1st. Monday. Beauiful.

Seoul home. 10 to 12. The Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Ewha College. Of the 15 members Messrs. Yu Ok Kyum, Henry Appenzeller and I whose terms expired were re-elected. Cynn was re-elected Chairman―which I heartily approved especially as Yu had a few days ago insisted I should consent to take that position. But Cynn's election was rushed through while Yu O.K.Helen Kim and I happened to be out of the room. Was it a prearranged trick again? If so, Cynn's usual intrigues are kept going unchecked. As the Japanese do the most ordinary thing artistically Cynn does the most ordinary thing intriguingly.

2. 6월 2일

5
2nd. Sunday. Beautiful.

Seoul home. Brother Chi Chang tells me that he had given, through Police ChiefSayeki, one thousand Yen to the Shi Joong Hoi. Surprized to hear that this same Chief has written a personal letter to Chi Chang to contribute another ¥1,00000 to the building of a Police Ju Do Hall! He seems as insatiable as hell.

Only a few weeks have passed since the Japanese Government promoted the Japanese Legation in China to Ambassy as a token of her strong friendship for the Middle Kingdom. But the Commanders of the Japanese garrisons in Tientsin and Kwan Dong are growling that Chian Kai Sek, the dictator of China is playing double faced game on Japan by encouraging and instigating anti-Japanese activities in North China and in Manchuria. I am afraid Japan is planning to spring a jump on Peking with the intention of placing the puppet Emperor of Manchu Kuo on his ancient throne. The "A No. I" reception which Japan gave to him in Tokyo a month ago, the promotion of the Manchurian Legation to Ambassy in Tokyo-all this seems to have been staged to be custom the Chinese mind to the dignity and prestige of Emperor Buie so as to make his restoration to Peking easier.

10
Seoul home.

4. 6월 4일

12
4th. Tuesday. Rain on and off all day.

13
Seoul home. Candler came this afternoon and showed me a letter from Sayeki, the Chief asking him to join the Shi Joong Hoi paying the membership fee of ¥1,000.00. The Chief further asked Candler to contribute ¥500.00 toward the building of a Ju-Do Hall for the Police.

5. 6월 5일

15
5th. Wednesday. Lovely.

16
Seoul home. Met Helen Kim this afternoon at the Central Y. with Mrs. Yu Kak Kyong. Treated them to ice cream at the Lily Garden. Helen Kim told me that Cynn's re-election as the Chairman of the Ewha Board of Trustees was so transparently trickish that she could hardly sleep the nights following the meeting. She said she was going to protest against the proceeding as illegal as the re-election was rushed through by Bishop Welch while eight out of 14 members present were out of the room.

6. 6월 6일

18
6th. Thursday. Pale sun. Cloud―Rain from 11:30 to 2 p.m.

19
Seoul home. Dr. Ryang tells me that Bishop Welch declined to preach in the Jong Kyo Church because he didn't want to be misunderstood to be lined up with Pastor Shin Kong Sook, one of the leaders of that "outrageous" thing against Cynn! Piecing together what Helen K. and Dr. Ryang have said, it is evident that Bishop Welch has been thoroughly inoculated with his venom. Besides I understand Bishop Welch is a sort of god-father of the Five Principles and 21 Articles of Cynn's Positive Band. No wonder the Bishop stands such a firm supporter of his favorite.

7. 6월 7일

21
7th. Friday. Cloudy. Cool. Lovely p.m.

22
Seoul home. Cousin Chi Yung's wife a remarkably inteligent woman, tells me that in 1931, on her way to America she was most hospitably entertained by Dr. Rhee. There she learned that Cynn had borrowed600.00 U.S. gold from Dr. Rhee on the pretense that he(Cynn) would leave Korea for good with his family to join Dr. Rhee. She then met Cynn in Los Angeles trying to buy an automobile to take home to Korea. Cynn never went to America to join Rhee and he never intended to. He simply lied to cheat money out of the trusting Doctor Cousin. heard later Cynn had returned only300.00 to Rhee.

8. 6월 8일

24
8th. Saturday. Lovely.

