Accepting Dr. Oh's invitation, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Ludlow at Chosun Hotel 12:30. Messrs. Niwa and Ota were also present. Dr. Ludlow is on a flying visit to Korea. Sorry to see him come back to the scenes of his work a widower. He says his consolation is that she is always with him in spirit and that he will be with her when he dies. That's the beauty of religion.

Cousin Chi-Yung retailed the rumor that General Minami is to be relieved of his Governorship by the end of October and that such leaders like Usami, Sekiya, Maruyama, Tanaka, Sakatani, Yu-asa, Kodama, Mizuno are positively opposed to forcing on the Koreans the Japanese names. Yet Chi-Yung reports that something like 300 students or young men have been put in West Gate Police Station for opposing or telling their fathers to oppose the Japanization of their names. These rumors don't dovetail into each other. For if the opposition is so strong in Tokyo as to make the official standing of the Governor-General and of the Vice Governor shaky they wouldn't have let the police molest the young men for objecting the Japanese names.

Papers report that France or the French Government now under the thumb of Germany has broken off diplomatic relations with England, the immediate cause being the English attack on that part of French navy which had been stationed at an Algerian harbor for not surrendering to the English fleet. Remarkable that all countries which relied more or less on the might of England have succumbed to Hitler or Stalin or Mussolini, as witness Ethiopia, Austria, Czecho, Poland, the Scandinavian States. Finally France discovered the futility of depending on the English help. The proud Anglo-Saxon prestige has fallen low both in China and in Europe. It is said Hitler is planning to start a lightening strike on England on the 9th or 10th July.

Seoul home. Went to the Shrine where a Shinto thanksgiving service was held from 9:30 a.m. to commemorate the Third Anniversary of the Marco-polo Bridge day when famous China Incident happened. From 11 a mass celebration of the Day by the Civil and Military authorities and the citizens of the city.

Seoul home. I was invited to luncheon at Chosun Hotel by Mr. Kim Hai Chin 金海鎭, Mr. Choi-Rin, Han Sung Nim, and cousin Chi-Yung also present.

Called on Dr. Ryang this morning. We have to leave Seoul no later than the 15th for Tokyo. I certainly dislike going to the Tokyo lecture meeting. I don't care a rap either to hear any of lectures or to say anything. I have consented to go just to show the rulers that I am not shirking or evading to do what they want me do. Besides the only pleasure I hope to have in Tokyo is to be with our 璋善 and 琦善. But 璋善 writes me he is going to the Gliders' Camp from 11th to the end of July.

Seoul home. Bright sunshine a.m. With wife went to a place near East Gate to see a girl(李海男) whom a friend warmly recommended for the bride for our 璋善. We saw her as she came out of her house on her way to Sook Myung College. We didn't think she was pretty.

With Dr. Ryang left Seoul per 1:35 express for Tokyo. Good to see the paddy fields on both sides of the rail-road well watered. Arrived at Fusan 9:30. Went straight to the boat. 明燮 whom Allen had sent as far as Fusan returned to Seoul.

En-train. After a good rest reached Shimonoseki 7:15 a.m. Had breakfast at Sanyo Hotel and left the port for Kyoto 9:25 a.m. Hot and close in the cars. Arriving at Kyoto at 8:50 we put up at the Station Hotel and enjoyed the refreshing bath more than anything else.

Left Kyoto at 9:25 a.m. we arrived at Tokyo 5:30 p.m. Nobody at the Station to meet us, our 琦善 and 奉燮 had been misinformed of the hour of my arrival. Dr. Ryang and I went to the Y.M.C.A. Hostel in a taxi. He stopped off there and I went to our boys' lodging at Shibuya. On reaching the place found our 琦善 and 奉燮 had gone to the station. So I hurried to the station again to meet them! I met them there and returned to the lodging 7:30. All well, thank god. 璋善 had gone to the Glide Camp at Kiri-ga Mine.

Tokyo. Went to Tokyo Y. to meet Dr. Ryang. From there we went to San-kai-Do Building where the Oriental Cultural Society had their meetings. Dr. Ryang read a paper 11 a.m. on the Present Religious Condition of Korea. The audience being made up of the second generation of the Japanese emigrants to America these young boys and girls can't speak a word of Japanese, hence they don't know anything about Japan. These lectures are for their enlightenment, though it is doubtful any of them care much to hear about Korea.

After the service the officers of the church entertained us at a luncheon. Miss Kim In Sook embarrassed me by saying how I had helped her to get her Japanese education etc. I had forgotten all about it. She seems to be very energetic. She is managing a dormitory for poor students(girls) in Tokyo.

Dr. Ryang and I left Tokyo for Karuizawa per 10:55 a.m. train. After a tiresome ride up and up, through more than 20 tunnels, we arrived at the famous Karuizawa Summer Resort at 3 p.m.―the mountains most beautifully wooded. Pity the long drought has dried up all the streams.

We put up at the Man-pei Hotel―a clean and well-kept establishment. Had most refreshing bath.

Fortunately I was asked to speak at 8 tonight instead of 11 a.m. 24th, as the lady who had to talk on Manchuria tonight couldn't come on time. After supper Dr. Ryang and I went to the Hall and I read a paper on Annexation and Unification and the Koreans' Attitude. My audience was composed of six foreigners―of whom five were women―and 5 Japanese girls.

Miss Yoshiko Kami-ike(上池昌子) and her sister Masako(倭子) are two pretty girls. The older Yoshiko is 24 years old and is simply perfectly charming. The two dimples on her lovely cheeks everytime she smiles―and she smiles so―are perfectly captivating. She is young woman. She is in Tokyo to look after her sister Masako(倭子) . These girls are very kind to our boys.

7 p.m. by appointment I with 璋善, 琦善 and Kim Jong Chan called on General Anami(阿南 中將) , Vice Minister of War. Found him a fine looking man. He and his wife have been good to our boys. He is the patron of Kim Jong Chan, the painter. General Anami is the only man I have called on. I made up my mind not to call on even Usami and Sekiya because my movements are no doubt under strict surveillance.

Kim Jong Chan told me that a couple of Korean young men had come to him a night or two ago saying that the Dong-A-Il-Po and the Chosun Il-Po are to be discontinued on the 10th August. The young men wailed "ai-go" "ai-go" pounding on the floor. Fools Korean students wailed "ai-go" and "ai-go" pounding on floor etc. when Korea was annexed. What could wailing and pounding on floor do? Kim told me further that these young Koreans demanded more sake and he had to spend ￥5.00 treat them!
