1. 1월 1일

2
1st. Monday. Bright. Mild.

3
Seoul home. 8 a.m. went to the Chosun Shrine to pay the new year respect to the Imperial Divinities. Form 9 to 10:15 made the routine new year calls on Governor General, the Commander of the Army of Korea, etc.

2. 1월 2일

5
2nd. Tuesday. Cloudy―Dark.

6
Seoul home. A little sprinkling of snow. We need snow―plenty of it to cover the tender blades of barley and to provide water for the paddy fields as soon as the spring opens. This alarming drought makes farmers uneasy already. The rice stores in the city have been besieged by crowds of people already for the past months to get a tiny measure of rice everyday. As the winter advances and the stock of rice runs shorter and scarcer, the crowds will become greater. People predict very dangerous times in the spring.

3. 1월 3일

8
3rd. Wednesday. Cloudy early a.m. Bright p.m.

9
Seoul home. Few flakes of snow 8―8:30 in the morning. Went to Chosun Shrine to attend the ceremony of worshipping the Beginning―whatever it means from 10 to 11:30 a.m. On the way home went into Pak Maria's Tea-room with Madam Yu Kak-Kyong and had a very refreshing cups of coffee.
10
Huh Jai Hoo called. He is a Northerner. He said that his 10 years' stay in Jun-la Do as a Primary School teacher had convinced him that the Jun-la Do people are the most calculating and unreliable folks.

4. 1월 4일

12
4th. Thursday. Pale sun. Chilly.

13
Seoul home. To adopt the Japanese form of Surnames or, to keep the Korean names unchanged is a question that worries Koreans―especially of the high Yang Ban class. General Minami officially declared that he has no idea of forcing Koreans to adopt the Japanese form. The trouble is that in the same statement he said things that unmistakable intimated that he would be gratified if Koreans did adopt the Japanese names. This mania for forcing everything Korea to be conformed to the corresponding things in Japan, seems to be very unnecessary and unwise policy. Variety is the spice of life. A great Empire which Japan aspires to be must necessarily be composed of many races. To compel them to be exactly alike in everything is an impossible and foolish policy.

5. 1월 5일

15
5th. Friday. Lovely. Icy cold.

16
Seoul home. Cousin Chi-Yung called. He thinks from the rumors he has heard, that the Abe Cabinet may be forced to resign inside two or three months; that either Ukaki or Minami may become the next Premier; and that in case Minami leaves Korea General Koiso, the former Commander of the Army of Korea may become the Governor General. I put this down just to see how correct his information may prove to be. 璋善 and 琦善 left Seoul for Tokyo at 4 p.m. God bless them always!

6. 1월 6일

18
6th. Saturday. Bright. Mild.

19
Seoul home. A grand reception was given to about 2,000 returned soldiers by the citizens of the city from 1 p.m. at the Kyong Hoi Roo in the Old Palace.

7. 1월 7일

21
7th. Sunday. Cloudy. Chilly.

22
Seoul home. 3:30 p.m. cousins Chi-Soh, Chi-Yung, brothers Chi-Wang and Chi-Chang and I met at cousin Chi-Oh's home to exchange views about the pro's and con's of adopting the Japanese names. Brothers Chi-Chang, Chi-Wang and cousin Chi-Oh are of the opinion that we shall have to adopt the Japanese names for the sake of our children. Cousin Chi-Yung is strongly against it while cousin Chi-Soh stands undecided.
23
Left cousin Chi-Oh's home about 6:30. Snow began to fall.

8. 1월 8일

25
8th. Monday. Lovely. Very cold.

26
Seoul home. Found snow on the ground about 1/2 inch thick.
27
Cousin Chi-Oh had a serious accident in a bath-house. Visited him at Severance Hospital. He told us that yesterday evening about 8, he went to a Japanese bath-house. The water was at first rather luke warm in the larger tub. Later he jumped into the so-called medicated water in the smaller tub―which happened to be so boiling hot that he trying to jump out in a haste, his foot slipped and he fell into the boiling water. Fortunately the water wasn't deep enough to cover his head.
28
When he succeeded in getting out of the tub he was so badly scalded that he had a terrible time in walking back to his home. His son―Il-Sun―thought it necessary have him moved into the hospital. He is getting over it―but the accident might have been almost fatal.

