Seoul home. 9 a.m. went to the North-Palace to see the official celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the Japanese regime in Korea. The program contained 3 distinct events. 1. The official inauguration of the Jubilee Ceremony, which was solemnized by addresses of the Government General; of the representatives of the Premier, the Foreign Minister; of Vis-count Saito etc. The Russian Consul general spokes on behalf of the Consular body. Han Sang Ryong read a congratulatory address as representing the Korean people. 2. Rewards given to persons who have well served the State or Society. 3. Memorial service with Shinto rituals for those who died in the service of the Government General.

2nd. Wednesday. Rain from early a.m. to 5 p.m.

Seoul home. The Silver Jubilee is rightly an occasion of rejoicing to the Japanese. But to the Koreans it is an occasion of humiliation. While the Japanese papers are full of eulogies on the wonderful achievements the Japanese regime have accomplished during the 25 years, the Korean owned papers―the Tong-A-Il-Po, the Chosun-Il-Po and the Joong-Ang-Il-Po, are simply silent―giving no statistics nor even reporting any details in the series of celebrations.

While this sulky silence on the part of the Koreans is perfectly natural and even commendable, we Koreans must make the most facilities which have been introduced in education, in industry, in agriculture. We must learn from our friends their efficiency, their discipline, their ability to combine and stay combined for common interests. 7:30 to Myong Wol Kwan where the distinguished guests were entertained.

Left Seoul 8 a.m. for Song Do arriving there about 10. Attended the 29th Anniversary Celebration of the Song Do Higher Common School. Was amused to see no audience except a few elderly men.

Lunch at Candler's home. Returned to Seoul by 2:52 p.m. train. Stopped off at Shin Chon Station to see our dear Grace in the Ewha Dormitory. She was well. Washington, 璋善 had just come to see her too.

Seoul home. This morning's papers report that the Italo Ethiopian war has actually begun and that the Italian troops have already captured the town of Aduwa, where the Ethiopians annihilated an Italian army 40 years ago.

Fears are entertained by some Koreans that this Italo-Ethiopian conflict may develop into a Second World-War and that Japan taking this opportunity may open a campaign in Northern China or in Eastern Siberia.

Left to herself alone it is a foregone conclusion that Ethiopia will be quickly subjugated, as she has no means of resisting the perfectly mechanized forces of Italy. In the world of today no unprepared race will be allowed to play a dog in the manger over a rich country.

Seoul home. Our 寶姬 and 瑛姬's school made out an elaborate program for the Annual Field Day Games. But rain from 9 a.m. to 10:30 compelled the school authorities to postpone the exercises. From 11 a.m. on we had a lovely day but the ground was so soaked and in some places so flooded that nothing in the way of outdoor exercises could be done.

6 p.m. about 40 young men, many of whom were indebted to Mr. Usami for their education and for official jobs, and others who, like myself, have personal friendship for him, gave him a welcome supper at Myong Wol kwan 10:20 p.m. to the Station to see Vis-count leave Seoul. Mr. Sekiya left for Manchuria 10:50.

Seoul home. From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. whole family except mother went to the Normal Girls' Primary School to see our 寶姬 and 瑛姬and their schoolmates enjoying the Field Day excercises. This being the last Autumnal Field Day Meets that our 寶姬 will have in this school I felt all the more solicitous to see her go through the long program.

Allen tells me the following story: Cousin No. 4 has two "secretaries". For their benefit cousin No. bought 200 "tok"s of salted white shrimp(새우젓) @￥2.30 per "tok". He distributed them among his plantation supervisers(舍音) with orders to sell the salted shrimp @100 "kun" of unhulled rice per tok. Now the rice @7 sen per "kun"would fetch ￥7.00 per "tok"! In case the article couldn't be sold or bastered by whole "tok" it should be retailed @ one "mal" of unhulled rice for one "sabal" of the shrimp! This cousin is building a church and pays a Bible woman his share to teach religion to the villagers.

Seoul home. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. attended the Field Day exercises in the First H.C. School where Washington and Lambuth are receiving their Middle School education.

We had rain more or less just the day before the Field Days in all the schools where our children are studying so that the ground were soft and dustless.

Seoul home. This morning cousin No. 1 brought the notorious vagabond Jung An Rip(鄭安立) to see me just to ask me to give him(Jung) ￥3,000.00 that he might go to Japan to see the leading lights in Tokyo. For what? To ask them or the Japanese Government to lend him one hundred million yen at 3% interest per annum to be paid back in 25 years. This money to be used in establishing a technical university and numerous factories so that Koreans can produce everything they need thus enabling them to drive out Japanese goods from the Korean market!

