1. 11월 1일

2
1st. Tuesday. Beautiful.

3
Seoul home. 10:30 a.m. went to Jai-Dong Girls' Middle School where a neat little house with thick walls for the Imperial Portraits was dedicated according to Shinto Rituals.
4
2:10 p.m. to the Station to bid good bye to Mr. Wada, the ex-principal of the former First Higher Common School for Boys, now the Kyong Ki Boys' Middle School. Under his presidency our 璋善 and 琦善 graduated from the First H.C. School. I felt sorry to see him leave Seoul.

2. 11월 2일

6
2nd. Wednesday. Beautiful.

7
Seoul home. Six p.m. invited Mr. Shimomura, Chief of Public Safety Section of the Central Police Bureau to a Korean supper at home. Brothers Chi-Wang and Chi-Chang and cousin Chi-Yung also present. He seemed to enjoy the supper and the company.

3. 11월 3일

9
3rd. Thursday. Cloudy then sunny.

10
Seoul home. The Anniversary of the birth of Meiji Tenno was celebrated by the Shinto priests at the Chosun Shrine all the officials of the Government participating at 9 a.m. From the Shrine Miss Helen Kim invited Mr. Ryang, Mrs. Yu Kak Kyong, and me to take tea at the Station restaurant. There Messrs. Koo and Yu joined us. We, then went to the Shrine again to participate in the mass celebration of the day under the auspices of the Mayor. We then went to Yedogawa, four of us (Yu, Ryang, Helen Kim and I) , where we were treated by Helen Kim with sukiyaki lunch.
11
Returned home about 2 p.m.

4. 11월 4일

13
4th. Friday. Beautiful.

14
Seoul home. Rained a little early morning but the day turned out to be a beautiful one.
15
Left Seoul by 10:55 p.m. train for 光州 with 明燮 on my one week lecturing tour. As I had to leave Allen still too sick to get up and wife also in bed with her everlasting headache, loinache and all other aches a self centered woman can have, I felt uneasy and unhappy.

5. 11월 5일

17
5th. Saturday. Beautiful.

18
After a comparatively good rest arrived at 松亭里 about 8 a.m. Met by a number of Provincial officials at the Station. Autced to the city of 光州, the capital of the Southern Jun-La Province, reaching there about 9 a.m. Put up at the Yorotsuya Inn. Called on the Governor at his office where I met Mr. YiWon Po, the Vice Governor; Mr. Hyon Joon Ho, the Director of the Ho Nam Bank; Mr. Paik Nam Kyu, the Principal of an Agriculture Institute, and Mr. Jang Ung Chin, the Principal of the Korean High School for Girls. Lunch at the Governor's office. Addressed a nice crowd of boys and girls in the main hall of a primary school. The Governor gave us a feast at □木庵. By the way I visited 光州 38 years ago when father was then the Governor.

6. 11월 6일

20
6th. Sunday. Beautiful.

21
Left 光州 10 a.m. for 靈巖 District. The Governor gave me a young clerk, 孫錫度 as my guide and an auto for my itinerary of six full days. On the way we turned to 綾州 to visit the old bamboo grove and the straw thatched cottage where my father had spent nearly 9 years in exile. 先人手逢 竹林靑 依舊江山 暎碧亭 風音春靈 今白髪 桑田滄海 徒傷情. Reached 靈巖邑 a pretty little town surrounded by beautifully wooded hills. The town has a famous spring which supply the whole town with good drinking water.
22
Put up at Asahi Inn. Addressed a full house from 7 to 8:30.

7. 11월 7일

24
7th. Monday. Beautiful.

25
Left 靈岩 at 9 a.m. for 海南 District. The road runs all the way between fairly well wooded hills, through beautiful valleys for 2 and half an hours. Agreeably surprised to find the scenery so charming. Paddy fields all look so fertile. How is it that people living in such a beautiful and rich country have so poor mud huts to live in? The answer is that under the rotten government of the old Korean regime, nobody dared to have a decent house.
26
Reaching the 海南邑 about 11 a.m. the magistrate and few other friends took us visit the lovely and famous temple 大興寺. Its location is really beautiful. Much interested to see the relics of 西山大師. The handwriting of 正宗大王, of 秋史 and of 丁茶山. Addressed a full house at 7. Received the news that a fire had broken out in one of the shops next to our home.