25
Seoul home. 2 p.m. attended the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Founding of the Pai Chai School. The program was not tediously long, but even in it I couldn't help seeing Cynn's trick in having Mr. Kim Sung Soo to speak where Dr. Oh Kung Sun should have been invited. Cynn bootlicks Kim because he is a richman.
26
6:30 p.m. attended the supper party given by Bishop and Mrs. Welch at the Gray House. The Korean guests were Dr. and Mrs. Ryang, Dr. and Mrs. Cynn, Dr. and Mrs. Jung Il Sa besides myself. A very pleasant evening.

9. 6월 9일

28
9th. Sunday. Pretty.

29
Seoul home. Attended the morning services in the Jong Kyo Church, where Bishop Welch preached.
30
Lunch at the Lily Garden with wife, Mrs. Ryang, Mrs. Hong (李恩卿) , Miss Kim Melissa. Our little ones, 寶姬, 瑛姬, 珽善 also came. After lunch we took a ride to the river―then had a boatride to the great delight of the three little children.

10. 6월 10일

32
10th. Monday. Cloudy a.m. Pretty p.m.

33
Seoul home. 10 a.m. went to Kuk-Whang Sa to pay my farewell respect to the remains of Mr. Ji Woon Yung, the strange man who believed the re-incarnation of Suh-san-Dai-Sa. He was a painter, a scholar, and a fine calligrapher―a rare conbination. But he was partly crazy. He lived to the age of 84, the night he died, he worked on some literary composition until 3 in the morning. Then he went to sleep as usual and at 6 a.m. he was found dead. I first saw him in our Sung Dong home about 58 years ago.
34
2 p.m. by appointment called on Bishop Welch at the Gray House. He desired to hear me about the Positive Band business. I would have to say everything I knew of Cynn's meanness if the Bishop had to be converted from his firm belief in Cynn's sincerity etc. But I had neither time nor intention to do so. Besides the Bishop is so full of pro-Cynn stories, explanations and prejudices that it would have been impossible to convert him. So I simply told him that Cynn made a great mistake in introducing a divisive element into the Church.
35
From 4:30 to 10 the annual meeting of the Korean Athletic Association at 淸凉館.

11. 6월 11일

37
11th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

38
Seoul home. With wife called on 6th cousin and his wife at their new home.

12. 6월 12일

40
12th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

41
Seoul home. Hear(Miss Kim Melissa tells me) that Miss Pak In Duk is trying to get a job in the Kun Wha Girls' Industrial School. She may be doing this either to get a new shingle to decoy some money out of her American patrons, or to seize the institution for Cynn's positive Band―or both. Whichever motive she may have, there can be no doubt that the subterranean Cynn is at the bottom of the trick. I once suggested to Miss Kim Mellissa to get Pak In Duk as her possible successor. But now I object to P.I.D's plans for anything because she is Cynn's mistress and lieutenant.

13. 6월 13일

43
13th. Thursday. Beautiful.

44
Seoul home 7:20 a.m. to the station to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Harmon of the International Y. Committee New York, Mr. and Mrs. Beaton of Montreal Canada, and Mr. and Mrs. Haworth of Phiadelphia Y.
45
12 morning, lunch at Mr. Barnhart's home where the American visitors were entertained. Dr. O.R. Avison and his son Godon Avison also present. After the lunch we had a general conversation on the economic situation of Korea. Beaton of Canada seemed to have some doubts as to the business honesty of the Japanese. he said that his wife's cousin who had dealings with Japanese merchants in lumber business had a devilish aim of it as the Japanese wouldn't keep the contracts.

14. 6월 14일

47
14th. Friday. Beautiful.

48
Seoul home. 8:30 the American visitors had a conference with the members of the Central Y. staff.
49
9:30 went to Chosen Hotel where a tea party was given by about 50 Koreans in honor of General Hayashi, the Minister of War who is returning to Tokyo from a visit to Manchuria. He seemed to be deeply interested in the expressions of the hopes and desires of some of the Koreans in regard to the treatment of Koreans in Manchuria. The General Left for Tokyo 3 p.m.
50
8 p.m. our Lambuth played piano in the 4th Musical contest(Inter-Middle School) promoted by the C.C.C. The public hall where the contest was held was full to its capacity. Our boy got the first prize in piano.

