The evening papers say that at 9 this morning German war planes threw bombs on Warsaw. Strange England and France on whose promise of assistance Poland has depended so much seems to have taken no active steps toward helping the poor Poland.

Seoul home. As result of the dreadful drought the three Southern Provinces (6 now) are face to face with one of the direct famines Korea has had. Among those who have lands in South Choong Chung Do, we are most severely hit. Our crops have altogether failed so we shall have no income next year. Yet the authorities seems to take no account of this great famine. The contributions are piled on us without mercy. Bonds―War-bonds 3 1/2% interest―are beginning to be forced on us. The Police are collecting ¥100,000.00 to build police sergeants' residences―with ¥300,000.00. More to follow to rebuild the Jong-No Station. Collections are to be levied to build Shrines for the spirits of the dead soldiers one in Seoul and another in Namsan. More bonds are to be forced on us by the Hypothec Bank.

Hear Bishop Kim Jong Woo died at his home this morning. The Korean M.E. Church has lost a man whose place would be hard to fill. He had a little boil on his right foot for which he entered Severance Hospital for treatment. An operation―blood poison―suffering for 3 weeks―then passed away―like a dream.

Seoul home. If one were to ask Hitler why he plays a mad dog among the countries of the Central Europe he would no doubt say that he is doing all his brutal meanness for the happiness and prosperity of the German nation can be promoted by destroying the happiness and prosperity of Austria, Czechoslovakia and of Poland? How is the German prosperity promoted by taking the bread and butter out mouths of the entire German nation to be turned into bombs, bullets and poison gases for the destruction of the lives and property of millions upon millions of the neighboring countries whose only crime is to have been placed too near the country which is dominated by a mad-man(?) If Hitler succeeds in his awful demoniacal career, many a fair man's faith in an all mighty and all wise and all loving God would be shaken.

25. 9월 25일

84
25th. Monday. Beautiful a.m. Showers p.m.

85
Seoul home. I have known four old men whose latter years have been made more or less unhappy by having wives or concubines form 20 to 40 years younger than they. All these women were coarse, ungrateful, and over-sexed. One of them who has had unlimited opportunity to learn better manners and higher ideals of life never care to learn anything higher than what appeals to animal instincts and passions. She is so offensively insolent to everybody, relatives and strangers, alike that anybody who has once tasted her rude arrogance never cares to come with in 40 feet of her sight. One may imagine what her old, long suffering husband has to bear.

26. 9월 26일

87
26th. Tuesday. Pleasant. Cloudy.

88
Seoul home. 9:50 a.m. went to Ewha College to attend a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Managers. One of the important decisions made by 3 against 2 votes was to let the girls participate in intercollegiate games even if Sundays have to be unkept. Missionaries naturally opposed to the motion. But since the students of Christian schools have to attend services at Shin Koong on innumerable patriotic occasions which generally fall on Sundays why shouldn't they play games on Sundays, if they have to? Besides all games and sports are controlled by the powers that be Christian students who refuse to play on Sundays will be marked as unpatriotic.

27. 9월 27일

90
27th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

91
Seoul home. Accepting the invitation of Mr. Pak In Joon, the architect, I took lunch at Boir Grand Restaurant with Pak, Ryang, and Yu.
92
Warsaw reported to have fallen by the unconditional capitulation of the brave Polish defenders who had held the German invaders at bay for more than two weeks. The beautiful city must have been reduced to ashes. Why this cruelty? Hitler is applauded by many as a hero whose brutality has sacrificed and will sacrifice countless lives and untold treasure to his mean ambition for victory and conquest.

28. 9월 28일

94
28th. Thursday. Cloud. Cool.

95
Seoul home. 10 a.m. The members of Board of Managers of Managers of the Korea Methodist Chruch met at Womenꡑs Seminary to elect a new Bishop. 21 members present thus requiring at least 14 votes for election. Revs. Kim Yung Sup and Yi Yun Yong get 7 and 8 votes respectively at 6th balloting. Rev. Jung Choon Soo came between, to the surprise of everybody, then Yi asked the Board not to wast votes on him as he had no desire to run for the honer. Then the next ballot showed the men who had voted for Yi cast their votes on Jung and not on Kim So. Mr. Jung was elected at 9th ballot, to the agreeable surprise of all who did not want Kim elected because he is Hugh Cynn's man.
