1. 3월 1일

2
1st. Friday. Pretty.

3
Seoul home. The Hebrew prophets―like Amos etc. are hard reading. Their books so full of denunciations and harsh and cruel, curving words―much of them so vulgar―all put into the mouth of the Almighty God. I don't believe Jehovah would have said such things in such ways. Christ and his apostles denounced sins but in gentler words. Confucius and Mencius denounced sins but never used such undignified figured language which the Jewich prophets used in the name of Jehovah.

2. 3월 2일

5
2nd. Saturday. Cloudy. Chilly.

6
Seoul home. Rain from 6 to 8 p.m. This is the third rain in Seoul.
7
The Executive Committee of the N.C. of Korean Y's met at 3 p.m. to consider the problems of the Tokyo Korean Y. and to take action on Cynn's resignation. As to the first it was moved and carried to give permission to the Tokyo Korean Y. to pawn the telephone to pay off the pressing debt of ¥60000 and also to send Mr. Barnhart in time to meet Dr. Mott and Mr. H. in Tokyo to get their approval for selling about 100 tsubo of the vacant land behind the Tokyo Y. building to wipe off its debt and to invest the balance for an endowment.
8
In regard to Cynn's resignation it was decided to lay it on table until the Committee of Fifteen meets in full session at Dr. Mott's invitation.

3. 3월 3일

10
3rd. Sunday. Beautiful a.m.

11
Seoul home. Cloudy p.m. Snow flakes and a little rain from about 2:30 to 4.
12
Last evening from 5:30 to 9 the Board of Directors on the Central Y. met at the Tai Wha Kwan Restaurant. All the routine items in the agenda went through smoothly. The meeting had to be resumed in the General Secretary's room at the Central Y. to shun the noise of the Restaurant. Dr. Oh presented a re-constructed budget in order to provide Koo's salary. He discovered a deficit of ¥1,76000 in the trickish budget of Cynn. Dr. Oh proposed to meet this deficit by dismissing Hong Pyung Duk and woman secretary, by cutting the Y. magazine expense to ¥30000 and by raising the receipt from Membership fees to ¥50000 over and above Cynn's estimate―all these put together giving ¥1,73000. Then the tug of war began between the Cynnites and the anti-Cynnites. The former all objected to dismissing Hong P.D. as was expected. Finally we appointed Yi Jung Jin and Pak Yong Hui―two Cynnites―to prepare a budget that will come out even. With 5 clever and united and unscrupulous Cynnites on the Board―with Dr. B. on the fence always―with Barnhart and Wilbur pulling together on Cynn's side, I can't see how Koo can manage the work at all.

4. 3월 4일

14
4th. Monday. Pale sun and cold.

15
Seoul home. The winter seems to have come back to make up its shortage. Icy wind and snow flakes between 11 and 12. Lunch at 趙主事 ‘s home this being the 60th anniversary of his birthday.
16
Attended the wedding of Mr. Yi Myong Won and Hong Esther 7:30 p.m.

5. 3월 5일

18
5th. Tuesday. Cloud and sun. Very chilly.

19
Seoul home. 10:30 a.m. wife, suhmo, 珽善 and I went to the Girls' Higher Common School to see our Grace play a piano-solo in the school musical exhibition. The program was long but I had to sit it through because Grace's solo was 18th item in the program.
20
7:30 p.m. wife, 明姬, 恩姬 and 珽善 went to the Central Y. to attend the congratulatory meeting held in honor of Miss Kim Melissa. Miss Pak In Duk presided. Usual speeches etc. etc. I didn't go in―too tired.

6. 3월 6일

22
6th. Wednesday. Beautiful. Icy.

