2
1st. Sunday. Beautiful.

3
Seoul home. Cool early in the morning but intensely hot during the day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
4
Worshipped in the Jong Kyo Church. A writer in the London Times gives a vivid account of the Ethiopian army. He admits the Ethiopian is a good fighter. But the common soldiers have neither leaders nor ammunition. They are entirely deficient in the science and training of modern war-fare. If so there is nothing in this world save the Ethiopians from the power of Italy. They seem to look for help from England, America and God. But England's interests in Ethiopia, are not vital enough to compel her to risk a war with a first-class power. America! Why the present Roosevelt may repeat what Theod. Roosevelt said about Korea. Look at the map. Ethiopia is a dagger to Italian possessions. Hence let Italy have Ethiopia. This map and dagger argument, is an excellent one when you are not in danger. God! He will only help those who help themselves.

2nd. Monday. Beautiful. Hot.

7
Seoul home. From this day the Fall Term in the Normal Primary School and the Frist Higher Common School begins. Our two boys and two little girls went to their respective schools before 8. God grant they shall have strong bodies and sound minds to do their school works satisfactorily.

3. 9월 3일

9
3rd. Tuesday. Sunny. Very hot.

10
Seoul home. 11 a.m. went to the Keijo Hotel where the wedding ceremony of Mr.李鍾眞 and Miss 李東順 was celebrate. Our 恩姬 played the wedding march for the bride, who was her schoolmate in the Girls' Higher Common School. It was just two p.m. when we got through the wedding dinner. We went from the Hotel to Nai Chung Kak(來靑閣) , the lecture hall of the Seoul Press, where Miss 孫貞春's niece was married to □□. The ritual was quite different in that (1) no veil was used for the girl; (2) the bride and bridegroom were made to salute to each standing face to face behind a table; (3) no ring was given to the bride; (4) the officiating man in frockcoat read something in which he said that marriage was not a matter which concerned Heaven or gods but which was purely personal affair of the bride and bridegroom; (5) then the pair was made to bow to the parents of the bride and of the bridegroom. The floor was so profusely greased that many people―including myself, barely escaped falling.

4th. Wednesday. Sunny. Hot.

13
Seoul home. For the last few days the heat is simply burning. Cool only between 2 and 7 in the mornings.
14
Allen left for Song Do this morning.

5. 9월 5일

16
5th. Thursday. Sunny. Intense heat.

17
Seoul home. I beat anybody I know of in having had a collection or a series of dishonest and ungrateful employees.
18
One of the worst rogues is Kang Moon Soo. He owed to my generosity, a comfortable living for over 30 years. I had to dismiss him after he'd cheated me and my two brothers nearly 20 thousand yen by direct and indirect stealing and embezzlements. He left us with hatred and ingratitude. He seemed to get some money out of certain mining speculations. Last winter, when I met him on the street or a buss he would turn his lead from me. But getting into tight place again he has the cheek to come and ask for help again.

6. 9월 6일

20
6th. Friday. Rain.

21
Seoul home. Rain from about 3 a.m. Continued more or less until 5 p.m.
22
The Annual Meet of the swimming contest under the auspices of the Korean athletic Association took place at the Seoul Municipal Pool from 3―under rain.
23
Our mother returned to Seoul this morning. She has kept well during the summer.

7. 9월 7일

25
7th. Saturday. Sunny. Awful Hot.

26
Left Seoul 8 a.m. for Song Do arriving there a little past 9:30. The Board of Managers of the Song Do Higher Common School had a meeting from 10 a.m. to pass on the Constitution of the Jaidan Hojin as drafted on the suggestions of Mr. Mathew whose experience in these things in connexion with the Kansei Gaku-in proved invaluable to us. We got through a little past 12. So I went to our home for lunch. Returned to Seoul per 2:55 p.m. train.
27
Reaching home about 5 p.m. wife and I with our baby Joseph went to the Tai Suh Kwan restaurant on the Han River where I had invited Captain and Mrs. Swinehart, Misses Appenzeller, Young, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Miller, Mr. Hobbs, Yu Uk K., Dr. Ryang, Helen Kim. Mrs. Suh Un Sook―to a Korean supper. Capt. Swinehart is a big hearted, whole souled man of firm faith. He is a wonderful architect. He is soon to leave Seoul for America to get Ewha Endowment.

