Seoul home. 1 p.m. with 瑛姬 went to the Girls' High School where the opening exercises of the School took place. Text books bought. From there went to the Normal Primary School from which our 瑛姬 had just graduated to attend a committee meeting to discuss sundry matters concerning the annual meeting of the Parents' Association to be held sometime this month. At 6 p.m. went to the Lily Garden Restaurant to attend a meeting of the Board of Managers of the Seoul Orphanage. Returned home quite tired.
4
About 9 received a telegram from our 瑛姬 saying ⌈ミゴトニミ◉パス⌋. Thank God.

We, Myong Sup-i and I, left Seoul 4:15 p.m. per "Akatsuki" for Fusan on our way to Tokyo to see our precious boys, 璋善 and 琦善. Reaching Fusan about 11:30 p.m. went on the Ferry boat "Konggo Maru" right from the train. Weighed anchor about 12.

8. 4월 8일

24
8th. Friday. Sunshine. Warm.

25
After a good rest we reached Shimonoseki 7:30 a.m. Breakfast at the San Yo Hotel and left the port at 9:25 on train all day long. The neatness of the little country homes, of the fields, of the gardens and evergreen hedges―what a contrast to the unsightly and slovenly mud villages and treeless hills of Korea!
26
By the way, was surprised to see the mountains to the right quite as bare as the mountains in Southern Korea.

9th. Saturday. Pale sun.

Tokyo. After a restful night in the train we reached Tokyo at 7 a.m. The joy of meeting our two boys and In Ho at the station made me forget all the fatigue of the journey. Mrs. Pak(Ahn Yung Ja) and her husband welcomed us. Glad also to see Yong Koo. We taxied to the "Seiko Lodging" on Ogikubo Street 3-60. Found the rooms all clean. After breakfast called on Professor Iguchi with Mrs. Ahn. He is said to be the best piano teacher in Tokyo. Looks very young.

10. 4월 10일

31
10th. Sunday. Rather cool.

32
Tokyo. After breakfast, with our two boys and Mrs. Ahn first payed our respect to the Meiji Shrine, then to Residence of H.H. King Yi. From there we called on Mr. Sekiya who was real glad to see me. He entertained us to lunch. Visited the 一心塾, a private hostel which the sons of Mrs. Sekiya keep for the benefit of a score of students. It is almost a monastic household. Mr. Sekiya's eldest son is a clergy man in the Anglican Church! His 2nd son whom we met is a fine looking young man of philosophic turn of mind. Mrs. Sekiya is a devout Christian of the Anglican Church. Called on Mr. Usami. His good wife and he were really glad to see me. I felt quite at home with these people.

11. 4월 11일

34
11th. Monday. Rain.

35
Tokyo. Went to the U-Ye-No School of Music at 9 a.m. to attend the opening exercises of the institution. Leaving 琦善 in the school, we, 璋善 and Mrs. Ahn, went to the Mitsubishi building to see Kang Suk Chun, the husband of the eldest daughter of cousin Chi Sung. Called on Mr. Nakajima of the Korean Association. He entertained us to lunch at the Choo-o-tei. After which we called on 姜’s wife.

12. 4월 12일

37
12th. Tuesday. Cool.

38
Tokyo. After breakfast 璋善 and I went to Moto Sumiyoshi to see the preparatory dept. of the Ho-sei University where our 璋善 will study for the coming year. The school is 1:30 hour far from the Sei-Ko Lodging. We had to change cars three times. 璋善 will ave to get a boarding house nearer to the school. Called on Baron Sakatani at his home 2 p.m. He was cordial and kind to me. Accepting the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Usami, we went to 雅叙園, a huge building with hundreds of rooms most elaborately decorated, 300 girl-waiters. Chinese meals more or less Japanized to suit the Japanese taste.

13. 4월 13일

40
13th. Wednesday. Cloudy. Cool.

41
Tokyo. Mr. I. Yamagata and his elder brother T. Yamagata invited me to lunch at the New Grand Restaurant. Happy to see them. The older man looked no older than I saw him nearly 10 years ago while Mr. I. Yamagata seemed to have aged very much. 4 p.m. the Chosen Association(朝鮮協會) held the memorial service for Messrs. Baba and Iriye, its two distinguished members. The room was full and among those present I met many who had held important positions as provincial governors, members of the Governor General's Cabinets as bank directors. Baron Sakatani presided and I was asked to say a few word. I thanked them for the promulgation of the Volunteer Ordinance of the revised Education Regulations and of the law prohibitting minors to drink and smoke.

