1. 11월 1일

2
1st. Friday. Lovely.

3
Seoul home. At 11 attended the 40th Anniversary of the Founding of the First Higher Common School(第一高等普通學校) now re-named the Kyong-ki Public Middle School(京畿公立中學校) . The program was long and elaborate. This school has a warm place in my heart because our 璋善 and 琦善 both graduated from this institution.
4
I was touched to see Prof. Wada(和田英正) the former Principal of the school under whom our two boys had studied, who had come from Tokyo to attend the celebration.

2. 11월 2일

6
2nd. Saturday. Lovely.

7
Seoul home. 4 p.m. the Executive Committee of the Korean Council of Y.M.C.A.'s met at Keijo Y. to arrange program for the coming General Meeting of the Council on the 23rd inst.
8
6 p.m. we gave a farewell supper in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Barnhart who are to leave Korea in a few days.
9
Two Hundred and fifty Americans are to leave Korea soon for America.

3. 11월 3일

11
3rd. Sunday. Cloudy.

12
Seoul home. 3:50 p.m. Prof. Wada(和田英正) left Seoul for Tokyo. Kim Ok Kyo(金玉嬌) that clever and attractive proprietor of Chun Hyang Won Restaurants, told me that Wada lives in Tokyo in very destitute condition.
13
A few days ago Jung Koo(鼎求) , second son of Candler trying to shoot a sparrow by accidence hit his little sister, Sung Hie, the tiny bullet from the toy shotgun passing through the lower part of her left eye-lid, barely missing her apple of the eye, was lodged on the left side of her nose. She has been placed in the Government Hospital.

4. 11월 4일

15
4th. Monday. Very warm.

16
Seoul home. 1:45 p.m. Barnhart and his wife and Children left Seoul for America. These good people have been in Korea for 25 years giving these time and service to the Y.M.C.A. work. Sorry to see them go and go under circumstances not altogether pleasant. Hope better times may come soon so that all nations may live more like brothers than armed foes.
17
Chi-Yung insists that he has a secret information to the effect that Horace Underwood is soon to leave Korea. Mrs. Underwood told me that her husband wasn't going to leave. Chi-Yung often retails some funny informations!

5. 11월 5일

19
5th. Tuesday. Pretty―Very warm.

20
Seoul home. Too warm for this time of the year.
21
In 1910 I went to Edinburgh to attend the World Missionary Conference. A Dr. White, at a luncheon given in a large auditorium to the delegates representing a score of nations, wasted nearly an hour in eulogizing the achievements of the Anglo-Saxon nations―England and America. It was very ungentlemanly on the part of the old fellow to indulge in such vulgar jingoism. Hitler will have done one good thing in the world if he succeeds in punching a big hole in the arrogance―ballon of the Anglo-Saxon pride―of the coarse Kipling type.

6. 11월 6일

23
6th. Wednesday. Rain.

24
Seoul home. Rain from midnight until 9 this morning.
25
Well Roosevelt is re-elected the 3rd term President of the United States. I hope he will keep America out of the war.
26
By aid of Xray the bullet was taken out of Sung Hie's nose―between her left eye-lid and the upper side of her nose. She is doing well.

7. 11월 7일

28
7th. Thursday. Lovely. Cold.

29
Seoul home. The Japanese military and police authorities regards all missionaries in Korea as spies and the Koreans who associate with them as the agents of American espionage. The West Gate police told Dr. Kim Helen that in so many plain words. They think or pretend to think that Americans have no reason to give so many hundreds of thousand Yen to the Korean Christians except for spying out the military secrets of the land. Four men from the British Bible Society have been locked in the police jails for more than a month for no other crime than that they are in the employ of foreigners.
30
Thus the American missionaries have to quit Korea just to save the Koreans from being molested. Besides the American Government for reasons best know to themselves, have issued orders to American citizens to evacuate from China, Japan and Korea―as fast as they can get boat accommodations.

8. 11월 8일

32
8th. Friday. Lovely. Cold. Freezing.

33
Seoul home. All jewellery shops were closed from yesterday. No article made of silver can be manufactured or sold from now on.

9. 11월 9일

35
9th. Saturday. Lovely. Cold.

36
Seoul home. Hugh Cynn who started the Positive League some years ago to make himself a Mussolini or Hitler in the Korean churches is busy plotting to carry his designs into effect by the help of the scoundrel Jung Hoon in the army intelligence dept. and of the Higher Police Section of the Kyong Ki Province. Rumor goes the round that Cynn is plotting to make his concubine Pak In Duk, the Principal of Ewha College.

10. 11월 10일

38
10th. Sunday. Pale sun. Cold.

39
Seoul home. Today the Japanese Empire from Safalin to Formosa; from Hok Kai Do to the extreme North of Korea; from Harbin to Hanoi is celebrating the 26th Centennial(二千六百年祭) of the Founding of the Japanese Empire. It is certainly a wonderful fact that one Dynasty has kept the throne for over 20 centuries.
40
From 9 a.m. to 11, an impressive celebration at the Chosun Shrine.
41
At 1 p.m. another celebration at Kyong Hoi Ru.

11. 11월 11일

43
11th. Monday. Pale sun.

44
Seoul home. The Kim Chi making season has begun. We have to pay ¥18.00 for 100 heads of cabbages―or 3 times as much as we paid last year. ¥7.00 for 10 turnips(菁根) .
45
Koo Ja Ok realizing his inability to cope with the insubordinate members of his staff and to meet the demands of times gave me a written resignation the other day. I hope the Board of Directors will accept it. But who is to succeed him? Yu Ok Kyum is probable candidate but I fear he will plunge the Central Y. into a whirlpool of warfare between Hong and his supporters and Yu and his friends. Yu is a strong man but he doesn't know how to win the good will of his subordinates. I would like to see Hyon Dong Wan to take the place, but he will not get the unanimous votes. Cousin Chi-Yung is another possible candidate.

