溫陽溫泉. The enterprising Japanese have turned one of the ill kept watering places in Korea into one of the most attractive bathing resorts in the land. They mean to make this a paying centre near Seoul. They will succeed too. Fifteen years of constant improvements on the part of the Japanese. Not a single Korean inn one may consider neat or attractive. The man Yun Sung Paik, who has been running this inn(大成旅館) for the past ten years spends the money he makes in stock-gambling or in playing yangban. The Koreans have no desire to learn from others―except bad points.

Henry Dramond says that ill temper is the vice of the virtuous. When a virtuous person finds himself a slave of bad temper, he does his best to restrain it within bounds. But when a mean natured person―especially a woman―is a slave of ill temper simply there is no living with her.

10. 8월 10일

30
10th. Sunday. Sun. Heat.

31
Song Do home. Oh, the vileness and meanness of human nature! An Indian made the brazen assertion in the Chicago Parliament of Religions something like this: "It is sin to call you sinners, ye gods on earth". What a damned statement! Hinduism which invented a religion which sanctioned such diabolical institutions as the child marriage; the "sati"; the perpetual worse than death widowhood; the fearful iron-bound caste system, condemning 50 or more millions of human beings to untouchable generation after generation―a Hindu is the last man who can say that man is god on earth. However he is consistent if his conception of god doesn't rise higher than the evil natured man―we see everywhere.

11. 8월 11일

40
Song Do home. Papers report mercury at 99°3'F. in Seoul. A serious drought in the early Summer; then an unprecedented flood and typhoon all over the country. Then a furnace-like dry heat. Untempered by a drop of rain for three weeks―what's the matter?

14. 8월 14일

42
14th. Thursday. Sunny. Heat―unabated.

43
Song Do home.

15. 8월 15일

45

46
Song Do home. Left Song Do 6:15 a.m. for Seoul reaching home 8:30. Rain from the 長端 Station―say abut 6:30. Reaching Seoul heard it had rain hard from about 2 a.m. No rain from 11 a.m. Returned Song Do 4:30 p.m. train.
47
Mr. Nash got a letter from Mr. Herschleb calling him home on the ground (1) that he (Mr. N.) is reported to be unhappy in his work; (2) that he is out of harmony with the policy of the Koran National Council; (3) that he is not a trained rural worker. Nash is very indignant. He told me that he had slept two nights since he got the letter. He believes that his recall was put up or recommended by Mr. Cynn and Barnhart―by telling Mr. Herschleb lies about him. He thinks it was sneakish for Cynn to have plotted for his recall and then shove all the responsibility onto Mr. H. in New York; "I have never seen him(Cynn) to face a moral issue squarely during the nine years I have been associated with him." The trouble is that Mr. N. was asked by New York Committee to return on account of a shortage in the budget last April. Then he was asked to stay because his salary had been covered by a private subscription. This sudden recall following the recent visit of Cynn to America has stung N. to the quick.

50
Song Do home.

17. 8월 17일

52
17th. Sunday. Sun and cloud. Heat as usual―little breeze.

53
Song Do home. The Nash recall is a regretable affair. According to Cynn, he had intimated to Mr. Herschleb that Nash is not a good organizer, and that, if a foreign secretary is to be placed in one of the 5 regions of Y. work, he must be a man trained for rural work―which N. is not. Hence N's sudden recall. With all my admiration for Cynn's ability, I don't quite agree with him in that every American secretary should be sent home who is not perfectly fit for the work. I remember only too well there was a conspiracy against Frank Brockman years ago and no doubt the conspiracy might have succeeded but for the fact that F.B. had his powerful brother back of him. Even Mr. Yi S.C. was in the conspiracy. Barnhart has been time and again criticized as too coarse for his position―as successor of Mr. F.B. Nor did that good man, Mr. Gregg escape the ill opinion of some of the leading lights who thought he was good for nothing and that the Industrial Dept. would do better without him. I am decidedly opposed to these thoughtless plotters―everlasting plotters. To me all foreign missionaries who love his work and like the Koreans well enough to stay should be gratefully received and retained. We can't afford to do without the foreign secretary, or missionary.

18. 8월 18일

55
18th. Monday. Sun. Hot.

56
Song Do home.

19. 8월 19일

58
19th. Tuesday. Sunny. Hot.