14. 4월 14일

43
14th. Thursday. Pretty. Tokyo.

44
Yesterday at the Chosen Association Meeting I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Inouye Kakugoro whom I had met in 1881 and who under the instruction of that great commoner, Mr. Fukuzawa came to Korea and started the first tri-weekly paper in modern sense called the 漢城旬報(By the way, I found a complete copy of this valuable paper among my old papers and gave it to the C.C.C. Library last year) .
45
Invited 尹瑾 who has charge of the Korean Y.M.C.A. in Tokyo to lunch at Choo-O-Tei. Then went to the Y. with him, Mrs. Ahn and 璋善. Found the building not very attractively kept. Took photos.
46
From the Y. we went to Mrs. Ahn's home and stayed there until 6 p.m. when I went to Ah-So-Yen, where I was invited to supper by Messrs. Yun Kun Kim, the Tong-A Correspondent and Cynn Tai Ik, the Chosun Il Po man.

Tokyo. Purchased some "miage" for home folks etc. in the morning. Entertained the Dong-A and Chosun Il Po correspondents and Yun Kun to a supper at the New Grand. 仁鎬, 璋善, 琦善, and 姜錫天 also present.

16. 4월 16일

51
16th. Saturday. Pretty.

52
Left Tokyo by the 9 a.m. Tsubame for Kyoto. Very hard to part with our precious boys at the station. Reached Kyoto a little after 4 p.m. Was met by Bong Sup-i and went straight to his house where our Grace lived when she was in Kyoto. Found the house clean and nice but so called. Sukiyaki supper with Bong Sup and Myong Sup.

17. 4월 17일

54
17th. Sunday. Rain.

55
Left Kyoto 9 a.m. Rain from 2 p.m. all the way to Shimonoseki. Surprised to see the mountains far to the right almost as treeless as some mountains in Southern Korea. The hills on both sides of the main R.R. lines are beautifully wooded. Reaching Shimonoseki at 9 went straight to the ferry boat which weighed anchor about 10:30. Prince or King Yi and his princess on the same boat on their way to Korea.

18. 4월 18일

57
18th. Monday. Beautiful. Warm.

58
After a night of tolerably good rest our ferry boat arrived at Fusan about 6 a.m. Soon afterward we landed and tried to board the super express "Akatsuki" 6:50, but all the seats had been sold already. We had to leave Fusan per the "Nozomi" 7:30 a.m. The cars were crowded to the limit. Reached Seoul 3:25 p.m. Happy to see wife and children, except three youngest ones who hadn't returned from their schools, at the station. Taxied to home. Thank God we had a peaceful trip to and from Tokyo.
59
After a little rest, went to cousin Chi Soh's house to pay my respect to uncle who had come to Seoul to spend his remaining years with his sons. It must have been hard, very hard, to him to leave Sai Mal, the old village where had lived for 85 years. He will sorely miss the hills, trees, fields and flowers of the dear old homestead.

Seoul home. My impressions of the flying trip to and from Tokyo as follows: 1. The more I see what Japan has done at home and abroad the more I am compelled to take off my hat to the great Japanese people in profound admiration and respect. After having made their home islands beautiful and rich, their energy and effi-.

Seoul home. (Impressions of my trip continued from the 19th) cliency overflowed into Korea. In 25 years they have covered the Peninsula with a network of rail and auto roads; improved harbors, agriculture, industry; spread education and Japanizing culture. They have transported as it were little Japanese towns, into every centre of profit and pleasure so that a Japanese traveling in Korea feels no stranger in a strange land as he can enjoy every comfort and convenience as he did in his home-land. As if this were enough they have gobbled up Manchuria 7 or 8 times of Korea literally over night and in five years have introduced order and peace in vast territory which it has never before enjoyed. Again the super-abundant energy of the Japanese race leaped over the Great Wall and in ten months has conquered China as Gengiskan or Noruch had ever conquered her.

21. 4월 21일

67
21st. Thursday. Beautiful. Warm.

68
Seoul home. Went to the last farewell service for my departed friend, Mr. Yu Jung Soo. He and I were only two surviving members of the Special Embassy which the then King of Korea went to Japan in 1881. There were 60 men in that crowd. I don't think any of them besides us two are living. Now that Yu is gone I am only the one left.