Seoul home. Had a chat with Mr. Barnett from Shanghai Y.M.C.A. He is a graduate of Emory Ga. and then of Vanderbilt. He has been in the Chinese Y.M.C.A. work for 25 years. He is a fine looking specimen of American Y. secretaries. 6:30 p.m. entertained Mr. and Mrs. Barnett to a Korean supper. Present: Mr. and Mrs. Barnhart, Messrs. Koo, Paik Nak Joon, Dr. Oh K.S., Hyon D.W. and Hellen Kim.

Seoul home. Kwang Hyoni invited Messrs. Yum Chang Sup(廉昌燮) , Jang Ung Jin(張應鎭) and Paik In Jey to supper at his home. Kim Tai Woo didn't come though invited. As I told 光鉉 to entertain these men, I paid the bill. Mr. Yum, the Vice-Director of the Social Work Bureau is one of the nicest Koreans in official position.

Our 璋善 and his classmates left Seoul 11 night train for Diamond Mts. God give them a safe and instructive trip.

Seoul home. A Korean paper tries to give an account of the original cause of the Italo-Ethiopian conflict. Of course the immediate cause may be a matter a few decades back; but the real and fundamental cause of the conflict began something like 500 thousand or a million or so years ago when man was first created with his "human" nature implanted in his mean heart.

Seoul home. 3 p.m. to the Station to bid farewell to Mr. Usami. While he is, in politics, a Japanese of the Japanese toward Korea, and the Koreans, he has shown during the last 20 years a consistent and constant friend of the Korean students and others who sought his help and counsel. He is a Samurai of the old type. His friendship lasts.

Returning to the Y. from the Station had a long chat with Hyon. I believe with him that Koo Ja Ok is surrounded with enemies in the Central Y. Of the members of the staff 4 are Cynnites while 2 only are Koo's friends. The bother is that while the Cynnites are as active as vipers, Koo friends. Whang Yung Soo and Kim Ung Chip are as harmless as dead doves.

Seoul home. With 寶姬, 瑛姬, and 珽善 went to By Am Jung outside of the Chang Ui Moon about 10 a.m. Arriving there I went to sleep at once and didn't wake until 1. I feel very tired whenever I get into pure country atmosphere after having breathed the foul stuffy air of a crowded city for months. So happy to see the dear little children enjoy the clean air and beautiful scenery. Returned home 5:30 p.m.

Wife left Seoul 10:20 train for Song Do home. 6~9 p.m. about 70 men from various Christian institutions gave a Korean supper party in honor of Dr. Temple, the General Secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society in London. He made himself pleasant to everybody by easy and courteous manners and by taking a hearty meal inspite of the fact that this was the first Korean dinner he had ever taken.

Hyon tells me that the Tokyo Y. people criticized Dr. Ryang bitterly for not paying them a visit while in that city lately.

At her request had an interview with Dr. Helen Kim 8 a.m. She said that the men members of the Ewha Faculty are or have been disgruntled because they are not given any voice in the inner council of the College. Kim Sang Yong, the only male teacher who has been lately made the head of the Literary Dept. has had a quarrel with Yi Kui Bok who is rather conceited and quick tempered. Yi I as been for many years past the office secretary of the School. He happens to be the husband of Helen K's niece. Kim In Yung, one of Cynn's right hand men with a Kim who used to be Dr. Noble's secretary, try to launch a campaign against Helen Kim by attacking Yi K.B. I advised Helen Kim to persuade Yi to appologize to Kim Sang Yong.

Left Seoul with 珽善 per 12:50 train for Song Do. Arriving there a little past 2 we straight to the Central Hall where Miss Paik Yun Ok, the 2nd daughter of Paik Woon Sang was wedded to Kim □□. The ceremony over, wife and I with 珽善 went to our home.

A vigorous shower about 5 p.m. but soon stopped. The few maples trees on our own land are simply beautiful. I don't need to go to Diamond Mts. to enjoy the maple glories.

Left Song Do with 珽善 9:30 a.m. in a buss for Paik Chun Hot Springs. We enjoyed the ride which took about one hour to reach the Springs. Had a good bath. It's a joy to me see our baby, 珽善 enjoy the auto rides.

At 2 p.m. the wedding ceremony of Mr. Kim Chang Jay(金昶濟) and Miss Jun Tai Jin(全泰鎭) , was celebrated. I presided over the little service. We, I and baby, returned to Song Do by 5p.m. buss.

Song Do home. Wife, 珽善 and I left Song Do for Seoul 2:52. Arriving at the station we were made happy by our precious children meeting us.

Left Seoul 8 a.m. train for song Do to attend a meeting of the Song Do H.C.S. Board of Managers called to meet Dr. Cram who is paying us a flying visit, We agreed on a draft of the Constitution or charter for the Zai Dan Ho Jin for the Song Do H.C.S. to be submitted to the Board of Missions in Nashiville for approval.

