2. 6월 2일

5
2nd. Friday. Cloudy―Almost cold a.m.

6
Seoul home. Farmers are uneasy on account of the long drought just at this time when transplanting rice-sprouts needs a deal of water in the paddy fields.
7
Cloudy but too cool, almost cold for rain. West wind all morning. Sunshine afternoon.
8
Today being the 86th birthday of uncle I had luncheon at cousin Chi-Soh's home.

3. 6월 3일

10

11
Seoul home. 3 p.m. Mr. Kasaya of the Keijo Y.M.C.A. and Yi of Pai Chai High School left Seoul on their way to Amsterdam to attend the International Convention of Christian Young People.
12
About 150 Japanese Kumiai Church leaders have come to Seoul to hold a Believers' Convention from today. They are a fine set of men and women. Some of whom enjoying national reputation in various lines of work.

4. 6월 4일

14
4th. Sunday. Beautiful. Cool.

15
Seoul home. 7 p.m. went to Citizens' Hall to hear Mr. Hatanaka 富中, a distinguished Kumiai Pastor in Osaka. His Subject was the Light of the Orient. His idea was light shines best in darkness. Most of us have forgotten the causes and results of the Crimean War. But out of that darkness came Florence Nightingale and her Red Cross Society. Out of the religious darkness in England in 18th Century came John and Clarles Wesley and their Methodism. Now the China affairs has come the Union of Japan and Korea(內鮮一體) . Japan can't live without Korea and Korea can't live without Japan. He spoke more than an hour and kept me awoke. He is one of the finest speakers I have heard. His gesture and manner of speaking is American.

5. 6월 5일

17
5th. Monday. Beautiful. Windy. Dusty.

18
Seoul home. Last night Mr. Hatanaka in the heat of his eloquence said something like this: "American brag about having given independence to the Philippines. Independence indeed! Who are responsible for the national defense of the Philippine Republic? American soldiers and sailors. Who are directing the foreign relations for the Philippines? American diplomats! It was deliciously amusing to see how completely he had forgotten the status of the Independent Manchukuo Empire.
19
4:30 the Kumiai visitors and about 40 Korean pastors and laymen had a friendship dinner at the Keijo Hotel. A very pleasant gathering to all.

6. 6월 6일

21
6th. Tuesday. Pretty. Dusty.

22
Seoul home. I invited some of the prominent men and women―about 16―from among the Japanese Kumiai visitors to take breakfast at Chosun Hotel at 8 a.m. Mr. Niwa helped me to select these people among whom were Mrs. Yebina, Revs. Hatanaka, Simizu and Nishiwo. Mr. and Mrs. Yimai 今井, were very friendly to us. He took pictures with few of us at his own expenses. Mr. Yimai is partially paralytic so that he couldn't use his right arm and leg freely. It was touching and beautiful to see the tenderness, gracefulness and thoughtfulness with which his charming wife ministered to his wants. They seem to be strong Christians.
23
Went to the Kumiai Church 8 p.m. to hear Mr. Simizu(淸水) lecture on the "Reconstruction of the East."

7. 6월 7일

Seoul home. Our baby 珽善 had 몸살 last Saturday. He got well enough to go to school Monday. Last night he studied until 1 this morning in spite of my advice. He got a bad headache with temperature up to 38.0˚ this morning. He suffered from head-ache all day with feverish temperature―so bad he couldn't sleep.

13th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

47
Seoul home. According to the papers in Seoul, the Consular and military authorities(Japanese) in Tientsin are threatening to blockade the English and French settlement as the English authorities have persisted in giving protection or shelter to the Chinese assassin who murdered a pro-Japanese banker and other anti-Japanese agitators.

14. 6월 14일

49
14th. Wednesday. Cloudy a.m.

50
Seoul home. At 10 a.m. went to the Shrine-offering rice field in the district of Boo-Pyong where the Governor of the Province and the Mayor of Seoul with numerous guests performed the ceremony of transplanting the rice sprouts. The Kyong Ki Provincial Agriculture Experimental Station has lately been removed to this beautiful place from outside of the Great East Gate. After lunch returned to the City about 2 p.m.

15. 6월 15일

53
15th. Thursday. Beautiful. Hot.

54
Seoul home. Paper say that yesterday from 6 p.m. the Japanese authorities, military and Consular, began blockading the English and French settlements in Tientsin qui-viving and searching every man and woman going into the settlements. Just think of the arrogant English met and English women submitting meekly to the indignities of being forced to undress to be searched like so many spies or smugglers. In the eyes of the Chinese the prestige of the domineering Anglo-Saxon has been degraded to the dust. While I think the Japanese are going a little too far to subject the English to such personal humiliations, I can't help feeling that the English are paid in kind some of their intolerable arrogance against the Chinese and the Oriental races. I still remember with deep indignation how sad I felt when years ago I saw the placard which the English had hung at the gate leading to the public garden in Shanghai with these words in big Chinese and English letters: "No dogs and Chinese admitted."
55
9 a.m. went to the Training School for the volunteers to attend the Entrance Ceremony of 300 volunteers.

17th. Saturday. Beautiful. Hot.

63
Seoul home. Jung Chang Sup, the eldest brother of Jung Bong Sup, our Grace's husband, started a mutual-help Society 共濟會 some 7 years ago(昭和 7年) . Each member pays 10 sen a day making 3 yen a month and 36 yen a year. At the end of a year he gets ¥40.00. The Society is reported to have 1,600 members. So far all right. But Jung Chang Sup is now accused of having embezzled the Fund of the Society to the amount of ¥30,000.00. He must refund the money at once or be sent to the penitentiary. Our son-in-law, Bong Sup asked me to stand a guarantor to borrow the necessary amount from a bank. I had to refuse doing so as it is against the explicit command of our father in his will to his children never to stand security for anybody.
64
What pains me most in this miserable affair is that our precious Grace whom I love most tenderly is placed in an exceedingly embarrassing situation in her husband's home. Worse still she looks and acts as if she feels hurt that I don't help her husband out of the trouble.
