1st. Thursday. Cloudy a.m.

Tokyo. Henchman Lodging. Lunch at Tokyo Grill as usual with my boys. Left the Lodging at 9 p.m. for Tokyo Station. The train for Shimonoseki left the Station at 11 p.m. It was hard for me to leave our 琦善. I hope 奉燮 will take good care of him. Happy that 璋善 is going with me. Some impressions of Tokyo.
4
During the two weeks I had only one shower. The Shibuya ditch has not water enough to wash off the dirty refuses that have been dumped into it. It was impossible to get taxis where we were.
5
There are no morning public baths in Tokyo. Two years ago the bath house opened from noon. Last year no public bath available until 2 p.m. The same this summer. The great city is suffering from lack of water and coal. No white rice is allowed to be served from 1st. August.
7
2nd. Friday. Cloudy. Close.
8
En-train. Had a good rest last night. When we reached the Maibara Station Miss Kami-ike Masako(上池倭子) came to see us with her father from their home at Taka(多賀) . She is a lovely girl. They must have left their home before 7 to get to Maibara 8:33 a.m. So good of them. When we got to Kyoto at 9:47 Miss Kami-ike Yoshiko(上池昌子) waited for us at the Station. She is a bewitchingly charming woman! I can't understand why the Kami-ike's are so good to us. I thank them.
10
3rd. Saturday. Cloudy.
11
Last evening we arrived at Shimonoseki at 9. Went on board of the Ko-an-maru at once and left the port at 11:30. After a good night's rest we reached Fusan at 6 a.m. Got on the Super-Extra, Akatsuki which left Fusan 7:05 a.m. Arrived at Seoul Station 1:47 p.m. Wife and children met us at the Station. Sorry to hear Allen had gone to Song Do sick.
12
Thank God my trip to and from Tokyo has been on the whole pleasant―my greatest pleasure being to have been with our boys in Tokyo for near two weeks.
14
4th. Sunday. Cloudy a.m. Sun p.m.
15
Seoul home. Took lunch at Mitsukosh Restaurant with wife, 璋善, 珽善, 寶姬, 明姬. The food has become very poor already.
17
5th. Monday. Cloudy a.m. Sun p.m.
18
Seoul home. 8:30 a.m. with 寶, 瑛, 珽, 鄭淳□ and 羅□□, went to Pu-am-Jung outside the North Gate. I had a good nap and the children had good time among the beautiful trees. Returned home 6:30 p.m.
20
6th. Tuesday. Cloudy with showers.
21
Seoul home. Called on Mr. O-ta at 8:30 a.m. Also on Mr. Tanaka, Vice Director Foreign Section and reported what I did in Tokyo and Karuizawa.
22
Left Seoul 9:20(8:05 train late) for Song Do. Arriving at Song Do about 11:30 went right to Dr. Huh's hospital to see Allen. Poor fellow, he has been so worried by Candler's debt affairs trying to meet all the heavy obligations by borrowing money from banks etc. Candler doesn't seem to show any regret or repentance.
23
With Laura and Mrs. Hong took lunch at a Chinese restaurant and again at Candler's concubine's home. Returned Seoul 4:35 train.
25
7th. Wednesday. Cloudy. Almost too cool.
26
Seoul home. It is reported that England has promised to grant to India the Dominion status after the present war. Who will believe what England says today? In last world war England made to India identically the same promise. The great Ghandi believing that England would abide by her promise went all over India persuading his compatriots to give money and men to help England win the war. So did India. After the war was over England ate her promise and the only answer she gave to India was the infamous Amitgar Massacre, England is simply “China in Europe" in tolerably proud, slow and powerless.
28
8th. Thursday. Cloudy. Cool.
29
Seoul home. This morning by 10:20 train wife and 光鉉 went to Song Do to see Allen.
30
璋善 and 珽善 went to Chemulpo for sea-bathing. Returned home 6 p.m.
31
Wife returned home 7:30 and reports that Allen was no better.
33
9th. Friday. Pale sun. Warm.
34
Seoul home. Almost too cool for this time of the year at both ends of the day.
35
6 p.m. went to the Citizens' Hall to see the last Berlin Olympia on the screen. It was a magnificent sight. The picture appealed to no Koreans most because the winners of the 1st and 2nd Marathon prizes were Koreans―Sohn and Nam. What a pity Hitler didn't keep on building up international peace and good will by devoting his wonderful energies and the vast treasure and human life to works of peace instead of wasting them on wanton destructive wars! To protect the honor and integrity of Germany! How about the honor of integrity of the small nations which he has so ruthlessly destroyed?
37
10th. Saturday. Cloudy. Heat.
38
Left Seoul 10:20 a.m. for Song Do. Arriving there about 10:30 went straight to Koryu Hospital to see Allen. Laura told me that Allen had a good sleep last night but that he is very irritative. Dr. Kim Pyong Sun said the temperature which rose to 39.9 two days ago came down to 37.5 this morning. Returned to Seoul by 4:35 p.m. train.
40
11th. Sunday. Clean sunshine.
41
Seoul home. A beautiful day after so many days of gloom.
42
The two Korean vernacular papers 東亞日報 and Chosen Il Po(朝鮮日報) published their last farewell sheets last evening. The discontinuance of these papers must produce a profound sensation of sorrow in the hearts of the Korean population. But these are strenuous times of hardships and the authorities must have very good reasons for suppressing these papers. (1) To economize paper; (2) to encourage the spread of papers in Japanese; (3) to eradicate any lingering sense of Korean nationalism.
44
12th. Monday. Cloudy. Sultry.
45
Seoul home. Went to Buk-Moon-Sa Temple to attend the last farewell service held in honor of Mr. Min Pyong Suk who died in Tokyo a few days ago. Long meaningless eulogistic obituary addresses were read which nobody cared to hear.