8. 11월 8일

28
8th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

29
Left 海南 for 康律邑 at 10 a.m. reaching there about 11. A beautifully situated town with lovely hills in the back and an arm of sea in front of the town. There are many rich people in 康律, one of whom Mr. 金忠植 is said to collect 30.000 bags of unhulled rice a year. Put up at Tsuru Ya.
30
Addressed a goodly audience at 4 p.m. The Magistrate gave us a supper at the inn.

9. 11월 9일

32
9th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

33
Left 康律 11 a.m. for 長興邑 where we arrived in half an hour. Put up Iro Ha Ya. The town is embosomed in a really charming location completely surrounded by lovely hills well wooded. A clear but shallow river runs through the skirts of the town, yielding 銀魚 or silver fish noted for its delicious taste.
34
Was delighted to see a big fig tree in the back yard of the inn with luscious figs weighing down the branches. I have never tasted a fig right from a tree since I left Dr. Candler's home in Oxford Ga. 48 years ago. Addressed an appreciative crowd at 7.

10. 11월 10일

36
10th. Thursday. Beautiful.

37
Left 長興 10 a.m. for 木浦―arriving at 12. Phoned at once to Seoul home―glad to learn that Allen had gone to Song Do to recuperate and that wife was well.
38
Addressed a goodly crowd at 3 p.m. Mr. Kim, a classmate of 日善 from the Kyodo university and who is a Manager of the Ho Nam Bank in Mok-po, gave us supper in a Korean restaurant. Left 木浦 8:10 p.m. for home. Mr. 徐光卨, a Seoul lawyer on the same train informed me that Mr. Sayeki had to resign his Mayorship yesterday owing to suspicion that he had taken bribes using 鄭在洽 as his "dog".

11. 11월 11일

40
11th. Friday. Cloudy a.m. Cold.

41
Seoul home. After a fairly good rest reached Seoul 7:30. Wife, 光善 and Laura met me at the Station. Thank God. Wife is as well as she is. Reaching home I passed the lantern shop and the tailor's shop entirely burnt while the other shops on both ends badly damaged. Hear the fire broke out about 1:20 p.m. from the lantern shop where oiled paper hung over charcoal brazier caught fire.
42
My trip to the South was far pleasanter than I had feared. A week of lovely wether; a fine country of charming scenery; a thoughtful and intelligent guide in the person of 孫錫度; good roads and a fine auto; kind and hospitable receptions by local officials and people everywhere.

12. 11월 12일

44
12th. Saturday. Bright―Very cold.

45
Seoul home. What with worries about 光善’s crushing debt which I and Allen have to pay, what with anxieties about the 光鉉's case which is still in the hands of the West Gate Police; what with worries about the 鄭在洽’s case whose rascally-robberies from 光善, 致旺, 致昌 and others are being examined by the West Gate Police and whose false or true confessions of having given the money to Mr. Sayeki has cost the latter his Mayorship(府尹) ; what with worries about rebuilding the shops destroyed by fire; what with worries about the general state of affairs in these days of war time uncertainties―all these things keep me sleepless for nights on end. Add to this the utter absence of sympathy in wife whose absolute selfishness and unkindness to me and to others is making me all the more miserable. For the sake of our precious children I dare not quarrel with her. Listen what she said this morning the first thing when I went into her room. 죽게알어도 눈랭이도 안봐주지, 목구녕어 거믜줄이 쓸가봐서 밥으더 먹 너라고 서방이라고 바라고 잇지.
46
What vulgarity! What undeserved complaints!

13. 11월 13일

48
13th. Sunday. Bright. Mild.

49
Seoul home. 明燮 left Seoul 4:15 for Japan to take 順姬 a hand maid for Grace in Kyoto and to pay a visit to our 暲善 and 琦善 in Tokyo. I wish I could go with him to see those precious ones.