9. 1월 9일

30
9th. Tuesday. Bright. Very cold. 17° below zero.

31
Seoul home. The coldest day we have had this winter so far. 9:30 went to the office of the Governor of Kyong Ki Province to receive an Imperial gift of ¥300.00 for the Seoul Orphanage(京城保育院) . This gracious gift is given on account of the famine. The Old Women's Home and the East Gate Infants' Home were also given ¥200.00 each. We all are really thankful for this Imperial benevolence.

10. 1월 10일

33
10th. Wednesday. Lovely. Icy cold.

34
Seoul home. A little milder than yesterday. 10:30 wife, Grace, Bong Sup and I went to Severance Hospital to see cousin Chi-Oh and Pastor Kim Yung Sup. The latter had a very serious accident a few days ago. Trying to hold a man who was falling from the roof of the Church, Kim fell on a flower pot which had sharp bamboo sticks on the seat of his pants. One of the bamboo sticks pierced through the □□, an inch deep. The suffering must be great.

11. 1월 11일

36
11th. Thursday. Cloudy.

37
Seoul home. From early morning fine grained snow―like granulated sugar―fell on and off all day long. Then from 5 to 8 snow enough to cover the ground a fraction of inch thick. 4:30 went to Chosun Hotel to see Han Won Hie(韓元姬) , the daughter of Han Sang Uk(韓相億) . The girl is to betrothed to Yong Koo, the eldest son of Candler. She is on her maternal side, the granddaughter of General Cho Dong Yun(趙東潤) .
38
Mr. 由上 (Yu kami) one of the two permanent managers of the 國精總動聯盟(常務理事) retiring all of a sudden from his position left Seoul per Akatsuki 4 p.m.
39
By invitation of Mr. Kasaya, had supper at Keijo Y. with Messrs. Niwa and Tagawa M.P. The letter is returning to Tokyo from Peking.

12. 1월 12일

41
12th. Friday. Cloudy a.m.

42
Seoul home. Last evening, Mr. Tagawa talked rather freely. He said it is a mistake on the part of the Japanese people to think they can win the good will of America apart from England as England and America are inseparable. Besides it is easier to come to a compromise with England whose immense stake in China makes her anxious to come to terms with Japan while America stands on abstract principles of humanity and treaty obligations. The Blockade of Tientsin was unwise and inhuman, thinks this M.P. Even the Japanese leaders there admit that the English people have shown themselves ("yerai") great under the humiliating circumstances of the blockade. The silver deposits in Tientsin Banks are regarded by the English as the property of Chiang K.S. while the Japanese contend that they belong to the New Political Regime. A plan of compromise is to be materialized soon, in reality, to the victory of the English side. Tagawa further said the military situation in the occupied areas is not as happy as one wishes. A year ago he made the trip from 石家莊 to 太原 in 12 hours. Last December a Japanese gentleman had to make the trip in 22 days. Even Wang Kuk Min, the Chief of the New Regime told Tagawa that Japan hasn't conquered. The M.P. is certain that the present Cabinet will resign in a few days. General Ukaki is the most popular man.

13. 1월 13일

44
13th. Saturday. Foggy a.m. Mild.

45
Seoul home. 3-5 p.m. the Patrons' Association of the Women's Normal Primary School gave a farewell reception in honor of 鄭先生 who is retiring after a service of 18 years. ¥500.

14. 1월 14일

47
14th. Sunday. Lovely. Icy cold.