15. 6월 15일

52
15th. Saturday. Sun. Hot.

53
Seoul home.10~11 a.m. a talk with Mr. Harmon. He asked me if Cynn would regain his position in the society in time. I said he would if he would only stay quiet and keep his associates from saying or doing things that might hurt him. He asked what I thought of Barnhart. I told him Barnhart has done good work for us but that by following too unconditionally the lead of Cynn, Barnhart had some share of Cynn's unpopularity.
54
The American visitors left Seoul 3 p.m.

16. 6월 16일

56
16th. Sunday. Rain.

57
Seoul home. Rain from early morning all through the day far into the night.
58
Bishop Welch believes that Cynn is the cleverest man in Korea and that he is on that account, victimized by other Koreans who are jealous of him(!) Cynn has succeeded in convincing the good Bishop that Dr. Underwood is against Cynn because Cynn had once tried to make Belch the president of C.C.C.; that Yu Ok Kyum is against Cynn because Cynn hindered Yu in his scheme of annexing the Seminary to the C.C.C.; and that Dr. Oh K.S. is against Cynn because he was balked in his designs of annexing the East Gate Hospital to the Severance by Cynn. Cynn is now a dangerous character fully.

17. 6월 17일

60
17th. Monday. Misty rain all a.m.

61
Seoul home. 9:30~10. With Mr. Han Man Hie called on the Director of Education as representatives of the Parents' Association of Normal Primary School(for Koreans) to request him to do us the following favor: Some years ago the Parents' Association presented to the school a library. As the school is to be removed to the Normal School compound the Parents hope that the authorities will give them a building that may take the place of the library or else they would feel that they had thrown away some three thousand Yen. The Director said that he would see to the matter in making the budget for next year.

18. 6월 18일

63
18th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

64
Seoul home. 8 p.m. went to Paik Woon Jang(白雲莊) Restaurant, at the invitation of Mr. Iketa(池田) the Director of Police Dept. who entertained to a Japanese feast the Governor of the Oriental Development Co, one Mr. Takayama. Usual geshas' dancing. usual flow of sake. I took my leave quietly about 9:30.

19. 6월 19일

66
10th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

67
Seoul home. 1:30 p.m. with wife, Myong Hui, and Joseph, went to the new property we had bought for our Lambuth outside of Chang Wi Moon. We found the well very cold and the farm house very neatly kept by the former owner, Hub Sung Nyol. We had our picnic under the cool shades of per-simon trees and enjoyed our outing very much. Returned home 5 p.m.

21. 6월 21일

72
21st. Friday. Beautiful.

73
Seoul home. 12:30 lunch at the Station Buffet at the invitation of Mr. Jung In Kwa. Dr. Oh Kung Sun and Dr. Rynag also present. Jung is regarded as a leader in the Hung Sa Dan Party composed of the "Western" Koreans. As Cynn is known as a schemer in the Methodist Church, Jung goes as a champion schemer in the Presbyterian Church in Korea. So far my relation with Jung has been a rather amicable one. He suggested we meet together once or twice a month to promote sociable and co-operative relations between the Methodists and the Presbyterians.
74
3 p.m. attended the opening ceremony of a Boxing Hall built by Whang Ul Soo and to be conducted by him.

22. 6월 22일

76
22nd. Saturday. Sun a.m. Cloud p.m.

77
Seoul home. 1:30 with wife, Moon Hui, Mrs. Ryang, Miss Juhn, and Joseph, went to the garden party given by the Mistress of Chun Hiang Won(天香園主人) in celebration of the completion of a new restaurant in the beautiful valley of Jung Nung(貞陵川) . The woman Kim Ok Kyo is a remarkable character in her line of business. She must have, under her pretty looks and engaging manners a strong will and a lot of business sense.
78
Miss Pak In Duk was present. She is as chatty and pleasant as ever―though she must have a strong dislike for me― as strong as her love for Cynn is.

23. 6월 23일

80
23rd. Sunday. Cloudy―Cool.