14. 11월 14일

51
14th. Monday. Beautiful.

52
Seoul home. By appointment I went to the Provincial Education Bureau with Kim Joon Ok. To my agreeable surprise, the Chief of the Bureau and the Inspector were very kind to Kim and gave him back the resignation which Kim had to sign 3 months ago under compulsion by the West Gate Police. This reinstate Kim in the Principalship of the Song Do Middle School.

15. 11월 15일

54
15th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

55
Seoul home. Miss Pak In Duk told 光善 that on the night of the 8th July, when Jung Jai Hup assaulted Chi Chang so savagely she asked Mr. Sayeki to stop him as Sayeki was the only man who had power over Jung. But Sayeki simply said: "Both right." It looks as if Sayeki and Jung had planned to terrorize Chi-Chang and Chi-Wang and others. Undoubtedly Sayeki is the rottenest Mayor the city of Seoul has had since the annexation.

16. 11월 16일

57

58
Seoul home. Went to the Chong No Police Station where a score of the notables of the Middle Ward were gathered to elect the Vice Commander of the Middle Ward Anti-air Brigade. Mr. 曺秉相 was elected.

64
Seoul home. 10:30 a.m. went to Vis-count Yun Duk Yung's residence(松石院) where the Mongol visitors(德王) and his suite were entertained to a Korean supper. The Chieftain was a China man in physiognomy in que and dress―a very intelligent looking man with dignified manners. One of his suite in writing something in the album dated 7 hundred and some years after Genjiskan's era―It is wonderful to think that the Japanese whose island empire was invaded by the Mongol horde under Kublaikan the grandson of Genjiskan nearly 500 years ago are today invading Mongolia subjugating various Mongol tribes in a way Genjiskan never dreamt of!

19. 11월 19일

78
光鉉 was released at 1:30 p.m. Wife and I went to the West Gate Police Station to welcome him back home. From the Police Station went to Dr. Oh's house to attend the funeral service of Dr. Oh's mother.
79
At 5 p.m. went to Chosun Hotel where a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Korea Union of National Mobilization was held to discuss the best way of keeping the Wartime-Economic-Week from the 15th to the 21st Dec. Supper at the Hotel.

Seoul home. From tonight, an Anti-air Craft drill is to be carried on for four consecutive days. All lights to be put out or carefully shaded in the nights.
86
Eight-thousand Millions of Yen in 1½ year of war. Suppose One-billion for Korea, two-billions for Manchuria; two Billions for Japan proper for extension and improvement of railroads and highways; for more and better equipment of schools and hospitals; for social and cultural and scientific advancement for the masses―in other word suppose Five-billions had been devoted to the peaceful development of these countries named and that spreading. The sum over 3 or 5 years what wonderful blessings the money so spent would have brought on the peoples concerned in particular and to the world in general!
87
Is it true a nation must have big armies and navies, colonies and self-sufficient materials to be happy and prosperous? Switzerland and the little Scandinavian Kingdoms have none of these yet they are the most prosperous and contented people in the world.

25. 11월 25일

89
25th. Friday.

90
Seoul home. Went to the Office of the Governor of Kyong Ki Province at 10 to receive a silver cup for my contribution of ¥500.00 to the 軍人後援會.

26. 11월 26일

92
26th. Saturday. Beautiful―Cold.

93
Seoul home. At 1 p.m. went to Chosun Hotel where Mr. Shiobara, the Chairman of Board of Directors of the National Mobilization Korean Union, gave a lunch. He informed us that General Kawazima(川島) gave his consent to become the Supreme Director(總裁) of the Korean Union only after having been called up five times and that the Minister of War had to beg him to do so. As the Vice Governor has to resign his "Shosaiship" in favor of the General, Mr. Shiobara will have to give up his Chairmanship. Everybody present begged him not to do so as that would weaken the Union. Shiobara said that the Governor-General insists that the chief officials of union should be private citizens and not officials to emphasize the fact the National Mobilization is the movement of the people, by the people and for the people and not of bureaucrats. That is a fine theory but the movement would not last a day if not backed and carried on by the leading officials of the Government.