59
Song Do home. Mr. 兪億兼 came and showed me copy of an open letter which Mr. Bunce of 咸興 had written to Mr. Herschleb, charging Mr. Cynn and Mr. Barnhart with having prejudiced the New York Committee, against Nash. As the Chairman of the National Council I had to write a letter to Mr. Bunce reminding him that an open letter was not the wisest means for expressing his opinions, as he is a member of the staff of the National Council.
60
I fear the 咸興 and 平壤 members of the National Council will take this opportunity to have an open quarrel with the Seoul members. The harm that will come from such a squabble will be far greater than any harm which Nash might be able to do by prejudicing the North-Western men against the Seoul people. The whole trouble is that some people can't rest contented without scheming and scheming. My position, as the chairman, is delicate between the two factions.
61
One of Cynn's objections to N. is, that the latter has been fanning the sectional sentiment of 平壤 etc. against Seoul.

20. 8월 20일

63
20th. Wednesday. Bright. Hot.

64
Left Song Do 6:15 a.m. for Seoul with 璋善 to leave Seoul tomorrow for 金剛山 or 內金剛 where the Y.M. and Y.W.C.A.'s are to hold their united Summer Conference.

21. 8월 21일

66
21st. Thursday. Showers. Pleasant.

67
Left Seoul 8:42 a.m. with 璋善 and Mr. 兪億兼 for the Diamond Mountains, R.R. to 鐵原; electric car to 末輝里 (4 hours ride) ; auto to □□□ 4:30 p.m. Wonderful and marvelous work on the part of the Japanese to have placed the famous 金剛山 within the reach of Seoul inside of 9 hours. I don't enjoy the visit for 3 reasons; 1st. This marvelous work has been done by the energy and efficiency and efforts of the Japanese and Japanese alone. 2nd. The ultimate object of this work is for the benefit and pleasure of the Japanese and not for the Koreans. 3rd. The Three-Ex. Policy will as ruthlessly carried out here as elsewhere in Korea. There is already talk that the Koreans(monks) are to be gradually expelled from the mountains, the Japanese Buddhists, hotel keepers, geishas and licensed women to populate the entire mountains in time(very short time I am afraid) . Against this energetic and aggressive invaders backed by the almighty capital and Government of Japan, what have you to resist them, but the shiftless, thoughtless and helpless Koreans who are doubly helpless because they are unable to help themselves and have no Government to help them.

74
Oppressed by the pessimistic thoughts―facts―recorded in the preceding pages I couldn't enjoy the conference or the beauties of the wonderful mountains.

24. 8월 24일

76
24th. Sunday. Cloudy. Pleasant.

77
Left Seoul 9:05 for Song Do. Showers now and then. Found all well. Thank God.

26th. Tuesday. Pretty. Hot mid-day.

Song Do and Seoul homes. Received a telegram from 尹鶴淳 saying 昌燮 had disappeared. Had to hurry to Seoul 11:25 a.m. train with 光善 reaching home about 2 p.m. 昌燮 to whom I gave a cheque for ¥777.55(第壹期學校費 for myself and 致旺) and ¥300.00 to be deposited to my current bank account to cover the outstanding cheques, put the whole amount ¥1,077.33 into pocket and disappeared leaving a note to 鶴淳 saying that he would make a success and repay the money or die, in case of die in case of die in case of failure. This is the 3rd time 昌燮 has run away with somebody else's money, only in former two instances, the money belonged to his brother 明燮. In both cases, once ¥100.00, and the second time ¥200.00. He was or let himself thought. As he didn't tough any of my money I thought he was reliable to that extent. At the entreating of 明燮 I let him come back. Now he ran away with my money, thus making it appear that his former two attempts were □□ to induce me to trust him. That lazy good for nothing fellow has intelligence enough to plan deeply for cheating. His grandfather, father and uncle all untrustworthy rogues. 昌燮 has proved that heredity―especially in evil propensities―is a matter not to be over evoked. His brother clever, unscrupulous remarkably quick at eye service is as unreliable as his hopeful brother who is gone. But the elder man has sense enough to know that it pays better remain in my service than to run away.

27. 8월 27일

85
27th. Wednesday. Cloudy―pale sun p.m. Steamy.

86
Seoul home. A vigorous shower than drizzling rain from about 5 to 10 a.m.
87
Returned to Song Do 4:30 p.m. train.
88
The ingratitude and dishonesty of 昌燮 make me sick at heart, all the more so because I have none to trust. P.W.S. who has every reason to be grateful to me and my interest is becoming as untrustworthy and ungrateful as others. I wanted him to act as my general superviser. But he has done slyly so many mean things that he dare not say anything to other employees. Whom can I trust?
