endowment fund. He said that such an act would violate the spirit and letter of the Zaidan rules.
124
Cynn who is one of the Committee of three to hunt for a purchaser of the Press, should have reported the result of his search before the 14th this month on which he left Seoul for Wonsan. When he returned to Seoul on the 19th, he again put it off from day to day saying he could make a more provable bargain when Chang Moon Sa is in its last extemity of distress. He is a conscienceless, pitiless and financially dishonest politician. I would hate to see him have control of the Chang Moon Sa Press, in case the Y. should buy it.