The Song Do Church members gave a lunch in honor of Dr. Cram in a Chinese restaurant. I was also invited. 5:30 p.m. Principal Kim invited Dr. Cram and me to meet some of the leading citizens of Song Do who have taken interest in the school at a supper in Chun-Il-Kwan Restaurant. I returned to Seoul by 8:04 night train.

Dr. Ryang and I have decided to send out a few copies of type-written letters to some of our friends, explaining our attitude toward the Positive Faith League. The letter was originally drafted near two months ago by Dr. R. It has been corrected by me and Dr. Underwood. Even now I wouldn't care to send it out, but for the shameful trick which the Positive Leaguers have played with the Christian Messenger.

Three men have been digging a well for me on one of our house sites for the past 29 days. They have dug 39 ft. This morning we drew 40 large buckets of water from the well. The question is shall we stop here or dig further or deeper for more water. Had the city authorities given us city water main―there are now more than 100 householders in the Chooi Woon Valley―I wouldn't have thought it necessary to go to expenses of digging a well so high up.

6:30 p.m. went to the Seoul Stadium to see the boxing Matches between Suh Jung Kon and a Spaniard(a Philippino) . There was an immense crowd. Suh beat the Spaniard.

Seoul home. A few old Southern Methodist preachers and laymen entertained Dr. Cram to a Korean supper at Myong Wol Kwan. It's remarkable that he has retained his wonderful command of the Korean language after so many years' absence from Korea.

Seoul home. The Korean Athletic Association has prepared a rather ambitious program of assorted games―field and track, baseball, football. basketball, tennis and jujuits matches―to run for five days, from today. Sixteen years ago this would not have been possible to say the least.

Seoul home. Our mother's 92nd birthday. Had family reunion lunch 12:30 with a few guests. Invited to supper Misses Appenzeller, Young, Helen Kim, Messrs. Kim Yung Huie, Yi Kui Bok, Kim Sang Yong.

Hear Mr. Yun Taik Yung, the father of queen Yun passed away in Peking. He would have lived and dead a rich man-as a rich man goes in Korea-but for his inordinate lust for more money. His hangers-on-taking advantage of his passion for gain, enticed him into all sorts of speculations-in real estate in attempting to produce ground units on a large scale etc. etc. etc. He was tempted to borrow money from banks and individuals at heavy rates of interest year after year until his debts ran up to millions. He had to run away from his creditors and lived in Peking for the last ten or more years. His death is no loss to any body except to his creditors.

The Italian troops haven't found it a walk-over affair in Ethiopia. The Emperor Selassie of Ethiopia seems to be brave and wise man. He and his son have placed themselves at the head of their army to fight the Italian invaders. The Ethiopian solders are almost unarmed and barefooted. What a refreshing and respectable contrast―this admirable attitude of the Ethiopian Emperor to the shameful conduct of the Kings of the Yi Dynasty who never once led an army against an invader.

Brother Chi Chang tells me that Mr.Kim Duk Soo, who had been the principal of the Kwang Sung Higher Common School for more than 15 years, fell in love with a missionary doctor in the Union Christian Hospital to the extent that he resigned his position, and sold his house to follow the American girl to Peking. I can hardly believe the story and I shall not believe it until I hear it confirmed by Mrs. Ryang, Kim's own sister.

Seoul home. Captain Swinehart who has gone to Ameriac to raise fund for the Ewha endowment says in a letter to me. "I realize how difficult it will be to interest capital for the expansion of th Ewha project, until we can report a larger investment in the enterprize by reasonable for the American to say:" O, why don't you Koreans give tens of thousand yen when the Americans have given you hundreds of thousand dollars?" But the Korean is just as reasonable to say: "We are poor to begin with. Those of us who give have to help the institutions which private Koreans are struggling hard to carry on. There are scores of enterprises which deserve our support yet which we are unable to help. You who build the Ewha College at the cost ￥800,000.00 must have money enough to run it without our help". A man who builds a ￥100,000.00 house must not ask his friends to lend him ￥10.00 for rice.

A man intoxicated with power loses his selfcontrol like a man intoxicated with alcohol. He does things which no man in his good senses would so. What a power-drunkard Napoleon was when he invaded Russia! He should have devoted his wonderful sagacity and power in giving peace and prosperity to France and then to Europe. The Kaizer found himself the greatest monarch in Europe in 1914. Germany was powerful and prosperous. Had he devoted a small portion of the treasure and men he sacrificed to his fool ambition in developing the resources of his African possessions and in colonizing them what a mighty empire Germany would have been by this time. I think Japan ought to let the great wall be the southern boundary of Manchuko and help the Nan King Government as a sincere friend for the establishment of a stable government.
