Seoul home.

3. 3월 3일

8
3rd. Friday. First rain of the spring a.m.

9
Seoul home. 2 p.m. at the request of Mr. Choi Rin, President of the Mai-il Shin Po, went to Government General's Office and had the honor of taking a "talky" picture with General Minami. I read to him a little paper in which I first thanked him for his efforts to abolish the practice of discriminating against the Koreans and to realize the ideal of Oneness of Japan and Korea(內鮮一體) . Then I suggested to bring about this realization, that Korean and Japanese students should be admitted to the Government Schools and colleges on equal terms as to number; that the official appointments should place no discrimination against the Koreans; and that the use and teaching of the Korean language should have no official restrictions.
10
Mr. 孫錫泰, the young man who was so good to me during the week I had to tour round in South Jun-La Do came to see me this afternoon. Very happy to have supper with him at Chosun Hotel 6 p.m.

4. 3월 4일

12
4th. Saturday. Bright.

13
Seoul home. Hear brother Chi-Chang was summoned by the Prosecutor, who has charge of Sayeki's bribery case, yesterday morning and was detained in prison last night. Too bad.
14
4 p.m. went to Keijo Y. where a tea party was given to honor Mr. McGee, secretary of World Christian Students Federation.

5. 3월 5일

16
5th. Sunday. Cloudy a.m.

17
Seoul home. Mr. Barnhart invited Messrs. Kasaya and Niwa of the Japanese Y. and Koo J.O. and me of the Central Y. to lunch at his home to meet Mr. Mackin from Geneva. He was evidently anxious to hear us talk about the Y. work in Korea under the new circumstances but neither Koo nor I were very talkative.

6. 3월 6일

19
6th. Monday. Light shower a.m.

20
Seoul home. Han Sun(漢善) 's wedding ceremony was performed at the Citizens' Hall. The bride is the daughter of Kim Ki Tai, one of the richest Koreans of Kyong Sang Nam Do. Bo-Sun(譜善) , the eldest brother of Han Sun is absolutely opposed to the match―so much so that he absented himself from home for the last two weeks. His reason is that the girl even in her school days was given to money spending and money bragging.

7. 3월 7일

22
7th. Tuesday. Cloudy―Chilly.

23
Seoul home. 2 p.m. went to Chung Ryang Ri Station where the last farewell service for Mr. Choi Yong Whan was held. His wife, formerly Miss Im Hyo Jung, is a remarkably intelligent and energetic woman. She has always shown me sweet kindness in remembrance of what little I did for her during her stay in Tokyo years ago. Sorry to see her widowed. But with quite a fortune which her husband has left and her native energy and ability she may have no trouble in her material support. Her little daughter must be her great comforter.

8. 3월 8일

25
8th. Wednesday. Cloudy―Chilly.

26
Seoul home.

9. 3월 9일

28

29
Seoul home.

10. 3월 10일

31
10th. Friday. Cloudy most of the day.

32
Seoul home. The Army Memorial Day. On this day 34 years ago the great battle at Mukuden was won by the Japanese Army deciding the issues of the Russo-Japanese War in favor of the Rising Sun Empire. Went to Chosun Shrine at 11:30 to bow to the spirits of the Imperial Ancestors with General Kawajima and a few others. Then to the Army's Cemetery in Ryong San. Returned home about 1:30.
33
Dr. Ryang, Mr. Yu O.K. and I were invited to the Korean Y.W.C.A. to meet a committee appointed by the Ewha Alumni Association to find out the reasons of Miss Appenzeller's resignation. Mrs. Choi Jai Hak and Miss Ko Bong Kyong were the chief spokesman. They wanted to know if the resignation was either covertly or overtly suggested by the authorities. They blamed the Board of Managers for not preventing such a resignation. We simply told them that as members of the Board were not authorized to report its doing to such a committee.

11. 3월 11일

35
11th. Saturday. Rain all the morning.

36
Seoul home. Went to Ewha College to attend its commencement exercises. This is the first time I attended these annual events since our dear Grace graduated. Returned to the city by 1:08 p.m. train.
37
Went to the Women's Seminary to see Sohn Won Il married. He is one of the brothers-in-law of Chi-Chang. Some years ago Sohn was arrested as a suspect in connection with the Nan Kin Military School affair. It was to save him from the clutch of the Pyong Yang Police that Chi-Chang spent certain amount of money through the medium of that arch-scoundrel Jung Jai Hup. Chi-Chang is charged with the crime of having bribed Sayeki, then the Chief of the Provincial Bureau of Police in Seoul. From the beginning Chi-Chang's marriage with Miss Sohn Jin Sil, has been the source of ceaseless trouble and expenditure to him.
38
Mr. Pak Yung Chul(朴榮喆) died last night from apoplexy. His death is a loss to the Korean community. He and Han Sang Ryong have been twin figures who act as show-window decorations for the Government General. Having risen from a humble origin Pak by nature and necessity, was far more affable and generous than Han who is disliked by many for his arrogance and selfishness.

