1. 8월 1일

2
1st. Friday. Beautiful a.m. Cloudy.

3
Seoul home. 6 a.m. went to Tai Wha Social Centre to attend the Patriotic Class. Nearly a thousand people―men, women, children―came to the meeting.
4
Went to C.C.C. per 11 a.m. train. Rained a little between 1 and 2 p.m.

2. 8월 2일

6
2nd. Saturday. Cloudy most of the day.

7
Seoul home. At 11 a.m. Miss Helen Kim, Mr. 徐斗沬 and I called on the Chief of the Educational Section(學敎課長) to ask him to grant the formation of the Ewha Zai Dan Hojin as soon as possible in order to transfer the ownership of the College property from an American citizen―Miss Appenzeller―to a Japanese subject.
8
From 2 to 7 p.m. wife and I spent the day at our new home―the beautiful Chui Woon Jung. I feel like living in a dream, when I think of what may happen to Seoul and to us all in case the impending clash between Japan and Russia or Japan and America or both becomes actual event in a few days.

3. 8월 3일

10
3rd. Sunday. Brilliant and hot.

11
Seoul home. Our 琦善 and 英求 returned to Seoul by airplane. Thank God they are back safe and sound.

4. 8월 4일

13
4th. Monday. Sun a.m. Showers p.m.

14
Seoul home. By appointment Messrs. 曺秉相, 朴興植, 高元勳, 閔圭植, 金秊洙 and I met at 4 p.m. in the Social Room of the Wha-shin Dept. Store. We discussed what we Koreans should or might do to show to our Japanese friends that we are not indifferent or apathetic in these days when our Empire is in a death-and-life struggle for the establishment of a New-Order in the Orient.
15
We finally agreed to call on General Kishikawa, the Vice Governor of Korea and General Minami to ask their advice and suggestions. By the way Messrs. 金□□, 鄭僑厚 and 桂□□ present also in the meeting.

5. 8월 5일

17
5th. Tuesday. Rain most of the day.

18
Seoul home. Went to C.C.C. per 7:48 train to have a chat with Mr. Matsumoto, Mr. Chey S.J. and Yu O.K. on the financial situation of the College. Decided to call a meeting of the Finance Committee.
19
2 p.m. with 韓相龍, 朴興植, 曺秉洙, 金秊洙, 閔圭植, 高元勳 called on General Kishikawa, the Director of the National Strength Mobilization to ask him what we should do to show our patriotic zeal in these super-extraordinary times. At 3 we called on the Vice-Governor for the same purpose. Both gentleman promised they would consider carefully what might be the best we could do to awaken the youths of Korea to the present day situations.

6. 8월 6일

21
6th. Wednesday. Rain all last night.

22
Seoul home. Went to C.C.C. to attend a meeting of the Fiance Committee. Dr. Ryang, Mr. Niwa, 金星權, Miller, Koons, 崔淳植, Matsumoto, Yu O.K. The freezing of alien property in America cuts off the possible receipt of ¥60,000.00 from the College budget. Probably the Dai-Ichi Bank will refuse to give us any loan on the ground or pretax that the C.C.C. Zai Dan is American property. The financial prospect of the College is dark in the extreme. The misery is Yu O.K. in making out the budget built a profuse expenditure on more or less ghost receipts such as the dividends from America, donations from 後援會 to be organized etc. etc. etc.
23
Vigorous showers now and then. With Messrs. 韓, 曺, 金, 高, 朴, 閔 called on General Minami asking his advise what we ought to do for the country.

27

"By all means marry. If you get a good wife you will become very happy; if you get a bad one, you will become a philosopher―and that is good for every man" said Socrates. If that's true I am or ought-to-be one of the greatest philosophers in the world.

12. 8월 12일

42
12th. Tuesday. Misty rain now and then.

43
Seoul home. The Japanese troops, marines, planes are somewhere where the Siamese border-line meets that of Malay Peninsula. The Australian and British soldiers and Chiang's troops 300,000, strong are reported to be amassed near the Japanese forces. An Anglo-Japanese clash is imminent. America will join in the frag on the English side. Japan may have to fight the united forces of Britain, America and Holland in the South and Russia and America in the North over and above her never-ending war against Chiang Kai Sik. I hope Japan is too wise to do so.

Just two months since Hitler opened fire on Stalin, Odessa reported to have fallen day or two ago. Leningrad and Moscow still to be captured. Will that end Hitler's campaign in Russia? America seems fast approaching the psychological moment when war will declared against Hitler. Why should America join in the hellish war? The crafty diplomacy of Britain has cajoled a dozen states into hopeless struggle against Germany to their ruination. America ought to stay neutral prepared to play a part as peace maker.