8. 9월 8일

29
8th. Sunday. Sunny. Intense heat.

30
Seoul home. It was hot all through last night. The summer has returned with additional strength―hot, steamy and mouldy.
31
With mother and wife to brother Chi Chang's home for lunch 12. Scorching sun a.m. Steamy heat p.m. with rain laden clouds all over the sky. Met Mrs. Yang Kyu Chan from Hawaii. She had come with her daughter to stay a year in Korea.

9. 9월 9일

33
9th. Monday. Cloudy―Steamy. Hot.

34
Seoul home. Very hot all through last night.
35
The mercury stood 89°F in shade. Must be over 93° 95°F in the centre of the city.
36
A man wouldn't give up a certain modus operandi which has given him a success or series of successes. There used to be a small stone image of Buddha with its head partly broken on the hillside near the village of Bong Dong near Song Do. The stone Buddha was neglected for years and years. One day a Song Do man made a little straw shelter and set the little stone Buddha under it vowing that he and his wife would do better things for the image if it gave them a son. Soon the woman conceived and brought forth a son. Now it will take a miracle to persuade that couple to give up their faith in the power of the stone Buddha. Wars have made Japan great―who can persuade her to give up wars Cynn has succeeded in his public career by skillful and habitual intrigues. Who can persuade him to give up his intrigues? Many of my employees, one after another, made more money by dishonesty than they could have done by honesty. It would be simply useless to tell them honesty is the best policy. Tearful prayers on Sundays for suffering humanity and tear drawing preying on suffering tenants on week days have made cane of the richest men in Korea. Nobody under heaven can persuade him to give up either this prayers or preying.

Seoul home. In a mimiographed letter, Pastor Kwon Yung Sik(權暎植) , the Chairman of the Christian Messenger Board, volunteered the following statements. (1) The Messenger got into financial difficulties to the extent that it was one time seriously considered by the C.L.S. either to discontinue the paper or to turn it over to somebody. (2) But Pastor Jun Pil Soon, in the capacity of Editor and Publisher, has managed the paper so well from, July 1932 that the subscription has increased 50% while the budget has been balanced with credit. (3) The C.L.S. has no right to interfere with the paper as the Messenger had been separated from its control of 2 years ago. The C.L.S. subsidizes the paper to the amount of ¥1,000.00 a year. Of that account the Messenger staff presents financial reports to the Society and the Society has in its turn the right of approving or disapproving the Editor's election. (4) The Messenger with the co-operation of its Board of Managers, is independent of any organization. The Editor and Publisher is the sole responsible head of the paper.
43
Now this is a declaration of revolt. That Jun and the Positive League gang were contemplating this kind of robbery was rumored months ago but one could hardly believe they would go to that extent.

12. 9월 12일

45
12th. Thursday. Cloudy. Steamy midday.

46
Seoul home. Rain between 3 and 4.

13. 9월 13일

48
13th. Friday. Lovely―Cool a.m. Very cold.

49
Seoul home. A regular fall weather has set in.
50
Apropos Pastor Kwon's letter. In the first place he has no right send such letters to the members of the Board without having had a meeting. Secondly Jun Pil Soon is an appointee of the Christian Messenger Board of Managers to serve as editor for a term and for fixed salary. He was registered as Editor and Publisher in the Court just to meet the formal demand of the publication law which requires an individual responsible to the law. While according to the letter of the law Jun Pil Soon is the owner of the Messenger, he has no such right according to the spirit of the law.
51
Some asks: Will anybody read the Messenger if Jun and his Positive crowd publish it as their own? "But", some wise men answer: "what they want is not the Christian Messenger, but the license to publish a paper under the Newspaper law. They will change the title as soon as they find that they can keep the stolen right all safe to themselves. Cynn's finger is much suspected in the plot"

Left Seoul 7:45 a.m. with 璋, 琦, 珽, for On Yang. Arriving there 11:05 went to On Yang Up in a taxi to pay our respect to Father's grave. Returned to the Hot Springs about 12:30 enjoyed a bath. Left On Yang 4:35 p.m. for Seoul where we arrived 7:25. The boys seemed to enjoy the trip.
58
The papers have been unmuzzled to print details of a frightful plot which was to be put into execution on July 11th 1933. The conspirations three hundred strong were to bomb from airplanes the Premier's office and Metropolitan Police Headquarters, the Hypothec Bank and other great banks. A great powder magazine was to be blown up to throw the great city of Tokyo into a panic stricken chaotic state. All the Cabinet Ministers, a few prominent Household Ministers, all the heads of great political parties and a selected number of outstanding bankers were to be massacred. A dictatorial government with the Emperor as the supreme autocrat was to be set up. The whole gang of the leaders 49 in all were bagged in the night of the 10th July. Had the plot been realized Tokyo would have been worse off than on the 12 Sept. 1923.