23
Seoul home. Allen tells me that cousins No. 2 and No. 4 charge 1 1/2% interest on 1/2 of the cost of fertilizers distributed to their tenants, while Allen charges no interest on the same. Not only so, cousins make contract with the wholesale merchant early in spring but keep it secret and when the price per "kamani" rises say 50 sen above the contract price, they charge the tenants the risen cost and not the contract price. Last year Allen wanted to make contract with fertilizer merchants in spring at, say, ¥300 per bag. He asked cousin No. 2 to let him know when he(cousin) negotiated with the merchant cousin put it off from month to month pretending he waited for a lower price. Finally Allen had to buy his fertilizer 2,700 bags at ¥3.30 because he could wait no longer. he lost ¥81000. Later he discovered that cousin had made contract with the merchant early spring but kept it secret. I wish he put his religion more in business than in prayers.

7. 3월 7일

25
7th. Thursday. Gloomy. Very chilly.

26
Seoul home. I asked Cynn if he cared to have the Committee of Fifteen meet before the 20th inst. to act on his resignation. He insists on having it at the time of Dr. Mott's meeting―the end of this month―on the pretention that it would save the traveling expenses of the members who live outside of Seoul. He must have some scheme up in his sleeves―to gain the time. Barnhart and Kim In Yung, two of his "soldiers" have gone to Tokyo to meet Dr. Mott and Mr. Harmon. Cynn shows no sign of repentance inspite of the fact the Y.M.C.A. and the whole Christian community of Korea are suffering from the evil consequences of his positive Banditism.

8. 3월 8일

28
8th. Friday. Rain from 10:30 a.m.

29
Seoul home. Mr. Koo tells me that Pastor Pak Yong Hui and Mr. Yi Jung Jin met the other day with him as the Committee appointed by the Central Y. to reconsider the budget so as to make the Receipts and Expenditure balance. They had no new plan to present. They insisted that the Cynn's budget should be left alone as it had been passed before the new General Secretary(Koo) came. They strongly objected to dismissing Hong Pyong Duk. Pak went so far as to say that he had a revelation from God that Cynn's budget would work out all right. "we'll succeed if we do it(Ha myon toin-ta) ." Yi said if we believe, the budget will come out o.k. In case it closes the year with a deficit the chairman(Yun) being rich should make up the shortage. If he refuses to do so we shall make him to pay by pulling his testicle!!!

9. 3월 9일

31
9th. Saturday. Gloomy p.m.

32
Seoul home. The capture of Port Arthur alone is said to have cost General Nogi 50,000 brave young men. The human nature and the world being what they are, it's sheer nonsense to ask Japan to give up the rich Manchurian provinces to the maladministration of Chang Hsio-liang or to the demonish exploitations of Bolshevic Russia. I only hope that japan will devote her time and energy to the restoration of peace and security in the great Manchurian territories without seeking new quarrels, South of the Great Wall.

10. 3월 10일

34
10th. Sunday. Bright.

35
Seoul home. From 9:30 to 11 the army authorities celebrated the 30th anniversary of the great battle of Mukuden by staging a sham street fight around the Bell Square. An immense crowd to see the sight. May no real fight of the king ever visit any city or village of Korea. If there is a hell, those fellows who invented the deadly gases of modern warfare should be consigned thereto.
36
1 p.m. a banquet in Kyong Hoi Roo given by the army people in commemoration of the Japanese victory over the Russians on this day 30 years ago.

11. 3월 11일

38
11th. Monday. Lovely―Icy wind.

39
Seoul home. 2:50 p.m. Mr. Ahn Chang Ho arrived at the Seoul Station from Pyong Yang. A large crowd met him. Mr. Pak Hung Sik took Mr. Ahn and me in his care to the Choong Ang Hotel. His health seems to be none the worse for the long confinement he had.
40
7:30 p.m. the Central Y. Board of Directors met in the Social Room. The resignations of Hong Pyong Duk and of Jung Sung Chai were accepted. The later's resignation was a surprize. One of the reasons he gave for his resignation was a that the Directors by their actions showed themselves to be false(僞) , ugly(醜) , evil(惡) , and hating(憎惡) . His implication is that his boss, Cynn and his crowd are all men exemplifying the Christian virtues of truth(眞) , beauty(善) , goodness(善) , and love(愛) . Cynn's precepts and example on his young converts are simply damnable.