12. 3월 12일

47
Seoul home. For the last few days an icy cold spell has gripped Seoul.
48
2 p.m. had the joy of embracing our dear boys from Tokyo. To give us an agreeable surprise, they came without letting us know their arrival. God bless them.
49
3 p.m. went to Pak Moon Sa where an elaborate funeral service was held with Buddhistic rituals for late Pak Yung Chul.
50
All the Government dignitaries from General Minami down came to pay their last respect to the remains of one of their favorites.

15. 3월 15일

52
15th. Wednesday. Lovely sun. Very cold.

53
Seoul home. As cold as a deep winter day, 3˚ or 4˚ below zero.
54
10:30 a.m. went to Chosun Shrine where the Good-Year Prayer Service was held. For 1 hour and 40 minutes we had to sit in open hall exposed to cold-icy winds from all sides without overcoats and hats. On our way home we, Miss Kim Helen and I, were fortunate enough to get a free ride in Mr. Kim Sa Yon's auto. He took us to Chosun Hotel. Helen and I had lunch together. At two p.m. went to Jung Dong Methodist Church to celebrate the 61st birthday of Dr. Ryang. The Church was full and the service lasted near 3 hours I couldn't help contrasting this simple but loving celebration for Ryang with the showy but empty funeral service I saw yesterday in honor of late Pak Yung Chul.

Seoul home. Hitler acts like a hungry wolf let loose among a flock of sheep. He gobbled up Austria two years ago. Last summer he annexed a choice slice of Czechoslovakia―the Sudenten district. Then a few days ago he marched into Prague and turned Bohemia―Moravia into a German Protectorate. Ukraina is the great objective of his east ward ambition. England and France are shouting, thief! thief!, and nothing doing. What will Russia do?

20. 3월 20일

73
20th. Monday. Gloomy―Icy cold wind.

74
Seoul home. 8 a.m. I invited Mr. Kim Tai Woo to breakfast at Chosun Hotel. To this farewell breakfast I invited Miss Helen Kim, Soh Un Sook, Yu O.K., Dr. Ryang, cousin Chi Oh and Jung Kwang Hyon. Am glad I have been able to give Mr. Kim this token of my appreciation of his friendship.

21. 3월 21일

21st. Tuesday. Cloudy.

78
Seoul home. We have just passed the second winter after the China trouble began July 7th, 1937. Already we had great difficulty in getting coal even coal brickets for our stoves. What brickets we did get at exorbitant prices were mud brickets coated with coal dust. If the war continues another year we shall have no coal―even brickets such as they are. Everybody is asked to sell what gold ornaments they have to the Government. Women are giving up their precious heir looms.

84
23rd. Thursday. Pale sun a.m. Cloud p.m.

85
Seoul home. With Mr. Niwa, Koo Ja Ok and Dr. Ryang called on Mr. Siga, the Chief of the General Business Bureau of King Yi's Household to express our regret that through the mistakes of Jung In Ik, the land transactions which Koo had concluded with the Household caused misunderstanding on the part of the Household officials as to the motives of the Central Y.M.C.A.
86
The gist of the matter stands as follows: About 3 years ago Jung In Ik, a Mai-il Shin bo reporter who frequented the Yi Household Office suggested to Koo Ja Ok that the Central Y. should send an application to the Household asking it to sell a piece of its land outside the Great East Gate to be used as an athletic ground for the Central Y. School. Koo, who has no more business ability than the stick he carries applied for it. More than a year was spent in negotiations―all carried on through Jung In Ik. Koo spent ¥1,500.00 of the Y. School fund without any authorization to lubricate the official wheels of the Household. When the Household people did consent to sell the ground proved useless for our purpose so Dr. Oh and Barnhart simply rejected it. Koo was desperate because he had to refund the money he had spent and Jung was disappointed because he could not get the commission. So Koo asked permission to sell the land to a 3rd party. Dr. Oh and B. and I told Koo he might do so under two conditions: (1) The consent of the Yi Household. (2) No financial responsibility to the Central Y.

(The Yi Household land affair continued)
95
Sometime later after that, Koo reported to the Board of Central Y. Zai-Dan that Jung In Ik having secured the consent or understanding of the Yi Household to do with the land as Central Y. thought fit, he(Koo) had sold the land to a man named Kim □ □, whom Jung recommended at a price slightly higher than the price which the Yi Household demanded from the Central Y. The profit amounted to ¥15,000.00. Dividing it into halves, Koo gave some like ¥4,000.00 to Jung In Ik and ¥□□□□.00 someone else, contributed ¥5,200.00 to Central Y. In these transactions nobody but Koo and Jung had anything to do Now the Yi Household ask the Central Y. to return the land to the Household as the Y. had bought the land on fraudulent terms.

Seoul home. For the last whole month the weather has been so chilly that I have to have fur vest and heavy overcoat―which I seldom wore except on the coldest days during the winter months. The fact is that the First Moon up to the middle of the Second Moon of the Lunar Calendar is the chilliest month in this part of Korea.