61
Seoul home.

63
17th. Tuesday. Lovely. Very warm.

64
Seoul home. 1:45 p.m. train to Ewha College. 2:30 p.m. Captain Swinehart gave to the Building Committee a full and detailed report on the building operations he had had charge during the last 3 years. He said the whole work has been done within the estimate he made in the start with a balance of ¥3,000.00. He is a wonderful specimen of American efficiency. He deserves all praise and all thanks for the conscientious work he has done. He looks on the work not as an architect but as a missionary. Whether it was wise or otherwise to put in so much money, ¥800,000.00 in the buildings without providing an endowment fund is another question. When some American asked Helen Kim what she would have done if that money had been given her to be used for the College, Helen is reported to have said that she would have spent some of it in improving and enlarging the old Ewha buildings and then deposit the balance for endowment. If Helen had really said so she must be a very sensible girl.
65
Heard that Jun Pil Soon, the Chief Editor of the Christian Messenger had this morning moved the office of the paper to a building which the notorious Positive League members of the Sung Dong Church now use as church. What a high handed act!

18. 9월 18일

67
18th. Wednesday. Lovely.

68
Seoul home. Today's issue of the Christian Messenger declared a complete separation from the C.L.S.

19. 9월 19일

70
19th. Thursday. Lovely.

71
Seoul home. Pastor Jin Pil Soon called on me yesterday morning in the Central Y. and informed me that he had severed relations with the C.L.S. as the sole, legal owner and publisher of the Christian Messenger. When I told him that he should not have taken such a radical step without consulting the Board of Fifteen which had appointed him. He had the cheek enough to say that Board had gone out of business simply because the Presbyterian Assembly failed to elect its representatives to the Board. I told him I wasn't free to express my opinon one way or another until the Board of Fifteen shall have met.
72
Pastor Ham Tai Yung, one of the cabinet members of Cynn's Positive League, called on me and said that he wanted me to contribute toward rebuilding the Yun dong Church which will cost ¥25,000.00

20. 9월 20일

74
20th. Friday. Lovely.

75
Seoul home. 6:30 p.m. with wife went to the Myong Wol Kwan Restaurant where a large number of missionaries and Koreans gathered to give a farewell supper to Captain and Mrs. Swinehart who are to leave Seoul tomorrow afternoon for America. When I shook hands with Mrs. S. to bid her goodnight, I was surprized to hear her say to me "What a wonderful hand you have!" What did she mean?

21. 9월 21일

77
21st. Saturday. Lovely. Very warm.

78
Seoul home. The annual memorial service for father observed by our family at 4 p.m. Of the cousins No. 3 and No. 4 came.
79
6:30 p.m. our family went to the Chosen Il Po auditorium where a musical concours was staged. There were 9 vocalists, 2 violin boys and 3 piano competitors. Our Lambuth was one of the three. The event lasted from 8 to 11.

22. 9월 22일

81
22nd. Sunday. Lovely. Very warm.

82
Seoul home. This morning the result of last night's contest was announced. None of the piano boys got the prize. Instead of comparing the merit of one piano player with that of another piano player, the fool judges pooled all the points on vocalists, pianists and violinists together and gave the first prize to the man who got the highest mark. This time the fortunate man was Moon Hak Joon, a violinist. The reason of resorting to this trick on the part of the Chosun-Il-Po-Sa is that, they wanted to eliminate first prize boys from piano and violin as they had to pay ¥100.00. per 1st prize and ¥50.00. per 2nd.

23. 9월 23일

84
23rd. Monday. Beautiful. Very hot.