22. 4월 22일

70
22nd. Friday. Cloudy.

71
Seoul home. Farmers want rain. Cloudy and warm weather promises a refreshing rain.
72
(My impressions continued from the 20th) Now isn't a folly, on the part of the arrogant Americans and Europeans, to try to bottle up such a valiant and energetic race in a beautiful but poorly endorsed country by exclusion bills and tariff walls? It was certainly a blunder worse than sin on the part of Chiang K.S. and his party to educate 400,000,000 people in thoroughly anti-Japanese principle and policy thus depriving Japan the only room for expansion and only market for her products.
73
From Shimonoseki to Tokyo I saw very few young able bodied men working in the fields. Only women and aged persons sowing or weeding. Where are the young men? They must have gone to cities and factories and at present to the front. I understand more than a million soldiers have left the homeland. That must be grave question to the nation―this farm labor question I mean.
74
The West had been fooled by 4 S's of the Japanese viz: Their Small Size and Sweet Smiles.

23. 4월 23일

76
23rd. Saturday. Cloudy. p.m.

Seoul home.

24. 4월 24일

79
24th. Sunday. Pale sun. Cool.

80
Seoul home. This coolness keeps off rain to the alarm of farmers.
81
About 10 a.m. went to 傳巖亭 walking all the way from the terminus of the tram car to our villa. Glad to find myself none the worse for the walk up and down the steep hills.
82
Enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the flowers of the season and the sweet air of the hills. Had a good lunch. Returned home about 5 p.m.

25. 4월 25일

84
25th. Monday. Bright. Cool.

85
Seoul home. Went to the Station to see our baby 涎善 leave for Chemulpo with his classmates for an excursion 8:55 a.m. At 10 went to the Citizen's Hall where the Chosun Il Po held the opening exercises for the Exhibition of Korean products.
86
6:30 p.m. went to the Japanese Y. where about 60 Japanese and Korean pastors and laymen were gathered for social conference. Mr. Tanaka, the Chief of the higher Police Section of the Provincial Police Bureau, delivered a two hour address on the duty of the Japanese citizen. Christian or Buddhist to bow toward East where the Emperor lives, to bow to the Shrine where the Imperial Ancestors are worshipped and to bow to the Dead Soldiers' Shrine. Returned home 11:30.

26. 4월 26일

88
26th. Tuesday. Pale sun. Too cool.

89
Seoul home. 7:30-8 a.m. to the Shrine with a score of Japanese and Korean pastors and laymen to pay our respect to the Shrine as the spirits of the soldiers who died in the service of their country are worshipped by the Emperor himself in the Yasukuni Temple in Tokyo. All the banks have holiday today.
90
To the Station to welcome Miss Appenzeller who returned to Seoul per the super express 1:35 p.m. She looks very well.

27. 4월 27일

92
27th. Wednesday. Cloudy. Cool.

93
Left Seoul 8:15 a.m. for Song Do to attend the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the Song Do Middle School to pass the 1938-39 budget etc. etc. Lunch at the school adjourned a little past 2 p.m. Left Song Do 4:50 p.m. train, arriving at home 7:25.

28. 4월 28일

95
28th. Thursday. Pretty. Warm.

96
Seoul home. 7:30 p.m. five speakers representing five or four religious bodies(天道敎, 儒敎, 佛敎, 耶穌敎) made addresses on the National Crises(時局) under the strict supervision of the police in the large auditorium of Central Y. I was asked to preside.

29. 4월 29일

98
29th. Friday. Beautiful.

99
Seoul home. Attended the mass celebration of the anniversary of the Emperor's birthday conducted by the Mayor on the Shrine Square at 7:50 and the Shinto celebration of the day conducted by the High Priest at 8:30 a.m.
100
For the first time since the Annexation 27 years ago, the Christian pastors of the Korean churches of the city held a union service with the Pastors of the Japanese Christians for the celebration of the Imperial birthday. Noteworthy that those pastors and laymen who used to pride themselves for not participating in any such services for not bowing toward the Imperial Residence etc. came today, willy nilly! 女子師普 Patrons' Association Committee Meeting from 1 to 3 p.m.

30. 4월 30일

102
30th. Saturday. Beautiful. Warm.

103
Seoul home. With wife and little children went to 傳巖亭Grace and her baby also went with us. Flowers which have almost all gone in the city gardens are fairly fresh in our villa grounds and on our hills.