48
Seoul home. Invited Hong Pyong Sun and his wife to a light lunch at Mitsukoshi. He had just returned from a trip to Peking.
49
The Abe Cabinet resigned today. Since the Chinese Incident began three Cabinets have come and gone in 2 years and half. The gallantship of state of Japan seems to have no able helmsman. The militarists who have taken into their iron hands the reins of Government on the ground that the Political Parties were corrupt and inefficient, haven't produced a commanding figure who may compel implicit obedience of everybody civil or military. I hope the next Cabinet will be able to bring the Chinese Incident to a reasonably satisfactory conclusion―that may justify to the great Japanese nation the terrible sacrifice which it has made and is making since the 5th July, 1937.

15. 1월 15일

51
15th. Monday. Lovely. Icy cold.

52
Seoul home 9:30 a.m. to C.L.S. Board Room where the Methodist Central Council met to meet Bishop Moore. From 10:30 to 12:30 the various "Anti"―organizations held a Union Review at the Seoul Stadium in the presence of the Governor General and other important officials of the Police and of the Army. Very cold.
53
A new Cabinet is reported to have been formed in Tokyo with Admiral Kome nai(米內海軍大將) at its head.

16. 1월 16일

55
16th. Tuesday. Lovely―Mild.

56
Seoul home. A Cabinet with 14 Ministers has been formed and received the Imperial appointments this morning. Of the 14 members of the new Cabinet three are well known in Korea. Count Kodama was one time the Civil Administrator under Admiral Saito. He enters the cabinet as the Minister of Home Affairs. General Koiso, the new Minister of the Colonial Affairs was the Commander-in-Chief of the Army of Korea before the present General Nakamura. The New Minister of Education Matsu-ura was once the Chancelor of the Keijo Imperial University. The new Cabinet seems to stand on a broader basis than the last one since it has in its personnel, four leaders of the great political parties. I do hope the new Cabinet will be able to extricate Japan from the difficult Chinese situation so as to give peace to Japan not only but to the whole East.

17. 1월 17일

58
17th. Wednesday. Bright. Cold.

59
Seoul home.

18. 1월 18일

61
18th. Thursday. Lovely―Icy cold.

62
Seoul home. Small-pox epidemic starting in Ham Kyong Province some weeks ago is spreading all over the Peninsula. As everybody in our household has to be vaccinated wife and other urged me to be vaccinated along with them. A man of my age doesn't need one but as a fun I submitted to the infection.

19. 1월 19일

64
19th. Friday. Lovely. But cold. 15° below zero.

65
Seoul home. 4 p.m. Governor GeneralMinami entertained Bishop Moore and all the Methodist Missionaries to a tea party at the new residence. Bishop Jung Choon Sou, Dr. Ryang and I were also invited.

20. 1월 20일

67
20th. Saturday. Lovely―Bitter cold. 17° below.

68
Seoul home. This bitter cold is hard enough; but the thing that scare us most is this dreaded drought. We suffered so horribly from a rain-less summer and autumn. Now we are having a snow-less winter making everybody uneasy about the farming conditions of the coming spring and summer. My friend Kim Sang Kyo believes that Heaven is using the wars and famine to reduce the excessive increase of population of the world. But it passes my ken and strains. My faith in a all-loving and all wise and all powerful God that He should resort to such brutal methods to keep population within its bounds. No wise and good man would do it.

21. 1월 21일

70
21st. Sunday. Lovely. Bitter cold.

71
Seoul home. My vaccination works to the surprise of all. Feel feverish. Has to stay in bed.

22. 1월 22일

73
22nd. Monday. Pale sun. Cold.

74
Seoul home. It is almost incredible to me that such intelligent and well informed leaders in the Imperial Army of Japan should have started the gigantic campaigns in China with all their complex possibilities of world-wide conflagrations without more adequate preparations not for 2 or 3 years but for at least 10 years. In the short space of 2 1/2 years Japan is short not only in war materials―like iron, gasoline, rubber, etc.―but in drugs indispensable to doctors and hospitals, in matches and charcoal. Yet some war-writers preach that we must carry on the war for 100 years!

