Wife's condition has grown a little worse. 光鉉 brought a woman from Pyong Yang who is reported to have faith or power to cure diseases by laying hand on the affected parts and by praying over. I don't believe it but have to tolerate it just to give wife comfort.

Today being the anniversary of In-Ho's birthday I went to his home at 12. After taking lunch I returned home feeling a touch of "momsal." Took a-bed.

Seoul home. Confined to my room with a bad cold. Wife's condition is becoming hourly serious. Just after midnight wife said to the weeping children: (1) 아버지 잘 보아 드려라. (Take good care of your father) . (2) 寶姬, 瑛姬, 시집 잘 보내주어라. (see to it that Po Hui and Yung Hui get well married) (3) 무엇이던지 독갓치 논하 가저라. (Divide every thing among you equally.)

Wife's condition critical. Early this morning I held her hand and said (엄마 나 알아 보것소) "Omma, do you know me?" She nodded her head. Our boy 珽善 held her hand and asked “어머니 珽善이요”(Mother, I am Jung Suni) She with touching aridity passes her hand over his cheeks saying 珽善이야? (Are you Jung Suni?) and trying to weep but couldn't. It was a heart rending scene:

About 3:30 p.m. wife passed her two arms around my neck and pressed my face against her cheeks for a minute or two. This was the sweetest and most affectionate thing she had ever done to me. Everybody around her was moved to tears.

Jung Hui(貞姬) , Candler's second was married to Chai Tong Kyu at 2 p.m. Wife's sickness prevented us from attending the wedding ceremony.

Wife lost consciousness from early morning. She passed quietly into eternity at 3:15-20 p.m. No more pains, fears, anxieties in this Hitler cursed world. The grief of the children was most affecting. About 10 in the night I touched, for the last time in this world, her hand as her life-less body lay in 건방 all shrouded in white hems and silk sheets. By the way exactly 39 years ago she came to me a bride of 16 to spend the first nuptial night in this very room.

Thank God, the day turned out to be unusually beautiful. The hearse and the family and friends in one sight-seeing bus(觀覽バス) and two taxies left Seoul home, 7:30 a.m. Arrived at Toon Po 屯浦 about 1:30, from where wife's remains were carried in Korean funeral chair while the mourners and friends had to foot it to the cemetery about 10 li. The burial service was held about 3. We left the new made grave and the precious remains of wife a little past 3:30 Left Toon Po for Seoul 4:30. The taxies had so many and long stops that we reached home about 10:30.

10 a.m. paid condolatory visit to the family of 元殷常, the 2nd brother of 元應常 and 元怠常·Mr. 元殷 常died the day before yesterday from same disease as that of wife.

Per the 8:50 a.m. North bound train (late 9:59) 璋善 and I went to Song Do to see and put things in order in our Song Do home. As everywhere else our Maria had everything in good shape. But I am afraid we shall lose every valuable thing in this empty house. Lunch at Allen's home. Returned to Seoul per 5:30 p.m. train.

10:30 a.m. came to 翠雲亭. My 梅麗 had visited this home sometime last summer―for the last time. It pains me to see everything she had put in apple pie order. I built this house for her but she is gone! I found a pair of Korean "bosun" (socks) which her beautiful feet had worn in a drawer. This precious relic saddens as well as it comforts me as I press the pair socks to my bosom. Removed my things from 2nd floor to wife's lst floor rooms.

Now that wife is gone to her eternal rest whatever little frictions we had during the last 39 years are all buried forever with her precious remains while whatever lovable traits she had stay ingrained in my heart and affection.

When she came to me a pretty girl of sixteen in 1905 she was so pretty that Mrs. Hardie declared she was the prettiest Korean girl she had seen. She shared with me the vicissitudes of my stormy life for nearly 40 years. She gave me beautiful children 5 girls and 3 boys. It is a great comfort to record that her last days of months were affectionately nursed by Laura and her own daughters and that she quietly passed into the unseen world of spirits surrounded by all her children.

She was a wonderful efficient housekeeper. Her skill in sowing and cooking was marvelous. Her passion for flowers was one of her beautiful traits. Whatever plant she cared to pay attention to bloomed into lovely flowers―so much so that sometimes I thought if she stuck a walking cane into the ground and manured it in her way it would burst into blossoms.

She had a strong will and good common sense. A great pity it was she didn't like studying and reading. Had she been better equipped with modern education she could easily have been one of the leaders among Korean women.

I can't believe she is dead except in her body I love to believe that she is now hovering around and over us with purified affections. I want to find consolation in this belief from day to day until I join her beautiful spirit in that eternal world of peace where no Hitlers, Stalins, Marxes and their imitators can turn everything they touch into hell.