12. 3월 12일

42
12th. Tuesday. Gloomy. Very chilly.

43
Seoul home. 12 morning to 1:30 p.m. attended the annual Hak-ye-hoi(學藝會) staged in the Normal Girls' Primary School where our 寶姬 is in the 5th year grade and 瑛姬 in the 3rd year. The performance given by the first year girls―6 or 7 years old―was remarkably good. Wonderful how those little girls have learned a foreign language so well in so short a time as to act in theatrical exhibition.

13. 3월 13일

45
13th. Wednesday. Chilly to the bone.

46
seoul home. 9 a.m. went to the kwang Wha Moon Square to pay my farewell respect to the remains of Mr. Uh Yun Juk(魚允迪) .
47
About 11 had a chat with Barnhart who had just returned from Japan. He reported a comparatively feasible arrangement he had made with the Tokyo Korean Y.― people. He had satisfactory interviews with Dr. Mott and Mr. Harmon. Mott asked Barnhart if Cynn had done anything immoral. Barnhart answered No. Then had Cynn given up any of the great fundamentals of Christian religion?" "No!" answered Barnhart. Mott once more asked "has Cynn been divisive?" "Yes" answered B. "Well" said Mott, "then he can come back". Mr. Harmon favored Cynn's going to America. Barnhart asked me if I would join him and Wilbur in a telegram to Mr. H. recommending Cynn's trip to America, assuring him(Harmon) that we believe in the "sincerity and life purpose" of Cynn for the future. I gladly consented to do so.

14. 3월 14일

49
14th. Thursday. Bitterly chilly.

50
1 p.m. mother with wife, 文姬, 珽善 and me, went to the prefectural Office of Seoul where pieces of silk-cotten(英棉) from Her M. the Empress Dowager, were distributed to people above 90 years of age. Only about 7 old ladies present in person which a dozen others were represented by proxies.

15. 3월 15일

52
15th. Friday. Lovely―windy―Dusty.

53
Seoul home. 9 to 12―attended the Semi-Annual Meeting of the C.L.S. Trustees held in the Board Room of the C.L.S. Building.
54
3 p.m. the policy of the Christian Messenger was made a special order of the day. Its editor Pastor Jun Pil Soon, is a persona nongrata with the Presbyterian missionaries and the Pyong Yang people. I myself strongly object to the fact that Pastor Jun and Sim Myong Sup have made the Christian Messenger(基督申報) an official organ for Cynn's Positive Band and for the propagation of the Han Kul system of spelling. However I kept my mouth shut. The whole matter refered to the Christian Messenger Board of Managers.

16. 3월 16일

56
16th. Saturday. Sunny.

57
Seoul home. 10 a.m. mother, wife and I went to the Kun Wha Kindergarten to see our son, 珽善, "graduate". The little fellow made a fine speech.
58
Miss Kim Melissa has no business to keep up this kindergarten. Having no money she has only one teacher for near 30 children. Not a janitor to keep the room clean. She levies contributions from the parents in season and out of season. For the "graduation" exercises we had to pay ¥3000. Miss Kim is an able woman but too ambitious.

17. 3월 17일

60
17th. Sunday. Bright a.m. Gloomy p.m.

61
Seoul home. Worshipped at the Jong Kyo Church, with little 珽善. After the church we took a tram car ride to Chung Riang Ri over fine road that had been built between Seoul and the suburb.
62
It is reported that Germany has scrapped that part of the Versaille treaty Which imposed restrictions on her military status. So another treaty gone to the junk shop. Italy's armed attitude toward Ethiopia looks strangely like what other great powers have been in the habit of doing to weaker nations. Can anybody blame Japan in the light of these events?

18. 3월 18일

64
18th. Monday. Beautiful.

65
Seoul home. 6:30 p.m. to Myong Wol Kwan where a reception was given to Prof. Bergmann, of Sweden and his companion, Mr. Sjoquist, who have come to Korea to study its birds and insects. In my welcome remarks I mentioned what the late Dr. Nitobe had said regarding the fact that a prison in the city of Stockhorm was turned into a musium needing jail accommodations became so small. The professor smiled and said one prison was turned into a musium because it had become too small(!)