23. 1월 23일

76
23rd. Tuesday. Bright. Bitter cold. 16° below.

77
Seoul home. Wife tells me with evident envy that Dr. Koo Yung Sook gave his wife a fur coat worth ¥1,000.00 and ¥500.00 in cash to take a regular hot spring tour from place to place. I don't blame Koo to send his wife to hot springs but I do think he was unwise to give her such an expensive fur coat when millions of poor Koreans have nothing to eat but grass roots in this dreadful winter. These women turn deaf ears to all appeals to humanity in this war-cussed and famine stricken world as long as their ease and vanity are satisfied.

24. 1월 24일

79
24th. Wednesday. Bright. Cold.

80
Seoul home. This morning about 9 cousin No. 4 Chi-Byong passed away. He had been sick for a year-probably from the deadly effects of opium and morphine to which he was one time addicted and from which he was rescued, perhaps imperfectly. I don't suppose anybody will miss him as he had been a burden even to his good wife.

25. 1월 25일

82
25th. Thursday. Lovely. Bitter cold. 16° below zero.

83
Seoul home. This morning Mr. Yu Uk Kyum called and informed me that the Chief of the Public Safety Section of the Government General had told Paik Kwan Soo, President of Dong-A-Il-Po Company to discontinue the paper before the 11th February without giving any reason for this drastic act. The Dong-A-Il-Po people asked me, through Yu, to see General Minami begging him not to kill the paper. I told Yu that I don't know the General well enough to approach him on such delicate subject. But I promised I would see first the Private SecretaryKondo and ask him to deliver my petition to the General. At 2 I called on Mr. Kondo and told him to beg His Excellency not to discontinue the poor paper unless it is regarded as harmful to the administration or unless its discontinuance is a part of the settled policy of the Government.

26. 1월 26일

85
26th. Friday. Bright―Bitter cold.

86
Seoul home. Yesterday afternoon Koo Ja Ok brought me ¥1,000.00 as payment of the sum which he had borrowed from me some 13 years ago. He is one in a hundred who is honest enough to pay his debt to me. He owed me another little sum, ¥120.00 besides the interest on the thousand Yen, which couldn't be less than ¥700.00. But I took only ¥500.00 and gave him back the balance viz. ¥500.00. I also cancelled the interest and the other debt.

27. 1월 27일

88
27th. Saturday. Bright. Bitter cold.

89
Seoul home. From 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Citizens' Hall where five volunteers just returned from the battle fronts in Shan-Si Province of North China were entertained to a luncheon. From 1 to 4:30 the young men addressed a house packed to overflowing with middle school and college students. The returned soldiers' personal experience―their hardships and triumphs―was very inspiring. With good training and able leadership Korean young men will make good soldiers. They don't need better teachers than the Japanese warriors.

28. 1월 28일

91
28th. Sunday. Bright. Bitter cold.

92
Seoul home.

29. 1월 29일

94
29th. Monday. Bright. Bitter cold.

95
Seoul home. 4 p.m. attended the farewell service for cousin Chi-Byong, Rev. Koo Sung Suh in delivering an obituary address he extol our cousin No.4 as an exemplary person in filial piety, in fraternal love and in Christian piety. Obituary addresses and tomb-stones enjoy the uncontested privilege of over praising the dead, but Pastor Koo did it a little too much.

30. 1월 30일

97
30th. Tuesday. Bright. Bitter cold.

98
Seoul home. 6:30 a.m. went to cousin No.4 (Chi-Byong) 's home. His coffin left the house forever for the station at 7:30. The weather so bitterly cold and I felt so unwell that I could not go to burial service to be held at cousin No. 2's family cemetery in Pyong Taik county.

31. 1월 31일

100
31st. Wednesday. Cloudy. Bitter cold.

101
Seoul home. Cloudy giving hope that we might have some snow at last. But not a flake of it―this dreadful dry and bitter cold is deadly to the tender blades of barley.