85
Seoul home. A regular summer day. This morning cousin Chi O(No.1) called on me 6:30 and said that his 3rd brother, Chi Sung was going to Japan to see General Terauchi in order to get his powerful influence interested in securing him a tempting coal mine concession. Cousin Chi Soh gave Chi Sung ¥200.00 for traveling expenses; but that's not enough. He needs 3 or 4 hundred Yen more. Cousin Chi O asked me in behalf of Chi Sung and his old mother to advance him that money. I was so annoyed that I told Chi O something like following: "Your 2nd brother Chi Soh is at least 3 times richer than I. For philanthropist and public enterprizes, he hardly spends hundreds where I give thousands. If he knew that Chi Sung's mining schemes would have a wind fall of hundred thousand or millions of Yen, he(Chi Soh) would finance it before I get even the rumor of it. Now the fact Chi Soh doesn't back Chi Sung with money is proof positive that there is nothing in the scheme. "Why then do you come to me?" Chi O admitted the justice of my remark. Chi Sung then came and begged and begged. I gave him ¥100.00. What a nuisance Chi Sung is!

91
Seoul home. This morning Dr. Rue and Mr. Watts of the 7th day Adventists called. They have built a Sanitorium at Chung Riang Ri at the cost of ¥100,000.00. They got ¥75,000.00 from America but they need the balance badly. So they applied for a permit to raise subscriptions and they got it. Now they want me to start the list. I know they deserve a generous gift but I am so over burdened with subscriptions that I can't give them much.

26. 9월 26일

93
26th. Thursday. Sun a.m. Rain from 11:30.

94
Seoul home. The Chistian Messenger Board of 15 met at 9:30 a.m. in the C.L.S. Board Room. The question whether the Board is constitutional or not because the Presbyterian Assembly failed to elect the Presbyterian members on the Board was definitely settled on the ground that the constitution or rules of the Board unequivocally says that the members of the Board are elected by the Executive Committee of the C.L.S. Then the Editor-in-Chief or Sa-jang, Rev. Jun Pil Soon, whose term expries end of this month was formally dismissed and in his stead Mr. Yu Uk Kyum was elected by ballot.
95
6 p.m. to 明月館 where a welcome supper was given to Dr. and Mrs. Rufus of Michigan University.

27. 9월 27일

97
27th. Friday. Lovely.

98
Seoul home. Today is the Field day in the Primary Common School where our 珽善 goes. An ideal day for the children as the rain yesterday afternoon laid the dust on the ground. Wife, Myong Huie and I went to the school to watch our boy and his schoolmates performing and enjoying the various items on the program. I left the school after 12. The Board of Directors of the Central Y. met at 6 p.m. Rev. Jun Pil Soon, the man who stole the Christian Messenger came. This Cynn's crowd all seem to have unblushing cheeks. Just before(or 2 or 3 months) before Cynn got into trouble with the Yuji Hoi, he took the notion to preach on Sundays in public parks with Pak In Duk playing the organ! Now Jun, the Reverend, who ran away with the Christian Messenger of which he was only a paid employee of the C.L.S., actually had the cheek to attend the Central Y. Board Meeting.
99
Between 4 and 5 p.m. a short hail storm.

28. 9월 28일

101
28th. Saturday. Lovely.

Seoul home. I p.m. wife, Joseph and I accompanied our Grace to the new dormitory of the Ewha College. After seeing her fix up her room and bed we left her and called on Mrs. Yang Kyu Chan and then returned home. This is the first time our Grace had left home to live in a dormitory. God bless her and her school.

29. 9월 29일

104
29th. Sunday. Lovely.

105
Seoul home. Today being the 85th anniversary our aunt's birthday we had lunch at the Station Restaurant. All things considered she is one of the most fortunate women in whole Korea.
106
The most elaborate preparations are being made by the authorities of the Government General to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the establishment of the Japanese administration in Korea. Many prominent men such as Vis-count Saito, Mr. Usami, who have had connections with the affairs of Korea have come. There can be no doubt that Japan has done wonders in Korea in introducing modern improvements and conveniences Agrculture has been improved in quantity and quality. Hundreds of thousands young men and women of all classes have been educated while only a few thousand yangbans learned the sterile Chinese books in "kul-pangs" under the Korean regime. Rivers have been bridged, road have been built, where we used to have nothing but ferry boats and foot paths. Thus the Japanese have every right to be proud of their achievement. What have we Koreans learned or done during the 25 years past? Are we a better race today than before, materially and morally?