19. 3월 19일

67
19th. Tuesday. Gentle showery rain.

68
Seoul home. 2 p.m. attended the Commencement Exercises of the Bo-Sung College(寶性專門學校) held in the new building outside the East Gate. Kim Sung Soo, the president of the College is certainly a remarkable man. He has given nearly a million Yen During the last two decades to the Joong Ang Middle School and the College. He is collection a ¥500,00000 fund for the College. He has already succeeded in getting ¥270,00000 subscribed.

20. 3월 20일

70
20th. Wednesday. pretty a.m. Chilly p.m.

71
Seoul home. 7:30 the Society for Promoting Correct Spelling of Eurn Moon held a public meeting in the auditorium of Central Y., Messrs. Kim Myong Jin, Pak Sang Hui of Pyong Yang, and Pak Sung Bin gaveable talks criticizing the defects of the so-called Han-Kul system of spelling.

21. 3월 21일

73
21th. Thursday. Pretty.

74
Seoul home. 10 a.m. went to Yu Ui Do aviation ground to see the solemn ceremony of naming the scout plane constructed with the money donated by Moon Yung Ki. The military and offcial circles make much of the event to encourage other Koreans to emulate Moon.
75
3 p.m. to the station to see niece Jung Ja(貞梓) off for Kyoto. Dr. and Mrs. Cable left Seoul for America by the same train.
76
4 p.m. to the Chosen Hotel where a tea reception was given by Lieut. General Namba of Korea. I hate to attend these functions. The haughty manners of many Japanese who naturally exult in their monopolized positions of power and profit. the fawning attitude of some Koreans who can't disguise their inferiority complex, are both distasteful to me.

22. 3월 22일

78
22nd. Friday. Pretty.

79
Seoul home. Brother Chi Chang sold his lovely home―so pretty, so cosy, so nicely fixed up to build a nicer home he say. But as it will take 6 or 10 months to build a new house, his family is compelled to rent. The house which Dr. Cable and family have just vacated. The expense, the bother of moving to the rented house, the distance which he will have to negotiate every day between the city and the C.C.C. compound―I can't see why he should go to all this trouble for nothing.

23. 3월 23일

81
23rd. Saturday. Cloudy.

82
Seoul home. 9 a.m. went to the Jai Dong Primary School with our 珽善 who had to stand a sort of entrance examination. There were 220 applicants in boys' Department where only 120 are to be admitted While 122 girls came for examination of whom 70 or 80 to be admitted.
83
10 a.m. went to the Girls' Higher Common School where our 明姬 is one of the 92 graduating girls. God bless them!
84
6~9 p.m. wife and I entertained at Myong Wol Kwan the teacheres of the Normal Primary School for Girls where our Moon Hie, Eun Hie, and Myong Hie, graduated years ago and where our little Bo Hie and Yung Hie are still studying. Nine to the teachers, five men and four women seemed to enjoy the Korean supper.

24. 3월 24일

86
24th. Sunday. Lovely.

87
Seoul home. In the afternoon, called on Mr. Ahn Chang Ho at the Joong Ang Hotel so called. First time I found him alone. He refuted the charge that has been laid on him to the effect that he is a bitter anti-southern sectionalist. If his explanations are all true, it was Dr. Rhee Sung Man who broke with Ahn and not vice versa. Ahn is a good talker. He concluded by saying that he would rather die than to inflame the sectional animosties of the Korean people.

25. 3월 25일

89
25th. Monday. Lovely.

90
Seoul home. Went to Dr. Oh's house for lunch who celebrated the first anniversary of his grandson's birthday―the first son of Ui Kyong(義卿) the second daughter of cousin No. 2. Dr. Oh's wife is certainly one of the homeliest women I have ever seen in Korea. I admire and honor Dr, Oh who has had the goodness to have lived with such a wife without any break. They have two sons and two daughters―all of them fine men and fine women. God seems to have blessed Oh for his chivalous kindness to his homely wife.