12. 11월 12일

47
12th. Tuesday. Cloudy.

48
Seoul home. In spite of General Minami's assertion that he wouldn't resign Chi-Yung retailed the rumor that Minami is sure to be re-leaved of his office inside of this month and that his successor is to be General Abe. I record this just to test how correct Chi-Yung's information is.

13. 11월 13일

50
13th. Wednesday. Rain―Cloud―Sun.

51
Seoul home. Drizzling rain from 9 last night to 9 this morning. Cloud and sun alternately most of the day.
52
3:23 p.m. train for Ewha College where the Executive Committee of the Board met to hear Dr. Kim Helen's report about the Zai-Dan-Ho-jin application for the Kyongki Provincial permit. The object of Hojin charter reads to be "to educate Korean women on the basis Christian principles in accordance with the Educational Ordinances of the Government General. The authorities insist that the words Christian principles should be eliminated while Miss Appenzeller maintain they should stand. Dr. Kim thinks even if the authorities were to permit the Christian principles stand today, they will surely order its erasure later on. She wants Dr. Appenzeller make that point plain to the people of the Mission Board.
53
From 6 a farewell Korean supper was served in honor of Miss Appenzeller, Miss Young and other lady-missionaries who are to leave for America in a few days. So sorry to see Miss Appenzeller go!

16. 11월 16일

61
16th. Saturday. Pale sun.

62
Seoul home. Per 8:45 a.m. train 250 Americans mostly missionaries and Methodists evacuated their Korean homes, schools, hospitals etc. for Chemulpo where an American steamer will take them home. Wife, Grace, Laura and I went to Station to see some of them off. We were really and sincerely sorry to see Miss Alice Appenzeller leave and leave under circumstances which nobody ever dreamt of 50 years ago. So far as I am concerned I am getting too old to hope to see her again in this world. God be with her and Miss Young!

22. 11월 22일

79
22nd. Friday. Lovely.

23. 11월 23일

82
23rd. Saturday. Cloudy.

83
Seoul home. Keijo Hotel at noon to attend the wedding ceremony of Dr. Yu Hong Jong's daughter.
84
2 p.m. the Biennial Meeting of the Korean Council of Y.M.C.A. was held at the Keijo Y. building. Before regular meeting began the whole body of delegates about 50 in all marched with a brass-band to the Chosun Shrine to pay our respect to the Shrine. Returning to the Y. we started the meeting from 4 p.m. Routine work all passed off smoothly and we had supper together.
85
Mr. Kasaya of the Keijo Y. is a Japanese edition of A.W. Wasson―to my mind. Kasaya is an energetic and able man. He alone does more work and better work than 6 Koreans secretaries under Koo Ja Ok does in the Central Y.Koo Ja Ok is clinging to Kasaya as a frightened child does to the apron of its mother. Koo certainly cuts a contemptible figure. He has neither the dignity to inspire respect from his subordinates nor the personal magnetism to win their good will. He is dispised and hated.

24. 11월 24일

87
24th. Sunday. Lovely.

88
Seoul home. Invited Mr. Nagai of the Tokyo Y.M.C.A. to breakfast at Chosun Hotel. With him I invited Messrs. Niwa, Kasaya, Hanamura and Koo Ja Ok.

25. 11월 25일

90
25th. Monday. Dull sun a.m. Cold.

91
Seoul home. A Government authority tells us that the rice crop of Japan Proper is a little over 64,000,000 "koku" this year, while the yield of miscellaneous cereals(雜穀) is so poor that there is absolutely no hope of Korea getting any of them. Japan Proper is 20,000,000 "koku" short of rice supply for the coming year. Korea which has produced barely enough rice this year to supply its home demand for next year, will have been squeezed to make up at least a good part of the Japan's shortage. In order to do this every providence, every country nay every village has turned protectionist. For instance I can't get my own rice from South Choong Chung Province for my own use. Nor can I sell my rice to anybody except to the Public or Government Purchasing Agency at "nailed-down" price viz: ¥21.90 per "kamani" when the market price is ¥30.00 or more. People in desperation pay ¥35.00 or even ¥40 per "kama" in secret. The great bother is the Government Purchasing Agency doesn't or can't pay the price at once. You have to wait 10 to 20 days or even two or three months to get debts. But banks wouldn't lend. What does this all mean?

26. 11월 26일

28. 11월 28일

99
28th. Thursday. Pale sun.

100
Seoul home. Wife, 文姬, 恩姬, and her two children and I went to Ewha College by 11:30 a.m. train to see our 寶姬. Miss Helen Kim gave us a good lunch and fine coffee. I missed Miss Appenzeller. The whole place didn't look natural without her.

29. 11월 29일

102
29th. Friday. Pale sun. Chilly.

103
Seoul home. 8:30 p.m. went to Seoul Station to see off a bunch of volunteers leaving Seoul for Chung-Jin.
104
Myong Sun from Manchuria called near 11. He told me people in Shin King and other cities of Manchuria suffer from shortage of cereals and coal as badly as we do in Korea. Manchu boys in the military school complain they are fed on "ko-ryang" while Japanese boys are given rice. The Manchus are not very well pleased with the Shinto Shrine that has been forced on the Emperor of Manchu kuo. Strange so intelligent Japanese Statesmen should do such unnecessary things to hurt the feelings of the Manchurians.

30. 11월 30일

106
30th. Saturday. Bright. Cold.

107
Seoul home. 5:30 p.m. went to Keijo Y.M.C.A. where a supper was given to Mr. Saito of Tokyo Y. National Council who is paying us a flying visit on his way to Harbin.