81
Seoul home. A little sprinkling of rain between 7 and 8 a.m. Left Seoul 9 in the morning for Chemulpo with wife, Joseph for the hot sea-water bath. Returned home by 2:00 p.m. train.
82
6:30 p.m. to Myong Wol Kwan where the visiting boxers from the Philippine Islands were entertained by a number of Koreans who are interested in boxing and other sports.

24. 6월 24일

84
24th. Monday. Beautiful.

85
Seoul home. 4:30 p.m. Miss P.I.D.'s Rural Work Committee met at her office to hear her a nual report etc. Miss Appenzeller, Capt. Swinehart, Mr. Barnhart, Mr. Yuh Woon Hyong also present. Cynn didn't come until we were ready to leave the room. Very significant. Nearly an hour later I saw Cynn and P.I.D. sitting in the West Gate bound tram car. Cynn's absolute cheekiness coupled with his untiring plottings makes him a dangerous man.
86
From 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. the Boxing Match between the Philippino boxers(5) and Korean boxers was staged in the Seoul Stadium. An immense crowd. The Korean boxers beat the visitors 4 to 1.

25. 6월 25일

88
25th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

89
Seoul home. Went to Chemulpo 9:00 a.m. train for a sea water bath. Returned by 12:20 train.
90
This Chemulpo which I found in 1883 nothing but an unattractive sea port with a couple of fishermen's hovels on a hill without any trees, has become in the hands of the Japanese a thriving town with beautiful reforested hills, lovely villa. The Korean quarters is still encumbered with thousands of unsightly and uncomfortable straw thatched huts apparently waiting to be swept away by Japanese in course of few years. This is a world where superiority drives out inferiority. No use whining.

26. 6월 26일

92
26th. Wednesday. Beautiful. Hot.

93
Seoul home. Shin-la is the only Korean dynasty that has left monuments of Korea's ancient civilization. But she committed two crimes against the Korean race. One was that she set the miserable example of borrowing military aid from China to crush out her rivals. This precedence was followed by the degenerate Wang and Yi dynasties to the extent that asked help from China to quell even peasant uprisings. The other crime is that Shin-la by unifying the whole peninsula under one autocracy naturally killed out all spirit of healthy competition and above all the spirit of fight which the division of the country into three states had kept alive.
94
Shin-la's relation with Tang, one of the most brilliant dynasties of China, was close enough to learn some of the arts and industries of the Middle Kingdom but too close to have killed the native initiatives. On the other hand the Wangs and Yis were so unfortunately tied to two of the worst dynasties of China, that of Won and Ming, that all native spirit of independence and of culture were almost eradicated.

27. 6월 27일

Seoul home.

28. 6월 28일

99
28th. Friday. Rain.

Seoul home. The Doshisha University of Kyoto is the only Christian university of high standing in Japan. Sometime ago the military instructor proposed to install a miniature shrine dedicated to the Hachiman "god of bows and arrows" in the Ju Do Hall of the University. Of course the faculty objected to the proposal as being contrary to the tenets or Christianity. The military authorities declared that the worship of the Hachiman-god-of-war is to inculcate the spirit of Japan which is super-religion; and that in case the Doshisha faculty persist in their objection, the military instructor would be withdrawn from the school. What compromise the faculty will propose is an exceedingly interesting question. The Christian schools in Korea will have to face the same delicate problem.

29. 6월 29일

102
29th. Saturday. Showers now and then.

103
Seoul home. Our 文姬 moved to her new house which is much better located and also better built. Price ¥5,80000. Her old house sold for ¥3,70000, so I had to give ¥2,00000 plus commission ¥5800. Before buying the new house Kwang Hyon counted or pretended to count, on getting ¥2,00000 from his father, but now he tells me his father couldn't give him any. They are a beggarly lot.

30. 6월 30일

105
30th. Sunday. Cloudy.

106
Seoul home. Devastating rain storm in West Japan reported. Between the night of June 28th and the following morning the rainstorm so heavy that Kyoto alone had 45,071 houses inundated, while 80 bridges were washed away. Many people killed and injured. Osaka which suffered a terrific rain and windstorms last year was once more visited by a disasterous flood. 75,000 houses inundated. 14 bridges swept away with damages to dykes and roads inumerable.