26. 3월 26일

92
26th. Tuesday. Lovely.

93
Seoul home. 6 to 9 p.m. wife and I entertained at a Chinese restaurant, Bong Nai Kak, the teachers of the Girls Higher Common School where our Mary, Grace and Margaret graduated. Principal Takamoto is a fine specimen of his class.

27. 3월 27일

95
27th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

96
Seoul home. Went to Chui Woon Jung with 珽善 and 寶姬 after breakfast. Stayed there until 5 p.m.
97
When Hitler was asked what was his source of power, he is said to have pulled out a pocket New Testament from his pocket. It is a well known fact that the Confucian Analects was a favorite companion of Kato Kyomasa, one of the greatest fighters under Hideyoshi. The za-zen or the intense concentrative contemplation of a Buddhist sect has been successfully practiced by all great warriors of Japan in all generations.
98
Thus the teachings of the Prince of Peace; the precepts of Confucius whose whole life was spent in denouncing war; the doctrines of Buddha who wouldn't kill an ant―all are made to contribute their best to the making of men-slaughter!

28. 3월 28일

100
28th. Thursday. Cloudy a.m. Pale sun p.m.

101
Seoul home. 1:45 train to Ewha College where the Commencement Exercises were held in the Music Hall. Graduates: 9 in Music Dept; 10 in Literary Dept; 13 in Home Economics: 22 in Kindergarten School. Kim Kap Soonie, the lovely daughter of Mr. Kim Il Sun stood at the head of her class in Literary Dept. When I shook her hand, she couldn't suppress her emotions being apparently reminded of her father. God be good to her.
102
In an animated address, Mr. Yuh Woon Hyong told the girls not to be bound by the old ethical standard which makes a woman a slave to parents in childhood; a slave to husband when married; a slave to sons in old age. He played on the Chinese character(從) “obedience", which has the sound of "jong" the Korean word for slave. Don't go back to old notions. Smash up every and all ideas and customs. Rather a unwise advice to young girls.

29. 3월 29일

104
29th. Friday. Pale sun a.m.

105
Seoul home. The new buildings of Ewha College near the Shin Chon station are magnificent. I dare think in Japan proper itself no girls' school can boast such fine buildings. The greatest draw-back the new structures have at present―nay for some time to come―is the lack or rather absence of good water supply. For drinking purpose alone water carriers are employed to bring water from some distance. The idea of moving the whole school to a place with no water yet!

30. 3월 30일

107
30th. Saturday. Beautiful.

108
Seoul home. Left Seoul with Dr. Avison for Taijun to meet Dr. Mott 8:45 a.m. Our baby 珽善 went with us. Boarded the super-express from Fusan at Taijun. So glad to see Dr. Mott once more. He asked Dr. Avison and me about Cynn's affair. I told him that I only believed Cynn made a mistake in trying to introduce to the Korean society the free ways of social intercourse between the sexes in America, thus giving rise to all sorts of gossip about his relation with Pak In Duk. I didn't think Cynn had done anything worse than that in that matter. I emphatically denounced the Positive Band as unnecessary in its principles, Un-Christian in its objective, unwise in its methodology.

31. 3월 31일

110
31st. Sunday. Beautiful.

111
Seoul home. From 10:30 to 12:30 Dr. Mott had a conference with Dr. Avison, Dr. Cynn and me. Mott repeated his suggestion, which he made yesterday on the train, that Cynn should ask for a church trial to clear himself of the charges, against him, concerning P.I.D. We told Mott that such a step would hurt everybody and help none. Mott then suggested Cynn should make a frank statement about his Positive Band. reasserting his firm belief in the great Creeds of the Churches.
112
Finally I had to tell that the Positive Band scandal can't be rectified by mere verbal statements; that those who are suspected its leaders should by action prove that they are no longer its adherents. Cynn didn't show any sign of repentance, acknowledging the fact that he has been, unintentionally, the author of an organization that has produced a divisive effect and influence in the churches.
